Re: Feature request discussion - coverage of 450-500 kHz RECEIVE ONLY - e-mail to support@ was not positively received

Dave,

There was an earlier issue with the TX capability on all frequencies within the 60M band.? Although I am not a user of that band, I believe they were able to fix that in firmware update 1.04.07 back in January of this year.? Maybe others can confirm that 60M TX freq capability is now fixed.

If they were able to fix that via firmware, I would think what you are requesting is feasible, unless there is an internal hardware bandpass filter circuit that limits sensitivity significantly below 500 kHz.

I would like to use my TX500 as receiver for 630M band signals (around 470 kHz), however, the current band assignments (for receive) cut off at 500 kHz. This would of course require appropriate amount of gain in the receive path and such, but given that the radio does receive in US AM broadcast band, it seems possible to me from an RF (if not firmware) point of view.

I e-mailed support@... this question, and Ogdep replied:

"Hello Dave,

The band range is set according to the requirements for amateur radio equipment for the respective region (US / EU). Compliance with the region is set during production at the factory. Unfortunately, we cannot remotely change the transceiver region and band range accordingly.

I am not familiar with US regulations that would dictate RECEIVE capability (at least in the US I think portions of the old analog cell band are precluded, but I've heard of nothing else.) I'm not familiar with any such regulations in EU or elsewhere but I imagine they exist.

If the band limits are in firmware that can be updated, I should think that this request would be technically possible to accommodate at some level (if not precluded by policy decision). If the band limits are stored elsewhere, then this suggests that no future changes to band limits (to accommodate some future regulatory change, such as further revision to band limits), nor changing band limits for a radio that is individually shipped internationally (where other band limits would exist), could be accommodated. This seems like it would be a future concern.

At this point, I am just curious if there is more insight possible, and a follow-up question to Ogdep has not been answered, at least at this point.

Thanks very much for any thoughts,

Dave
