Wo-We replacement

All,

It seems the original wo-we from Jason's videos that was 12v is no longer available and the current model requires 19v and only has a 2 star rating on Amazon.? Has anyone found a decent one of these mini computers that runs on 12v?? I've seen a Beelink that seems to run on 12v and might be a decent windows ham box (n100 chip).? Has anyone tested any of these other systems?? I'm deciding between one of these 12v systems and a small form factor PC with more USB ports.

Thanks,
Ryan KI6BTY

I use a MeLE Quieter3 (one with 8 GB RAM and one with 16 GB RAM0 for both astrophotography and as a ham station computer running Win11 on both. I have installed an astrophotography package called Stellarmate on the astrophotography PC. It's based on Debian and runs fine. I'm just more familiar with the Windows software called N.I.N.A.

On the one I use for ham radio (the 16 GB version), I am using the included 256 GB SSD. If I have one complaint, that computer is marketed as having 512 GB storage. It does... Technically but it's not how I have ever thought of storage - it's two 256 GB storage devices - the 256 GB eMMC where the OS comes pre-installed and a 256 GB SSD that is empty - not a single 512 GB SSD. It's probably in the fine print but I didn't read it that way.

I don't know that I could recommend it for an FTx contest but it seems to hold its own. I do recommend a heatsink to put on top of the PC though - it can run hot. Otherwise, it's not a bad little computer.

This is the one I use for AP:?

They come preloaded with Win11Pro but it doesn't keep you from installing your preferred Linux distro. I use RDP from my Mac to control both of them. The one I use for AP is actually setup for an ad hoc network but that ad hoc network only works after you've logged into it so, if you lose power and have no way to connect, you're SOL. It's never been an issue with me - I run a temp CAT6 cable out to the scope - so I've not really needed to troubleshoot it and I have other priorities.

Isn't this one basically the same as the WeWo? (Shown as needing 12v.)

Have you Guys considered looking at the New Pi5? There’s a few good videos of it so far on YouTube with some pretty impressive performance tests this far.

It will be released sometime in November to all of the major dealers with prices being $60 for the 4gb model and $80 for the 8gb model.

It does require the new 5amp power supply and they suggest using the Pi made cooler assembly ($5) and they also offer a really nice case for it.

Y’all check it out, it seems to be getting great reviews with the pre-release models and so far, the Guys on YouTube love them with speeds 2 to 3 times faster than the Pi4. Let me know what y’all think??

Take care fellas and 73,

Joel,

They look interesting, it appears there is a $40 coupon on the 16G/512G model, bringing the price close to just over $200.

Note: maybe it's because I was looking for it, but the two SSD devices issue is listed several times on the product page - I've missed details like that myself when I get excited about a product... it happens.

But a question about powering your computers 'in the field' - the power plug us a USB-C connector, but the seller makes a big deal out of not using a PD power supply or a battery pack (cell recharger pack, I assume). They note it accepts 12-23v, so that's nice, but how are you powering the computers??

Thanks,

Ken, N2VIP

This is not good.? Ryan, where did you hear that about the 19 volt.? I just ordered everything on the list in Jason's video.? It said they were working on resupplying the wowe that was listed and would send an email when it was available to ship.? They didn't indicate that it was discontinued.

For my AP setup, I have a MeanWell 12 V, 15 A PS that powers everything except my mount. I’ll have to find the p/n for that. It's the . It is flat out 12 VDC (I think I measured 12.07 VDC) but it works fine for me. I cut off the end of the connector and doubled up the two (+) and two (-) to 30 A PP connectors and that feeds my DC distribution block.

I will have to find them on Amazon but I ordered some two-wire ?for the miniPC. I put PowerPoles on one end and run it to a DC distribution block with fuses.

For the one that runs my radio equipment, I just use the wall wart that came with it. It’s a 12 V, 2 (or 3?) A PS.

I think the concern is the USB buss in the miniPC cannot run many devices. In other words, you’re probably not going to power an external SSD and a GPS without some sort of powered hub (I had actually forgotten that until you mentioned it). I have, however, powered a uBlox GPS dongle with the AP one (although I don’t currently use the GPS). I could not power the GPS dongle and one of my cameras though. I bought a powered hub to do that.

Thank you everyone!
@W4JBB - I haven't seen that computer before, looks like it might fit the bill.? Thank you.? The two HDDs is annoying, but for a basic windows install, N1MM and some FT8/RTTY/etc. programs one drive may do it.? Most of my radio files are stored elsewhere, so that shouldn't be a problem.

@Jerry - That is similar to the current WoWe, but with linux.? I like Linux, but I'm trying to stick with windows as that's what our emergency ops centers use and I want to try and keep things as close to those as possible so I can keep my skills up between our monthly tests.

@Danny - I'm a huge fan of the Pi and use a Pi4 in the field with my 891 and another on my network as a PiHole ad blocker.? I'll probably order two of these when they launch and likely upgrade my field system to this and use one for my SDR needs.? For my normal operations, I've been using the Pi4 in the shack as well powered by a wall wart, but my ability to run programs like Vara cleanly makes it not very useful for everything I need to do.? Now if they can get the Pi5 to run a basic version of Windows 10...

@Ken - I realize this is directed at W4JBB.? My desire is to be able to run the system directly off of a powerpole distribution block and have the computer and radios tied into a 20ah battery and grid power via a West Mountain Radio Epic PwrGate.? This would be a shack-only setup.? For field use, I'd stick with my Pi4 powered by a home brew battery box.

@Jim, it was listed on the product page under "Power (AC Adapter)".? If my screenshot paste works, I have it highlighted below.? This is for the one with the fancy design that runs the Ryzen 7 3750 chip, as (hopefully) shown below.? The original square one that comes with Windows shows as unavailable with no information about amazon being resupplied with them.

Ah, ok.? I ordered the A9 version that comes with Ubuntu.? Got an email this morning saying expected ship date is Nov 4.? So, it appears they haven’t discontinued it.

?

Thanks

Jim

Follow up on the Radio setup..........

You just stuck the heat sink on the bottom?? What did you use to put it there?

I have a Wo-We that I bought earlier. I just checked the power plug for it and it indeed says output 19V. However I have been operating the WO-WE off my DC power supply since I received it with no problems. I run most everything in my shack from the DC power supply. I've also tested it off a Powerwerx 30ah LiFePo battery. No problems. The cable runs from the DC plug to the Anderson Power Pole connector on the DC distro panel. You should be fine.?
