FRONT CRANK SHAFT OIL SEAL LEAK at race speeds
开云体育H I have a serious oil leak at the front oil seal at high engine revs. I have built this engine many times over the last 50 years without any issues but after this rebuild it is an issue this is the second time it has occurred engine removed new seal but still leaks any ideas. Have checked for crankcase pressure no restrictions ???Murray Charnley |
Hi Murray, Is the oil leaking from the seal (i.e. from the lip where it touches the crankshaft) or is it from the front timing cover where it connects with the sump? Where you say "?but after this rebuild it is an issue this is the second time it has occurred" do you mean that it occurred once, you replaced the seal, and it happened again - or that it has occurred twice, each time after a rebuild - sorry to be pedantic. Kind regards, Andy. On Tue, 4 Jul 2023 at 10:23, Murray Charnley <mnm_jaycogipsy@...> wrote:

开云体育Hi ANDREW I rebuilt the engine did a test run at the track no leak. RACE Qualifying ?oil from front of engine thru to back of the car withdrew from meeting. Engine out replaced seal with wider seal rim. Next meeting practice Friday no leak SATURDY Qualifying leak First race bad leak withdrew from meeting again ?(frustrating ) Murray ? 开云体育The time I had problems with oil everywhere?was from a lack of enough crankcase venting. I used the original mechanical fuel pump mount location ?as my crankcase vent , the larger diameter the better ( -10 ) Also the seal can wear a groove in the crank over time, a shim to move the seal slightly? one way or the other will put the seal lip in a different location on the crank. Good morning, I'm new to the group, but not new to Twincams and Ford Kent motors.? The advice about the seal grooving the crank is great.? It's also possible to install a "speedy-sleeve" by Chicago Rawhide over the nose of the crankshaft.? They are available at most any industrial bearing house.? That said, it's hard to find the exact source of the leak sometimes.? I was losing oil from the lower front cover area in my car and fed up with the mess.? I made up an adapter from my shop compressed air hose to the dry sump vent hose.? I regulated the pressure down to 1 PSIG and pressurized the engine through the vent hose.? I filled a spray bottle with water and some dish soap and sprayed the soapy water over and around the front of the engine.? In my case, the bubbles showed it was the centrifugal tach drive and one little pinhole at the mating joint of the pan where it meets the front cover. Best of luck to the OP.
