[Kresy-Siberia (Yahoo)] Finding our loved family and friends

Great idea Julian. I was excited until one word came to mind - Russia.
Normally, I say soviets, but it is Russia now.
The International court told them to give up the information and like usual they thumb their nose at it.

Mark T. Canada

Subject: [Kresy-Siberia (Yahoo)] Finding our loved family and friends

?

There are approximately 20 million Polish people residing worldwide outside of Poland.
There are approximately 38 million Polish people residing in Poland.
?
There are thousands of Polish people trying to find their relatives and friends for the last 77 years that were scattered through the world because of WW2.
?
There has been little if any help from the Polish government, all Polish private and public agencies and all countries and data storage organization throughout the world in this effort.
?
As I mentioned before this would be a simple task to accomplish especially at this stage of technology.
?
The question is “why has the Polish community been silent on this matter” and not demanded action to help these suffering family members searching through scraps of information ?daily for family members?
?
I suggest that all of us contact all Polish Embassy through the world, all foreign government that we know gave refugee to the Polish refugees and all libraries of nations involved in the WW2 effort and request their entire database regarding the Polish refugees and current Polish population databases. ?
?
?Yes I also think that Stefan and his Kresy-Siberia Organization should take the lead to organize this effort.
?
?229?POLISH EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES
?
I am asking that all of us add to this list all libraries that we know have databases throughout the world that might have information that would be important to this effort.
I ask that we share OCR programs that transfer jpeg pages into a word documents and excel type that then can be sorted for easier searches. I ask that we transfer all PDF pages into regular word documents for the same reason.
I have English based OCR program but I do not have a Polish OCR program does anyone have one that can used for that purpose?
Can everyone list all important polish government officials in this document and their e-mail addresses so all of us can contact them to help in this effort or ask why they refuse to help in this effort.
Once we have standard word type pages each of us can have the pages translated in Google for free. That program does not give us a perfect translation but it is excellent tool to find our families and some basic history about them.
Our hearts bleed for information about our relative. Poland and all of us should do everything possible to help our people.
Julian Plowy
?

Below is a partial list of media outlets worldwide that we should contact
through in Polish, English or local langues of a country and have them
search their files for any information they have regarding Polish Refugees.
We should create a basic form that anyone can use to send or contact these
media outlets. We should send all information to a central clearing source
for assembly. The same should be true to all governments we request
information. We should have official letter stationary to add credence to
our requests. It would be great if the stationary had Polish Official or
Kresy-Siberia official signatures. If we do nothing we will receive
nothing. There is no reason to wait or accept walls to stop our requests.
These are simple requests that have nothing to do with politics.

*Subject:* [Kresy-Siberia (Yahoo)] Finding our loved family and friends

There are approximately 20 million Polish people residing worldwide
outside of Poland.
There are approximately 38 million Polish people residing in Poland.

There are thousands of Polish people trying to find their relatives and
friends for the last 77 years that were scattered through the world because
of WW2.

There has been little if any help from the Polish government, all Polish
private and public agencies and all countries and data storage organization
throughout the world in this effort.

As I mentioned before this would be a simple task to accomplish especially
at this stage of technology.

The question is “why has the Polish community been silent on this matter”
and not demanded action to help these suffering family members searching
through scraps of information daily for family members?

I suggest that all of us contact all Polish Embassy through the world, all
foreign government that we know gave refugee to the Polish refugees and all
libraries of nations involved in the WW2 effort and request their entire
database regarding the Polish refugees and current Polish population
databases.

Yes I also think that Stefan and his Kresy-Siberia Organization should
take the lead to organize this effort.

229 POLISH EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES

I am asking that all of us add to this list all libraries that we know
have databases throughout the world that might have information that would
be important to this effort.
I ask that we share OCR programs that transfer jpeg pages into a word
documents and excel type that then can be sorted for easier searches. I ask
that we transfer all PDF pages into regular word documents for the same
reason.
I have English based OCR program but I do not have a Polish OCR program
does anyone have one that can used for that purpose?
Can everyone list all important polish government officials in this
document and their e-mail addresses so all of us can contact them to help
in this effort or ask why they refuse to help in this effort.
Once we have standard word type pages each of us can have the pages
translated in Google for free. That program does not give us a perfect
translation but it is excellent tool to find our families and some basic
history about them.
Our hearts bleed for information about our relative. Poland and all of us
should do everything possible to help our people.

