Soldani/Rabalais/English families in Avoyelles Parish
Hello! My name is Tina Gaspard. Most of my family was born and raised in or near Plaucheville, LA in Avoyelles Parish. We have one Italian ancestor who's early life/circumstances have always been a bit of a mystery. I am hoping someone on here may be able to help me find a few more pieces of the puzzle. My great, great grandfather - Achille Soldani - was orphaned in New Orleans and somehow wound up living with a family in Avoyelles Parish in the mid-late 1870s. Though census info is scant, I think that person may be Modelise Rabalais. Achille's name is spelled differently/misspelled on every document I can find, so tracing him along traditional routes (orphan trains rolls, adoption records and church records) has been fruitless. We know he was either born or baptized in New Orleans, that his parents were born in Italy and died within a year or two of each other. When his mother died, he and his sister were placed in separate orphanages in New Orleans. The next record is a misspelled entry under M. Rabalais for the 1880 census in Avoyelles Parish. The only other info besides his age (12) was that they was an orphan and went to school. Achille went on to marry Ella English (sister to Hayden English who married one of Modelise's daughters). The fact that they married into the same family seems to say that 1) I have the right person and 2) that perhaps Achille was treated like part of the family. We have no idea how he got there. Was he adopted? Sent to work on the farm? Just given a home by a benevolent family? I am hoping someone familiar with Rabalais and/or English family history might have a story about a random Italian boy from New Orleans and, perhaps, information on how he came to be there. Thank you!

Burial Location of Capt. Godfrey Dreher
I am a descendant of Capt. Godfrey Dreher, who was a Revolutionary War Patriot. He made his way From South Carolina to East Feliciana and EBR Parishes sometime in the early 1800s. On or about May 5, 1815, while on a trip to Algiers, La, he and his wife were apparently murdered. Findagrave indicates they were buried in Orleans Parish, but no source or cemetery are cited. I've searched cemetery, death, and other databases, but can't find any other information on their burial. Their bodies could have been brought back to EBR or East Feliciana, but I can't find any reference to their burial in those places. There is a Dreher Cemetary in the most northern part of EBR, and a Dreher-Kelly Cemetery in southern East Feliciana, where some of Godfrey's children and descendants are buried, but no markers for Godfrey nor his wife. Any help on locating their grave sites would be appreciated.

Helpful Links Page & Roll Call
Marsha, We started a LAFamilyHistory mailing list/query board a couple of months ago. It is still available. [email protected] If it was listed on LAGenWeb http://www.lagenweb.org/links.html we might get subscribers. I planned to post "What's New" updates for my Claiborne, East Feliciana, Jackson, Ouachita, St Mary, and St Tammany parishes, instead of having individual parish mailing lists/queries. Norma

Benjamin Franklin Luffman
Hello. I am trying to help a cousin find death information about his grandfather. Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Luffman, born 1878 in TN, is found living in Lapile, Union County, Arkansas, in the 1910 census with his wife and family. He is also found in the 1910 census ‘at work’ at Locks and Dams, Monroe, Quachita, Louisiana. His wife died shortly after giving birth to their fifth child in 1911. Frank died 9 March 1914, according to an entry in a family Bible. His children were raised by a sister in Dickson County, TN; no information came down from them about their father’s death. Someone remembered he may have worked on a riverboat Evie. I am trying to learn where and the details about Frank’s death. Frank’s grandson is 90 and I would surely like to find this for him!! Can you help steer me to resources where I might find this? Thank you for your consideration and for any assistance you are able to provide. Bonnie Luffman Fuller Meridian Idaho
