Raspberry Pi WinLink Gateway

My closest gateway for WinLink is 17 miles away. ?If that goes down, the next is over-the-horizon. ?In all of Jacksonville, the largest city in the US by size, there are exactly three gateways. ?

We need more.

I've been emailing Mark at PiGate to see what the best way is to proceed using his product, and I keep getting confused between the email server piece and the actual gateway. ?He's being extremely helpful, andI look forward to continuing down a path with him.

Has anyone had experience building a gateway with a Pi? ?My setup I currently have available for a build:
Computer: Raspberry Pi (both 3 and 4)
Radio: FTM-100, FT-857 (will be buying a FT-2980 this week for the increased power-out)
TNC: MFJ-1270X "TNC-X"

My goal is simply to provide another gateway for people to use in my community.

Very respectfully, 73,

Grant / K4GDG

I have built Mark's PiGate RMS Gateway and it works. I used an FT-7900.? The setup is currently offline because the state has used the ARES group to rebuild the network and we have a bunch of stations in my
area.

I do get it once every six months and test it.

Thanks Ed. ?Mark just wrote and also recommended the 7900. ?Mind if I start up a conversation with you offline about what the capabilities are and what your setup is?

Grant, can you send me info once you¡¯ve done all the work? ?

Actually, I have a TNC-X, 2m Mobile, Ft-100D and a PiHat, and want to build a portable gateway that works 2m packet/NVIS HF local and connects via HF for delivery. I¡¯m very interested in how you set your gateway up!

I have built one using Mark's PiGate RMS software with a Raspberry Pi 3, a TNC-Pi, and a Yaesu FT-8900.? I had gotten the TNC-Pi when they were available for an APRS demo using an Official Raspberry Pi 7" display.? I assembled it all in a frame I made from wood and it fits in a plastic ammo can for portability and protection.? I have ordered a TNC-Pi9k6 from?to be backup.? I plan to reassemble the PiGate RMS using the Adafruit display that Mark recommends so I will have a smaller unit in a 3D printed case.? I use a 12v to 5v USB power converter that I got from Amazon intended for a motorcycle.? Then I will use the frame and display again for APRS using YAAC.

EDIT: I run the PiGate RMS as an RMS Gateway on 144.910 as a full time RMS Packet Gateway using a J-Pole antenna mounted on my roof.? It was easy to register as a gateway and fun to be able to provide this.? I use the FT-8900 for Public Service and that is on hold now.

That's a great looking setup Bill!

Ed and Mark have both pushed me in the right direction - going to ask Mark to build me one of his setups (Pi+TNC+screen), and I'll pair with a 7900 as well.? Will get photos put out as soon as it comes up.

Very respectfully,

Grant

Thanks so much, Lynn? KB3FN
