Welcome Krystyna Szypowska

Stefan Wisniowski

Please welcome Krystyna Szypowska to the group.

Krystyna, I was born in Montreal too, but beat a retreat from winters to
sunny Australia!

I hope you find the group as valuable as nearly 400 others so far... and
growing every week! Please tell us more about your mother's home in Poland.

Regards
Stefan Wisniowski

Hello,

I certainly do not mind sharing the reason for my interest in your group :
My mother's family (surname: Siomkajlo) were taken from their home during
the night of Feb.10th, 1940 and they ended up in Kazakhstan where her
mother, father and sister died. A brother and sister-in-law and their
daughter later died in Teheran, Persia. The surviving 4 sisters (who had
slaved in the gold mines in Kazakhstan) found their way to a camp in east
Africa, and eventually ended up in England.

I live in Montreal (Canada) - I was born here, a few short months after my
parents arrived here from England.

I am trying to learn as much as I can about the part of Poland (now Ukraine)
where my mother's family came from, and about their forced exile in the
USSR, and would appreciate becoming a member of your group.

Thank you,
Krystyna Szypowska
Montreal, Canada

Subject: a little about myself

Hello, my name is Rafal Czapla and I currently live in the United States,
near Chicago. I was born in Poland in 1980 and lived there for 10 years
before my family emigrated to the US. I have had an interest in WWII and
especially Poland's role in WWII since i was a baby, both my grandfathers
fought, one was a member of AK in Debica, between Tarnow and Rzeszow, the
other was in the Polish Air Force, also based out of Debica. My childhood
was filled with their stories about the occupation. Three of my uncles, on
my mothers side, fought at Monte Cassino, only one ended up coming back
home.
I want to join your discussion group because I am currently pursuing a
Masters Degree in History, with an emphasis on World War Two, and I am
attempting to write my thesis on Gen. Anders and his Army. I am basically
looking for places i could write or e-mail, or even go, where i could
examiine documents (original, or copied, no matter to me) relating to the
deportations, inprisonment, release, training, military action, and finally
the re-settlement of the soldiers under Anders' command. I would also be
curious to see if any of your members had access to any of this information,
and could possibly supply it to me, for a fee of course. Thank You for your
consideration and i look forward to hearing from you soon.
Rafal

Dear Listers,

An update on the activities in Toronto. I have been in preliminary
meetings with the SPK (the main veterans' association) and the KPK
(Canadian Polish Congress).

We had originally been planning a big do for the 60th anniversary of
the Battle for Monte Cassino. However, since our main goal is the
education of the second and third generations and the English
speaking world (to start), we figured that we should expand the
educational component to include all aspects of the Polish WW2
experience with a short introduction on Polish history of the last
few centuries as a backgrounder. Might as well do it all at once in
order to present a complete picture and save a lot of time and
effort.

I should know more in the next month or two.

I have recently joined this wonderful group and would very much
appreciate some help in my search for information on my family who in
1939 were deported from Cholowczyce, Poland (now Belorus)to Siberia
(I don't know where)

In 1942 they were evacuated from USSR to Tehran. I found the
following names on the list of evacuees on this group website:

1906. Slawek, Eugeniusz. 21.11.33. Holawczyce, Teheran (my uncle)
1907. Slawek, Maria. 15.8.07. Gombin w Warszawa, Teheran (my
grandmother)
1908. Slawek, Marian. pazdz 1928. Holawczyce, Teheran (my father)
1911. Slawek, Zygmunt. 27.10.36. Holawczyce, Tehran(my uncle)

QUESTIONS:
WHERE CAN I FIND INFORMATION/RECORDS ABOUT WHY THEY WERE DEPORTED AND
WHERE THEY WERE DEPORTED TO?

Who I did not find was:
Slawek, Feliks (my grandfather)who I beleive joined Anders'army
Slawek, Irena (my aunt)who died of typhoid en route to Iran and was
buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in Afghanistan

QUESTIONS:
WHERE CAN I FIND INFORMATION/RECORDS ABOUT SOLIDERS IN ANDERS' ARMY?
WHERE CAN I FIND INFORMATION/RECORDS ABOUT REFUGEES WHO DIED EN ROUTE?

My father, Marian, joined the Unaki in Palestine and eventually made
it to England aboard a troopship. He joined some type of Polish Navy
Cadet training program in the Midlands UK

QUESTIONS:
WHERE CAN I FIND INFORMATION/RECORDS ABOUT UNAKI IN PALESTINE?

My grandmother and my two uncles were in refugee camps somewhere in
Africa.

Re: Volhynia-Eastern Galicia 1943-1944. A Guide to the Polish and Ukrainian Archival

Gabriel,
Thank you for sharing this information.
There is so much information all over the world but all in different places.
To bad that a central point can't be established that all the information is
brought together, translated into two or three or four main languages and be
made available to all free of charge on the internet.
Projects like this I would be willing to financially support to the best of
my ability. I would also support it with my time and research.
We are doing a great job at this site giving a voice to most of us and
assembling and directing information. At some point I hope that we can get a
grant to extend our services and compile and organize all of the resources
that we have come across.
Thank you again for sharing and translating this information. I hope that
you will continue to translate additional information as you have time.
Julek

Subject: [Kresy-Siberia] Volhynia-Eastern Galicia 1943-1944. A Guide to
the Polish and Ukrainian Archival

Hi group!
I found an interesting information on www.karta.org.pl about
archival Volhynia and Eastern Galicia sources. Here is my translation
from Polish:

With effort of The Head Office of State Archive in Warsaw and State
Archives Committee Of Ukraine in Lviv came out first part of guide-
book to the Polish and Ukrainian archival sources titled: Volhynia-
Eastern Galicia 1943-1944. A Guide to the Polish and Ukrainian
Archival Sources, vol. 1.
Publisher's purpose was to possibly full presentation of archival
sources, kept in collections of Polish and Ukrainian archives, which
may make the grandwork for objective describing of events on Volhynia
and Eastern Galicia during 1943-1944 period. During researches on
Polish collections, not only state archives, but also several church
archives, libraries, archives of associations and social
institiutions were taken into consideration. Ukrainian site has made
similiar researches at its state archives including central archive
in Kyiv and Lviv and regional archives.
Main part of sources included in guide are materials preserved in
Eastern Archive of KARTA Center.
In this guide there are descriptions of 155 archival collections
preserved mainly in Polish and Ukrainian state archives. Essential
guide's supplement are descriptions of almoust 250 items of
recollections and relations, took from eyewitnesses and participants
of events on Volhynia in 1943-1944, which are preserved in Eastern
Archive of KARTA Center. In KARTA Eastern Archive , there is so
called Bukat's Collection, in which there are documents of Armia
Krajowa (AK) intelligence from Eastern Malopolska teritory, with
descriptions and analysis of Polish-Ukrainian conflicts in 1943-1944.
This is extremely valuable and unique collection of sources.
Description of Bukat's Collection like descriptions of other archival
collections are based on international standard of archival
description ISAD. Descriptions of source memories and relations on
equlized form, containing basic information about the unit: author
data, date and place of issue, form and number of pages of relation,
informationa about attached documents, photos, maps and so on,
signatures and brief summary of plots relating to Polish-Ukrainian
conflict on Volhynia and Eastern Galicia in 1943-1944, existing in
relation or recollection.

Celebrations in May 2004
