Re: Makerfocus dock

Just received my Makerfocus Power Board. Instructions are zip. No barrel connector. Their website doesn¡¯t show one. What is a good source?
Thanks,
Richard- KI5EVJ

I used the following script to uninstall and the reinstall GPS:

sudo apt-get purge gpsd gpsd-clients python-gps chrony python-gi-cairo

cd ~/Downloads

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/km4ack/pi-scripts/master/gpsinstall

sudo bash gpsinstall

(Got it from one of your posts)

Now ngps has satellites in it and it appears to be trying to link to them. ?No success yet, but at least something is happening.

Thanks,

I tried this and got the same results. ?I still do not have all of the BAP308 stuff installed. ?Only the Fldigi group and the GPS group.

cgps ?yields nothing. ?I know about the pbm with USB 3.0. ?I have the GPS dongle plugged into the 2.0 slot and I have installed a ferrite loop on the USB cable with about 10 loops. ?I let it run overnight, more than 12 hours, and I still get a cgps with n/a in all of the boxes.

Hello:

I had similar Conky/GPS issues, which I documented in an early forum thread, that diagnosed to the GPS not starting after BAP308 installation. Lots of emails and info, but what it boiled down to for me was to stop and restart the gpsd daemon in a terminal window.

sudo systemctl stop gpsd <cr>
sudo systemctl start gpsd <cr>

Once I executed these commands in order, cgps began to show data and Conky subsequently updated with gridsquare info.

If I installed GPS and Conky standalone, the GPS came up properly and Conky was good. But then completing the BAP308 installation with the excellent array of other available programs somehow caused the GPS to fail (not start?), with the gpsd stop/start needed to then get the GPS going. Unknown why.

Re: BAP on RasPi zero

Ahaaa. Another 'Ten-Tec' chap :-)
I'm an 'Argo' nut.
I've had them all at some time in the past. Now I just have 3 - my original 509, the 'Scout' and my Argo 2. All in regular use.
Anyway, back to Raspis

My shack PC is a Raspi-4, 8Gb memory and 240Gb SSD housed in a Desk-Pi pro case.
I run Raspian and Windows 10 on the thing -- and of course BAP in all its glory. Windows is really only for Winlink Express as there is no alternative OS to run it.
My Pi is really my Digital modes work station.
its coupled to my 705, G90, KX3, and my K3.

I have 2 other raspi 4's: One for my traditional 'portable' activities (wires and all) and the other for experimenting -- as I hate breaking up my portable bag or fiddling with my Shack PC to try out some idea I may have.
I use the G90 for SSB portable and the KX3 is now installed in my Go-Box -- which is what I want a lower powered Raspi for.

The 705 is so comprehensive a rig, I use it mainly for experimenting with external peripherals -- like the Raspi Zero, different interfaces and different portable antennas, atu's etc
I have several other QRP rigs --? as a quick sojourn to my web site: ?will reveal. That's about half of them :-)

I will try to get the 705 running with BAP on the Pi zero first -- as interfacing should be possible with a single USB connection.

The Pi zero has now been running for over 24 hours with FLRig, FLdigi and Conky running. No signs of 'crashes' and temp is stable at about 46c.
I too have powered it from a small battery pack -- to monitor current and see how long it runs. So far, so good.

73 for now.

Re: BAP on RasPi zero

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

just a suggestion that may help with conky.....

Conky is continually making calls based on a default refresh and an over rife=de that may be placed on individual lines.? If you gut the .conkyrc file to just what you would like to see say CPU Temp and maybe grid square for remote operations, it might not need to be disabled and can just run for you.? Both of those items could be setup up to say a 5 minute refresh to save cycles and you still have a relatively decent measurement of the cpu readily available.? Really glad to hear you are able to use it for your purposes.

Thanks,

Thanks, Bruce. I may try Fldigi again, then. I also overclocked mine 10% and I disable Conky when running other programs and that significantly improved operations. It really never gets hot, as you noted. As for adding more USB ports, I have a hub that I use to connect CAT, the sound card dongle, and the GPS dongle. It was also used initially to connect a keyboard and mouse when I was setting it up, but it has been run headless ever since. The whole thing is powered by the 5v port on a small battery pack (sitting on top of the rig in teh photo) that also powers the radio in the field, but just running the Pi it lasts literally for days.

Re: Build-a-Pi only once?

I wonder if there is value to putting a choice to delete the download/install directories if the install script sees the directory for a future update?
This is exactly how BAP works for new versions of BAP. It checks github to see if a new version is available and gives the operator a notice allowing them to choose to install the latest version or keep using their current version.

The barrel center is positive.

Thanks Bruce and please do keep experimenting! I never discourage experimentation. It is one of the best things about ham radio.

Bill,

The first thing to determine is does the GPS have a lock? Run this command in a terminal window:
cgps
and see if you have data.

As you are using the ARGON case, it utilizes the USB 3.0 port on the Pi. USB 3 is known to cause interference with GPS reception This isn't unique to the Pi.

You might want to try the GPS on your phone

Re: How to Resume a Failed Install

Greetings. I tried a fresh install today of the latest build on my RPi3 and it got to "dialogs/fldigi-confdialog.o" line and then just stopped. The system didn't crash but became very unresponsive (about 3 or 4 minutes to register a mouse move) so I had to unplug the Pi to get it going again.
Don't give up on the build in this particular spot. Especially on the Pi 3 where it may seem hung in this spot for a LONG time. I usually get everything started just before bed and it's done in the morning :-)

Makerfocus dock

Edited

Are there any installation instructions?
Checked site. I have everything hooked up with barrel connector with positive on the outer and ground in the center. Connected to power poles and to my 12v power supply.
Any advice? After further searching it says that barrel center should be positive.
Can someone verify this please.
Thanks

If using BAP, just go back to BAP and chose to reinstall the program, even if the menu says the program is installed.

I'm guessing that fldigi only partially installed and nothing after that in the install script. Is there any way to resume the build, or do I just have to delete the pi-build directory and start again? Thanks.

Hi Les, thanks.

I used the install command listed on git hub. Running BAP again seems to be working this time. Not sure why it quit the first time...

KM4ACK has a YouTube on the subject of the GPS not working. ?I followed it and get nothing. ?I can look in the /etc/default/gpsd file and it has the port assigned to the string that appears in the /dev/serial/by-id listing. ?I have in fact 2 GPS donagls one with a direct USB plug and one with a pod at the end of a USB cable. ?I currently have the one with the pod at the end of a USB cable attach after I rapped the cable around a ferrite core about 10 times. ?I will let it stay running overnight and see if it connects. ?I am not a rookie on the pi, but I do not know how to turn a txt file into an executable script? ?If you can please provide a reference.

Thanks for your assistance in this matter

Never mind...always helps to RTFAQ first. I found the Build-a-Pi script and got things going again.?
