Re: [Kresy-Siberia (Yahoo)] Re: PAIFORCE 551

Amos,
Did you try the Ministry of Defence in the UK? He was in the British 8th army and they keep separate records of the Polish section and has good information on inidividuals. I know my dds records show some time in Palestine which I know little about except it seems to have been some training there. The address is listed in the resource section of this KS site.?

Thank you, Robert, for this valuable information. My cousin, Leon HELLER, was in Tel Aviv on the date I indicated. Would he have been on some sort of leave at that time?

Re: PAIFORCE 551

Hi Amos

Likely a Polish army postal address using the number 551 as a cryptonym.
In June 1943, the number was used by HQ Battalion Polish Army in the East then at Qizil-Ribat.

If a list exists of this battalion it would be at the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London.

PAIFORCE 551

Dear fellow researchers,

I recently came upon a cousin, Leon HELLER, who was in the Polish Forces, with PAIFORCE 551. The date of this document is 8 June 1943.

I understand that PAIFORCE was the Persia and Iraq Force. I imagine that Polish forces were attached to it.

Can anyone explain what PAIFORCE 551 was? Is there a list of soldiers belonging to it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Have you tried writing to the Ship's owner at that time: Or to the owner of that link: or to the Ministry of Defense?

Did you father stay in England? Found link DUCHESS OF BEDFORD leaving England for Canada and America.

Perhaps there is no list of arrivals, in England from Italy, because they were Military Personnel and classified and the list could be held in Military Document Center.

Ships and?Passenger Lists of Polish WW2 DPs arriving from Africa and Europe

?
The majority of displaced Polish nationals arrived in? the UK by sea in ships listed below and in most cases their names can be found on each ship's passenger list. There are at least 3 sailings where the ship's manifest states the number of aliens that sailed but the actual passenger list is missing, . There were also at least 15 overland transports by rail from Italy? which carried over 4000, mainly women and children, from camps in Trani and Barlette. So far no passenger list for those evacuees has been found.? Most of the medical staff and equipment from Polish field hospitals in those areas also made their way to the UK either by train or ship. I have been unable to find lists of Polish troops arriving in? the UK.? Civilian records to which I have access simply state that a contingent of so many troops sailed but there are no nominal lists, presumably, these will be held by the Ministry of Defence and I have yet to find them.

Working from that point of view we might be able to help many more then trying to open wounds as the primary goal.

We have the full right to query anybody for information about our families, and to know what has happened to them regardless of the feelings or interests of others.?I had something different in mind.?The classical example of ?not only the lack of political will but even directed actions to block information about what have happened to the victims is investigation and media information about Polish airplane catastrophy in Smoleńsk in 2010. Even today we do not know for sure who is burried where. Another example is massacre wolynska, where polish authorities avoided the subject for years (2000-2008). Russian genocide in 1937-38, where 110 000 Poles where murdered and scores imprisoned, stripped of posessions, persecuted for the rest of their lives came up to the public attention in recent years. Yet, many of them years later got some information about their family members from the authorities. Mostly false, without indication where they were burried.

There are still remnants of Polish organizations in Russia, where we can find some help. I know one lady in Orenburg (Kazakhstan). She told me that there is some ?interest ?growing?in preserving the history of the region. Some Poles visited the places and met people, who remembered them from 1940-ties. There was a meeting organized with ?local people and authorities. Here is the story

Although some of my family members were deported to Kazakhstan (1940-1946), they all came back to homeland in Vilnius region, then relocated to Poland.