As I mentioned before this would be a simple task to accomplish
especially at this stage of technology.

The question is “why has the Polish community been silent on this matter”
and not demanded action to help these suffering family members searching
through scraps of information daily for family members?

I suggest that all of us contact all Polish Embassy through the world,
all foreign government that we know gave refugee to the Polish refugees and
all libraries of nations involved in the WW2 effort and request their
entire database regarding the Polish refugees and current Polish population

Julian Plowy

As I mentioned before this would be a simple task to accomplish
especially at this stage of technology.

The question is “why has the Polish community been silent on this
matter” and not demanded action to help these suffering family members
searching through scraps of information daily for family members?

I suggest that all of us contact all Polish Embassy through the world,
all foreign government that we know gave refugee to the Polish refugees and
all libraries of nations involved in the WW2 effort and request their
entire database regarding the Polish refugees and current Polish population

Poland and all of
us should do everything possible to help our people.

aThis is my voice in general discussion on the subject of making archives public.

I agree that " If we do nothing we will receive nothing" as you said. But first we have to do our own job. You mention many media outlets in Poland as "National". In reality many of them are owned by foreign capital, mostly german. For instance Onet, Newsweek Polska. Here is the full list owned by german capital (70% of all media) .

There is no point to send our request to any media, unless we want publicity, to make people aware of our needs. Very few, if any will publish our request. It cost money. Who will pay for it?
On the other hand, what kind of information or databases they can have? Most of them in Poland were created in 1980-ies and later. We can write to public officials as they are obliged to attend to the needs of their citizens. Here are also a few obstacles. It needs time, money and are influenced by political concerns. Most of the interesting us archives are in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus.

There is also a proverb "If you want something to get done, do it yourself". Jews understand this very well. Look into . There are a lot of digitized archives in Poland done due to their effort and money. They create special interest groups, get donations, dues, volunteeres for translation of documents. Those groups concentrate on one particular place and one archive. Digitize and publish archive documents, create database and take money for searching, which is used to do more digitizing. In my opinion we should follow this example.

Lets create a group of volunteers, a committee, which will plan, organize and coordinate our efforts. They should prepare a plan. One of the first tasks should be identifying names and location of the archives which hold interesting us documents. I do not know if there is not something like that already. Then we should start from the most important and work on them one by one. We can start from the easiest, which are in western countries. Mostly military archives and polish government and organizations in London, USA, Canada.
There are also genealogical sites which have huge databases, but mostly for western Europe, US and Canada. For instance . For $20 you can search their world database for a month.

I agree that " If we do nothing we will receive nothing" as you said. But first we have to do our own job.

ANS: I agree

?

You mention many media outlets in Poland as "National". In reality many of them are owned by foreign capital, mostly german. For instance Onet, Newsweek Polska. Here is the full list owned by german capital (70% of all media).

?

There is no point to send our request to any media, unless we want publicity, to make people aware of our needs. Very few, if any will publish our request.

ANS: It cost nothing to present “new” that is what news media does. We have to frame the issue properly and they will follow our lead.

ANS: It cost money. Who will pay for it? Frame the issue properly as “news” “pull on the heartstrings and the right thing to do” it then will not cost us anything.

?

On the other hand, what kind of information or databases they can have? Most of them in Poland were created in 1980-ies and later.

ANS: This issue is to all media worldwide and also in Poland. The key is to use the media to mobilize all Polish people to action and support. Not only in true database written information but recollections of stories about their lost love ones. ?

?

We can write to public officials as they are obliged to attend to the needs of their citizens. Here are also a few obstacles. It needs time, money and are influenced by political concerns. Most of the interesting us archives are in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus.

ANS: We need to make sure we are not trying to use the information to condemn or open old wounds. We just are trying to connect families and bring closure to all and closure to old wounds. We need to have people who are willing to translate documents from all languages we receive and translate them into Polish and English.

?

