Constant carrier for tuning
I use kcat, the Kachina control software from w1hkj. Works great. I don't think the issue I describe here is a kcat problem. To run the outboard auto tuner I use, I need a few seconds of constant carrier. If I click the CARR button in kcat while in any mode other than CW, it does what I want it to do - sends an unmodulated carrier. But if in CW mode no output is produced. The TX light flashes very briefly, I hear a relay click, and then I'm back in receive mode. I don't see even a flicker on the external power meter. This button on kcat sends two commands to the radio: the "Constant Tune Carrier on" command, followed by the Push to talk on" command. I've fiddled with the code a little to see if a different sequence might work, but have found nothing simple yet. My workaround has been to switch to AM and click PTT for tuning, then switch back to CW. Simple enough I guess. So I'm curious if it is an issue in the radio. A test would be if anyone out there is using their Kachina and can tell me that the constant carrier function works in CW mode with the original (or any) driver. Thanks for any suggestions.

DIY Control Head for Kachina 505DSP
3
Curious if anyone has built a control head or otherwise used the 505DSP without a factory built control head? I have one complete radio which I purchased new way back when, still working fine. But I am about to acquire one from an estate, control head has been lost. At least it will give me some spare parts, but I'm thinking I'll build a control head for it and have a second complete setup. Would be interested in anyone's experience doing this. Thanks - Bill N7DZ

kcat frequency bug found and fixed
6
I use a Kachina 505DSP with kcat from W1HKJ running on Linux Mint as my primary station radio. I've made one minor fix to it that made the scanner more useful. But I was having a lot of trouble doing frequency calibration and for a while thought it was an issue with the radio. The symptom was I could not precisely tune to 15 MHz to calibrate again WWV on that freq. I would tune towards 15 from below, with DDS numbers set to zero, and just as I clicked up to exactly 15 the frequency would jump to who-knows-where. The number displayed was 15000.000 but WWV was gone. Long story shortened a little, it was a bug in copying the frequency into the byte array that gets sent to the radio. If there was a zero byte anywhere in the hex of the DDS corrected frequency, nothing after the zero got sent. The zeros in the lowest byte don't matter - there's nothing after it to send. Zeros in the second from lowest byte matter more - causes the lowest byte to be ignored, resulting in a "hole" in the tuning about 114 Hz wide about every 29 kHz. These may go unnoticed since they are spread out in the band and only 114 Hz wide. Just a tiny tuning glitch you might think. Zeros in the third byte from lowest are a bigger deal, but they only occur every 7.5 MHz. And none are in the ham bands. So they might never get noticed - except there's that one at WWV 15 MHz.... There are more details, but boring. I'm happy to share the fixed source with anyone that wants it. Even happier if I could get the code owner to absorb it into the master copy. It's a good Kachina front end - and now just a little bit better. 73 - Bill N7DZ

I have a kachina 505dsp i am fixing up.it all works but it has some tx audio issues.the TX audio makes a sound like a robot, but you can be understood .i have troubleshooted it a little .i disconnected the microphone audio input to the dsp chip and you could still get the sound.the only software i currently can get to work is KCAT 1.2.4 .original software will not work on my setup, could it be in the firmware ,or may a software issue .i do be leave its in the dsp and not FR or in the microphone circuit.this is a ham fest pickup i have no past history..Any thoughts

Looking for control-head and cables
3
Hi all, Recently came across one of these on FB marketplace and picked it up cheap. Unfortunately no cabling or control head with it. Looking through the manual and schematics, it's definitely something I could re-create if needed but thought it's worth asking first to see if anyone has extra stuff laying around they might like to part with. Thanks! Elijah AD7ZJ

Kachina KC-103
Hello, I know this group is focused on the 505DSP (which is my current daily driver) but I recently aquired a commercial offering from Kachina from the same era called the "Kachina Model KC 103". It's mentioned on their website (using the wayback machine from the late 90s) and features are listed as well as a photo but I can't find a manual or anything else for this radio. I was hoping perhaps someone here would have this information or any documentation. Thanks!

Kachina "maintenance".
4
Hello Richard, et al, Larry here, K7LRB. I have owned, and still own, several Kachinas. Currently have 5 of them, two of which work and 3 which don't. There is a ham in Canada, VE3PCN, John, who used to work on them and recently I have discussed sending him some of mine to have a look at. I believe he will still work on them and, at this point, he is the ONLY one I am aware of that still works on them. He and I have been trying to "get together" to have him look at a few of mine. There IS some "logistic" issues getting them to him up in Canada. Please let me know if there is any way I can help. Best 73 for now, Larry K7LRB - All info good on QRZ, et al. Kachina 505 and tuning knob issue
posting this for Steve KI7WQH; I have a working 505 that I'm using and also the tuning knob. The trouble I'm having is I think the tuning knob either requires a driver or some kind of software to properly work. It seems that the hardware inside is basically a Microsoft serial mouse. The trouble is that when it is attached, Windows (XP, the software doesn't work on later versions) seems to want to use it as a serial mouse. The Kachina software has the correct com port selected but turning the knob never tunes the radio but instead simply moves the mouse diagonally from the bottom left to the upper right and vice versa when turning it back and forth. This makes sense of course because the guts are the same as a microsoft serial mouse, but there's obviously a way this was supposed to work. I can't seem to find any information on how to get this to work or if it needs a driver that tells windows that this is not a mouse and allows the kachina software to see it. Any help will be appreciated. Posted by Jeff WA1WXL

Anyone have a Tuning Knob to do some experimentation to reverse engineer it, both mechanically and software? Does this only work with the original Kachina factory control software? John VE3PCN London ON CANADA
