"Gerry" Murphy, K8UYW, passed away on February 25, 2025, at age 88. In 1965, Murphy, then 28 years old, was stationed at the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Center in Davisville, Rhode Island. During his time off, he handled countless phone patches and messages to and from military-deployed personnel as a member of the Intercontinental Amateur Radio Net (IARN) on 14.320 MHz.—Hurricane Watch Net manager Bobby Graves, KB5HAV Dayton Hamvention? is coming up fast, on May 16-18. EmComm vehicle owners/operators will showcase/demonstrate their units. Emergency communications groups are invited to display their communications trailers, vans and trucks or other displays. There are many groups that are thinking about building units that would get ideas from the displays. Units should be fully manned, functional and demonstrate their capabilities throughout the show. Organizers encourage teams to have flyers or handouts describing their unit and its parent organization. The date for the 2025 Florida statewide AUXCOMM exercise is Saturday, April 12, starting at 0900 ET/0800 CT. Communications teams interested in participating should see the Florida AUXCOMM site for full details and team signup. The scenario: Florida is under siege as Cyberstorm unfolds—a devastating outbreak of tornadoes wreaks havoc across the state, crippling infrastructure and overwhelming emergency services. As the chaos peaks, a coordinated cyber-attack is launched, taking down internet and cellular networks statewide. With communications in disarray and panic spreading, emergency responders and amateur radio operators must step up to restore order and relay critical information. This exercise will test participants’ ability to adapt, communicate, and coordinate in the face of simultaneous natural and cyber disasters. One of the country’s leading ARES? groups, the Alachua County (Gainesville area), Florida ARES? organization, participated in Winter Field Day (WFD) this year, again using the facilities of the large county EOC. The operation was conducted along the lines of a FEMA exercise, with a written exercise plan produced in the form of an ICS-201 briefing document. Read the briefing document. Earl McDow, K4ZSW, with help from other volunteers, handled the 2.4 GHz Ubiquiti microwave mesh system, using AREDN networking. “We needed it because we operate two sites, one at the EOC and the other some 250 yards away in a grassy overflow field where the Sheriff graciously allowed us to place a travel trailer and some antennas,” reported Gordon Gibby, KX4Z. Happy New Year everyone.
Happy New Year everyone! Our next meeting is January 14th, 5pm. Other than voice, our other core way of communication is through the Winlink system. For those of you that are new, Winlink is a way to send Email out via our radios, then have it go straight to another radio to be decoded or hit a radio to be injected into the internet to be delivered. If we are ever requested to help the county with communications to Salem, Winlink is how it will be done primarily. Voice and other options are viable, but these are a distant second for Oregon Emergency Management (OEM). So I have a little bit of homework for the new people. Please take a look at the link below and watch some videos. If you can, please sign up for a Winlink account. If you are having problems doing so, let me know and lets get you into the system. Now, if you have a Windows based PC, download Winlink and the other programs listed in the video. If you have a laptop PC, put Winlink on there as well. So that at the next meeting we can go over the program on your own machine. Some of the programs are free, some request a donation, others require a payment to get additional functionality. For what we are doing right now, you do not need to pay anything. Once you get comfortable with the software and want to continue with ARES, then you can evaluate if you want to purchase or donate to the software cause. I don't want anyone wasting money if this isn't for them! Now as far as connecting your radio to a computer, it will depend on what radio you are using. Some might require some additional hardware, some radios only need a USB cable to communicate. To start, lets not worry to much about getting a radio connected. You can start to learn how to use Winlink by pushing the Winlink generated Emails directly to the Internet. It is a good way to practice while you are getting gear for your radio. The first radio we will work with though will be your VHF radio (hand held, mobile or base radio). If you are not wanting to wait till the meeting to get hardware for your selected radio, reply to this email and those that are using Winlink already can help you with what you probably need to get started. The required hardware and or cables can be used for other amateur digital projects like FT8, Slow Scan TV or Radio Teletype (RTTY) So it will be useful to have. https://www.winlink.org/content/quick_start_amateur_radio_and_shares_stations Tyson W7BL

CHD Winter Preparedness tomorrow
Good evening, everyone Sounds like we have 2 or 3 volunteers (Cathy, Mike R. and David) for tomorrow. It starts at 3pm and runs until 6pm over at the CHD building here in La Grande. I’m going to meet up with Cathy tomorrow with all the fliers we can hand out. If anyone else would like to join them, please do! These things are usually easy. You just need to be willing to talk to people about ham radio. The one thing we really want to do is get names, phone numbers and email addresses of people that stop by. If they are not willing to give us that info, not a big deal. If that happens then try to keep track of the number of people that stop by to visit. While this is going on, I should be able to take call if there are any questions. Tyson W7BL

