Polish Committee of the "Memorial" Society

Just a few words about the above:
I recently wrote to Alexander Gur'yanov asking for information in their
database "Polish citizens deported to Arkhangelsk region (1940-1941).
Aklexander wrote back within 2 days with exactly the information we
wanted. He was very helpful, written in good English, attached a letter
in Polish which he did offer to translate if neccessary, and gave
instructions on where to write to get copy of the documents we wanted.

It felt very strange seeing my mother's family names etc on a Russian
document and my mother was very moved by the reply. (She is trying to
get a copy of her sister's death certificate, she died at the age of 14
on Christmas Eve 1940 in Kotlas.)

Many thanks to Alexander, your assistance is much appreciated.

Hello Elizabeth
I am very new to this list (I joined
just a few days ago), but I must say that I think
such a list is an excellent initiative and very
appropriate.

I will be sending more of my details to the list
shortly, but I'd just like to ask a question on this
particular subject.

My mother too was deported to Arkhangelsk on 10 Feb 1940.
She is no longer with us, but her brother is still alive
and I am extremely interested in obtaining more details from
Alexander Gur'yanov.

Would it be OK for me to email him directly? If so
which language, English, Polish or Russian?
Or any of the three?

I'm thinking that we don't want to inundate him with
email requests!

Many thanks for any advice.

I am forwarding a message from Alexander Gur'yanov with a very generous
offer to assist anybody in the group seeking original file information on
their deported families from the former Soviet archives.

Alexander is on the "Polish Committee" of the Memorial Society in Moscow -
which is a group acting in the cause of the memory of the millions of people
repressed by the Soviet system.

I believe that the main file he has access to is from the Archangel
archives, but there may be other sources on other regions as well.

Subject: "Arkhangelsk" database

Moscow, 27.10.2001
Dear Stefan,
Unfortunately, some temporary problems appeared with including the
"Arkhangelsk" database to our website. The principal obstacle is that the
database contains a lot of errors and distorted informations (even surnames)
which may be rather difficult to recognize and to restore its proper values
by visitors of website.

It means that we need to continue our verification of the "Arkhangelsk"
database by comparing to a lot of different archive sources. Up to now the
main and almost only source is the card index in the archives of Arkhangelsk
Interior Affairs Office. Such a verification is a great piece of work. Now we
begin to cooperate with Center KARTA (Warsaw) in verification of the
"Arkhangelsk" database. Center KARTA will verify it with polish archives
sources. It will be possible to expose the database only after the
verification will be finished.

My promise to expose it soon appers to be premature, I am sorry very much!

In this situation I will seek for family records of the members of your
group by myself and answer the individual requests in the same way as I have
answered (in Polish) your own request or request of Mark Terech. It will be
better if any interested person will send the request directly to my E-mail
address gurpolcom@...

You may also direct your requests to Center KARTA in Warsaw:
indeks@...

I would like to remind, that if everybody from your group needs the official
archives certificate, we are ready to send the requests to the archives in
each region in former USRR. But the signed letter from the person interested
in the certificate is necessary for us to do it. Please, send these requests
(preferably in Polish) to our postal address:

Polish Committee of the "Memorial" Society,
Russia, 103051 Moscow, Malyi Karetnyi Pereulok 12.

We need the following data being contained in the request (of course, if
possible):
1. Surname, name, and father's name of repressed person, the year and place
of birth (in the case of deportation - for all the members of deported
family, with indication of the familiar relationship);
2. Place of living before arrest or depotation;
3. The time of arrest or deportation;
4. The kind of repression (arrest, sentence and imprisonment in penal labour
camps, or deportation without any sentence);
5. The most important for us: the regions of staying in camps or in exile in
the former USSR (especially the last place);
6. The time and place of discharge or the death;
7. The relationship of interested person to repressed person.

With the best regards - Alexander Gur'yanov