There is also a proverb "If you want something to get done, do it yourself". Jews understand this very well. Look into?. There are a lot of digitized archives in Poland done due to their effort and money. They create special interest groups, get donations, dues, volunteers for translation of documents. Those groups concentrate on one particular place and one archive. Digitize and publish archive documents, create database and take money for searching, which is used to do more digitizing. In my opinion we should follow this example.

ANS: Yes we can try to follow that example but we should not wait until we build an organization and funds just start with what we have. If we wait to get funds we will never accomplish anything because we will always be trying to get funds more that doing basic research.

?

Lets create a group of volunteers, a committee, which will plan, organize and coordinate our efforts. They should prepare a plan. One of the first tasks should be identifying names and location of the archives which hold interesting us documents. I do not know if there is not something like that already.

ANS: If we start and get some results an organization will build itself as time goes on. Kresy started with an idea and a few individuals. It has built itself to its present structure. Most businesses start with an idea and then build a structure around that idea and the small successes it gets along the way.

?

Then we should start from the most important and work on them one by one. We can start from the easiest, which are in western countries. Mostly military archives and polish government and organizations in London, USA, Canada.

ANS: I agree but we must also contact all Polish media in these countries with “news releases” this will open the door to more information.

?

There are also genealogical sites which have huge databases, but mostly for Western Europe, US and Canada. For instance?. For $20 you can search their world database for a month.

ANS: This information should be shared with our people and we should ask them for their results so we can publish them. Each person can afford the $20 on an individual bases.

Thank you for your answer Julian.

On my part it was just food for thoughts. We will have different opinions in many matters. Just one explanation.?

ANS: We need to make sure we are not trying to use the information to condemn or open old wounds.?

We have the full right to query anybody for information about our families, and to know what has happened to them regardless of the feelings or interests of others.?I had something different in mind.?The classical example of ?not only the lack of political will but even directed actions to block information about what have happened to the victims is investigation and media information about Polish airplane catastrophy in Smoleńsk in 2010. Even today we do not know for sure who is burried where. Another example is massacre wolynska, where polish authorities avoided the subject for years (2000-2008). Russian genocide in 1937-38, where 110 000 Poles where murdered and scores imprisoned, stripped of posessions, persecuted for the rest of their lives came up to the public attention in recent years. Yet, many of them years later got some information about their family members from the authorities. Mostly false, without indication where they were burried.

There are still remnants of Polish organizations in Russia, where we can find some help. I know one lady in Orenburg (Kazakhstan). She told me that there is some ?interest ?growing?in preserving the history of the region. Some Poles visited the places and met people, who remembered them from 1940-ties. There was a meeting organized with ?local people and authorities. Here is the story

Although some of my family members were deported to Kazakhstan (1940-1946), they all came back to homeland in Vilnius region, then relocated to Poland.

I have deep rooted feelings about the many atrocities committed by USSR/Russia, Germany and the actions of Great Britain and America. But I would put them aside for a while to obtain information to help our people have closures and to reunite with their families even though I personally know where all my family resides and how my path in life was constructed.

I lost family members, they and I suffered a great deal. But at this stage I feel it is important to help those who are still suffering not knowing if any family survived or why they are journeying this path in their life.

Working from that point of view we might be able to help many more then trying to open wounds as the primary goal.

At the sometime I respect others points of view and will work with all to help.

Ships and?Passenger Lists of Polish WW2 DPs arriving from Africa and Europe

?
The majority of displaced Polish nationals arrived in? the UK by sea in ships listed below and in most cases their names can be found on each ship's passenger list. There are at least 3 sailings where the ship's manifest states the number of aliens that sailed but the actual passenger list is missing, . There were also at least 15 overland transports by rail from Italy? which carried over 4000, mainly women and children, from camps in Trani and Barlette. So far no passenger list for those evacuees has been found.? Most of the medical staff and equipment from Polish field hospitals in those areas also made their way to the UK either by train or ship. I have been unable to find lists of Polish troops arriving in? the UK.? Civilian records to which I have access simply state that a contingent of so many troops sailed but there are no nominal lists, presumably, these will be held by the Ministry of Defence and I have yet to find them.

The one I am interested in is the Duchess of Bedford and as you say no lists. Would be great to confirm it was the ship in which my Father arrived in England.