Thursday night nets 2
Hey everyone, So not so long ago I moved the net from 7pm to 6pm. I had hoped that it would do two things, attract more people and also make it a bit easier on me. Unfortunately stuff has come up and I'm finding myself less available on Thursday nights at 6pm. I'm going to have coworkers out on medical leave and another one moving to Coos Bay, so I may not be getting back into town on some days till after 6pm. What is everyone's thoughts on moving it back to 7pm? Tyson W7BL

IronOr24 Exercise
The following is the scenario from the state of Oregon for the IronOr Exercise Disclaimer: This scenario is designed for exercise purposes only. The scenario is intended to be realistic but are not meant to be a precise representation of earthquake impacts or response activities. The information in this report is not predictive; there may be significant differences between this scenario and published modeled results and actual losses following a real-world Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami. Exercise Scenario Timeline At 8:00 A.M. on October 25, 2024, the Cascadia Subduction Zone released the centuries-long stress built up on the margin between the Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American Plate. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake started and encompassed the nearly 700 miles (1100 km) long fault. The earthquake impacted the entire fault zone, rupturing from end to end, causing one great earthquake that was felt throughout the Pacific Northwest. Within seconds of the fault's rupture at the southern end, seismic waves started impacting coastal communities in Curry and Coos Counties. As the rupture expanded northward, shaking intensified on the south coast of Oregon and Northern California. The shaking intensity along the coast rose to MMVI (strong shaking) and continued to rise as the shaking continued. As the locked zone released the pressure, the North American Plate slipped ~80 feet (~25 meters) west, causing an uplift of the ocean floor. This displacement caused the water column to rise, generating a tsunami. The tsunami split with waves going both east and west at about 500 miles per hour. By 8:02 A.M. on October 25, 2024, Eugene, Salem, and Portland communities began to feel the first shaking. The shaking continued for 2-3 minutes. While the shaking was not as strong as on the coast, the nature of the long seismic waves generated by a subduction zone earthquake means that more damage likely occurred to larger, older structures. The rupture continued northward, and the coastal areas of Washington state began to feel the effect of ground shaking. Across Oregon, power went out, and cellular communication was significantly impacted. A significant number of unreinforced masonry, non-ductile concrete, and tip-up buildings collapsed, and bridges across the Coastal region and Willamette Valley collapsed or shifted off supports. Coastal subsidence caused a drop of 3-6 feet (1-2 meters), depending on location, which in turn caused an inrush of ocean water. At 8:15 A.M. on October 25, 2024, the first tsunami surges arrived on the outer coasts of Curry and Coos Counties. On the North coast of Oregon, the leading trough of the tsunami caused a drawdown, and the water temporarily receded from the coast. The initial waves were followed by a series of increasingly larger surges, averaging 30-50 feet (9-15 meters) high and in some areas, even higher. At 8:45 A.M. on October 25, 2024, the tsunami surges reached the Clatsop Spit, entered the Columbia River, and impacted the town of Astoria. The tsunami generated by the earthquake wrought destruction along the Pacific Northwest coastline. These waves inundated coastal towns, sweeping away homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble, and thousands of residents were either swept out to sea or trapped beneath the debris. The force of the water uprooted trees, overturned vehicles, and left a thick layer of mud and wreckage in its wake. Ports and marinas were decimated, disrupting the local fishing industry and cutting off essential supply lines. The environmental impact was severe, with the tsunami waves causing extensive erosion and depositing hazardous materials across the landscape. Additional Tsunami inundation area can be found through the following GIS map – areas in yellow and brown have been significantly impacted. At 9:00 A.M. on October 25, 2024, the first of thousands of aftershocks was felt along the coast. These aftershocks will lessen in frequency and magnitude over time. In the first 24 hours after the main shock, there wer

CJIS Training
Good morning It appears that everyone that wants unescorted access to the EOC will need to take a class, this includes everyone that has had access in the past. The Criminal Justice Information Services Security Awareness Training Level 1 (CJIS), is a short online class that should only take about 30 minutes to take. A few of us have already taken this class or higher due to our job duties, so not everyone needs to worry about it unless your certification has expired. The Level 1 certification most of us will be taking is only good for 1 year. There will be more information to come on this, but if you get an email from Catherine Falck (cfalck@...) asking you to take this class, it is legitimate. After you have taken the class, please email me your certificate, I will update Ham Club Online. If you have already taken the class, please let me know as well. For those of you that work for the county, I'm not going to worry about you as your jobs already require you to take classes. Tyson Brooks W7BL
