Setting up duplex audio is the big stumbling block without using skype or some other 2nd party software. Mumble does not work well either. RigPi is a convoluted mess with it's audio. HTML 5 can do it but software very complex. Whoever solves IP duplex audio with open source software will be a real hero.

Mumble seems to suffer with noise. On a good strong signal, it¡¯s acceptable. But add typical HF noise and lots of unpleasant artifacts appear.?

I used Skype for a number of years and likely still would. That is the quality level to strive for.?

Jason,
Would you also consider adding D-RATS to the mix of software?
Not sure if there is a better place to post this requests, but following Don example.
Thanks

I'll look into it but I know very little about D-RATS and don't own a DSTAR radio. This makes is impossible for me to test.

Jason,
D-RATS is basically an internet messenger. Required an internet connection the way I am using it. If I test it thru a radio I'll pass along additional instructions. All you would have to do is install it.

D-RATS can be found in most Linux Ubuntu ( type ) based OS repositories?(APPs ) libraries =)

Edited

D-rats can be used with an analog radio also, for packet only. And It is currently being used also on a Pi.See
If your not interested in watching the full hour video, highlights at 7:20 and 14:30

Yes, a very brief mentioning of D-Rats use on analog radio. Twice.

Given our radios basically work as simplex connections and most sound cards are stereo, has anyone tried using the current sound card and feeding the radio in/out with one channel and operator audio with the other channel?

While this is not supported on the standard ASLA sound set-up if you use pulse audio which sits above ALSA you should be able to configure 2 virtual sound cards so the 'duplex' audio is handled via a single usb sound card.

I think this is basically the method NW digital radio use with their DRAWS hat, although the hat does more than a simple sound card.

nice addition to the R Pi build =) Thanks for all you hard work on
these projects and we all appreciate it very much =)

Just an FYI. The latest version of Mumble for Win has the ability to disable the automatic noise reduction and it is 99% better. Nearly the quality of Skype. I¡¯ve been using it with VNC for remote on a W10 system.

Hopefully coming to R Pi soon....?
