Gus
3
Hi folks, I am in need of some emotional support today. Gus, my 9-year-old Seeing Eye dog has been experiencing some digestive issues for the past few months. He has periods of no appetite, where he will go for days only eating his food if I and practically hand feeding him, and even then, he doesn’t eat it all. There has been frequent vomiting and when he does eat, very unpleasant gas. He has had numerous tests, including testing for atypical Addisons and so far, we have no idea what is going on. The doctor is now recommending an endoscopy and ultrasound. I am not opposed to these tests, however, at this point, I am wondering if it is worth it for him. We have ruled out cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, or at least I think we have. If these tests are just to provide a beyond a doubt diagnosis of gastritis, is there really a reason to put him through all of that? I have forwarded the medical results to the Seeing Eye. The vet’s office will review them and get back to me with their advice. For now, I am just sad that it looks like Gus’s career is wrapping up and concerned over his health. I just want him to be my happy fun-loving dog again that makes everyone smile with his goofy charm. Patricia & Gus

[Nfbnet-members-list] Legislative Alert - February 27, 2025
Reply-To: "Shirek, Jesse" <jshirek@...> ? Dear Federation Family: We are excited once again! On Monday, February 24, Representative Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania introduced the Access Technology Affordability Act (ATAA) in the 119th Congress. The bill number is H.R. 1529. As a reminder the ATAA will create a $2,000 refundable tax credit for the purchase of qualified access technology for the blind. As you may remember, the ATAA is our second bill in this Congress. The first was the Blind Americans Return to Work Act (H.R. 1175), which was introduced by Representative Pete Sessions of Texas on February 10. This bill will eliminate the SSDI earnings cliff by instituting a two-for-one phase out of benefits for any income earned above the substantial gainful activity threshold. It is critical that both of these bills gain significant cosponsor support early in the Congressional session (especially the ATAA, which has a chance to be included in an upcoming tax package), and that’s where you come in. We need you to contact your Representatives in the House and ask them to cosponsor both the Blind Americans Return to Work Act and the Access Technology Affordability Act. When you call or email, you might say the following: "Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME], and I am a constituent of [REPRESENTATIVE NAME]. I live in [CITY, STATE]. I would like to urge [REPRESENTATIVE NAME] to cosponsor the Blind Americans Return to Work Act, H.R. 1175, and the Access Technology Affordability Act, H.R. 1529. These bills will eliminate barriers for blind people by instituting a two-for-one phase out of benefits for any income earned above the substantial gainful activity threshold in the SSDI program, and creating a refundable tax credit for the purchase of qualified access technology respectively. This will create a true work incentive for all blind Americans currently on SSDI and a method for blind Americans to be able to afford the access technology they need to obtain and maintain employment. Thanks." You can contact your member of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard and asking for the office in question. The number is 202-224-3121. We have also attached a contact list of House offices, sorted by state, to this email, but if you have any questions on office contacts, please contact Lindsey Walsh at lwalsh@.... If you contact your representative via email, please copy me at jshirek@.... Your calls and emails are important feedback for our members of Congress to receive and truly do make a difference. _______________________________________________ NFBNet-Members-List mailing list NFBNet-Members-List@... ED Press Release
---------- Forwarded message --------- From: U.S. Department of Education <ed.gov@...> Date: Thu, Feb 27, 2025 at 11:34 AM Subject: ED Press Release To: <pkepler@...> U.S. Department of Education Launches “End DEI” Portal U.S. Department of Education Launches “End DEI” Portal WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Education launched EndDEI.Ed.Gov, a public portal for parents, students, teachers, and the broader community to submit reports of discrimination based on race or sex in publicly-funded K-12 schools. The secure portal allows parents to provide an email address, the name of the student’s school or school district, and details of the concerning practices. The Department of Education will use submissions as a guide to identify potential areas for investigation. “For years, parents have been begging schools to focus on teaching their kids practical skills like reading, writing, and math, instead of pushing critical theory, rogue sex education and divisive ideologies—but their concerns have been brushed off, mocked, or shut down entirely,” said Tiffany Justice, Co-Founder of Moms for Liberty. “Parents, now is the time that you share the receipts of the betrayal that has happened in our public schools. This webpage demonstrates that President Trump’s Department of Education is putting power back in the hands of parents.” The Office of Communications and Outreach works with national, state, and local educational agencies, programs, and organizations to empower parents and families with information and resources to help them be full partners in their child’s programmatic, education and academic progress. Having trouble viewing this email? View it in your web browser Our work continues... Did a friend forward you this email? Newsletter Signup Dear Patricia, As I write you today, I cannot believe January is already half over and the 2025 legislative session starts next week! Disability Rights Oregon is ready for the long session and –– from now through June –– you will hear lots from us about how you can help advocate for Oregon laws and policies that benefit people with disabilities. But first, I want to make sure you know about several new laws we helped pass last session that are improving healthcare access, affordability, and equity for you and your loved ones right now. Support our advocacy work with a donation > New Year, New Laws Here’s a rundown of some of the most significant laws as of January 1, 2025, that will help people with disabilities live healthier, more independent lives in Oregon: Safeguarding Healthcare Equity: The use of discriminatory Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) is now banned from use when insurance payers are deciding what medical treatments the Oregon Health Plan will cover. This change ends a 30-year-old practice that prioritized healthcare for younger people and those with curable conditions over healthcare for people with disabilities, chronic health conditions, and older adults. Protecting Access to Medications: Insurance companies can no longer require patients to purchase medications from specialty pharmacies –– even if they need a doctor to administer it. Now you can access life-saving medical treatments and care where you choose and without unnecessary delays. Lowering Prescription Drug and Capping Insulin Costs: All payments for prescription drugs now count toward an individual’s out-of-pocket maximums. And, if you have diabetes, insulin costs are capped at $35 per month. As a result, people with disabilities or chronic illnesses can spend less money on high medication costs. Empowering Consumers via Right to Repair: Oregon is the fourth US state to require manufacturers to provide the tools and information necessary for consumers to repair their own electronic devices. For our community, this law offers greater affordability and access to repairs, especially for members who rely on specialized electronics or assistive technology. This year, our legislative priorities include working to expand the Right to Repair law to cover wheelchairs and other mobility devices, protecting people with mental illness, and increasing special education funding and accessible housing statewide. Stay tuned for ways you can help! ?? Opportunities & Announcements Submit Comments by January 17 to End Subminimum Wages! The US Department of Labor has requested public comments on their new proposed rule to end the practice of paying workers with disabilities less than others who perform the same job. This discriminatory practice has no place in modern society –– our community has the right to equal pay! Happy Birthday Gus!

Today Gus turns 9! I can’t believe my fun loving; goofy dog is 9 years old. My serious guide dog still loves rolling around on his back, kicking his feet, and scooting across the floor, talking all the way. He still loves to surprise people by sneakily dropping a toy in their lap when they aren’t looking. And my goofy dog still comes running with joy when he hears me grab his harness. Happy birthday Gus!
