Hamradio/GMRS operator helped emergency response in houston
A member from Houston club shared her experience and how she helped the daughter neighbor. Lot to learn about it I receive permission to share the story, with you all. // Last night a limb fell on some electrical wires behind a house across the street from where my daughter lives in West Houston. There were flashes and spark like explosions happening over and over. Two houses were in jeopardy of catching fire. My daughter and several neighbors called 911,311, Centerpoint Energy for over an hour and could not get anyone to answer. When my daughter called me to tell me about it, I got on my radio and nobody was available to respond. I then tried a GMRS channel and there were 2 people monitoring the calls. I gave them the address and within 15 minutes a constable and fire department showed up. A couple of hours later the trees behind these houses caught on fire. Since 911 was still not available I got back on the GMRS channel, and they got the fire department to come back. In my opinion, the people monitoring this channel prevented a house fire and I was extremely grateful. I just received my technician license in January and got it for emergency reasons. It already has paid off well. I just wanted to share my experience. Cathy N0JAB WSAB 405 " // Thanks Amado Pereira KJ5DGS

For more than 50 years, military and amateur stations have taken part in this event, which is an interoperability exercise between amateur and government radio stations. The event is open to all licensed amateur radio operators and will not impact any public or private communications. The AFD Crossband Test is a unique opportunity to test two-way communications between military communicators and radio stations in the Amateur Radio Service (ARS), as authorized in 47 CFR 97.111. The annual DOD message will be transmitted via RTTY on 14.667 kHz at 1400 and 2000 UTC. These tests provide opportunities and challenges for radio operators to demonstrate individual technical skills in a tightly controlled exercise scenario. Military stations will transmit on selected military frequencies and announce the specific ARS frequencies monitored. All scheduled times will be in Zulu, and all scheduled frequencies will be upper sideband (USB), unless otherwise noted. Information on frequencies, times, and other technical information can be found at DoD MARS - Armed Forces Day at, https://www.dodmars.org/mars-comex-information-website/armed-forces-day . FCC Batch Filing System (EBF) Restored
FWD de KR1ZAN ... FCC Batch Filing System (EBF) Restored On Friday morning, March 29, 2024, the FCC¡¯s Electronic Batch Filing (EBF) system was restored. All VEC organizations use that system for filing exam sessions, individual applications, and club license applications. ARRL VEC staff transmitted all backlogged sessions and application files into the FCC EBF system. So far, approximately 150 backlogged files were successfully processed by the FCC. Hopefully, all files received at our office within the past week will be accepted and processed by the FCC within the next 24 hours. There have been a few lingering issues with the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS) and EBF System. A few exam sessions and applications did not process in the EBF system, and they had to be refiled. Applicants continue to report that they are not receiving the FCC payment email. As a reminder, applicants do not have to wait for the FCC email to pay the fee. As soon as the application is in the FCC system, the applicant can log into the FCC¡¯s CORES system (https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do) and pay the fee. CORES payment system information can be found at https://www.fcc.gov/licensing-databases/fees/cores-payment-system. Additional information and instructions are located on the ARRL VEC¡¯s FCC Application Fee web page at http://www.arrl.org/fcc-application-fee. Other applicants are reporting that they are not receiving the automated email with the link to their new, upgraded, renewed, or modified license. The FCC instructions for obtaining the official authorization (official license) is located athttps://www.fcc.gov/wireless/support/knowledge-base/universal-licensing-system-uls-resources/how-obtain-official. FCC Batch Filing System Unavailable Again
Here we go again ... de KR1ZAN FCC Batch Filing System Unavailable Again As of Wednesday morning, March 27, 2024, the FCC Electronic Batch Filing (EBF) system used by all VEC organizations for filing exam sessions, individual applications, and club license applications, is not processing VEC files again. Unfortunately, this means applications for new and upgraded licenses, as well as individual and club license filings are not being accepted into their system for issuance. ARRL VEC alerted FCC staff about the issue, which they are working to resolve. The EBF system was accessible on Monday and Tuesday, so we were able to submit hundreds of applications into the system before it went down on Wednesday. As soon as the EBF system becomes available and fully operational, ARRL VEC will submit the backlog of sessions and applications. The EBF system outage notice is listed on the ULS website https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/universal-licensing-system. A timeline for the fix is not mentioned.

FCC to Require Two Factor Authentication for CORES Users
Make sure you have a valid email address in CORES, before the change in March 29. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced an upcoming change to the Commission Registration System (CORES) that licensees use to pay any application or regulatory fees, manage or reset a password on an existing FRN, or request a new FRN. Beginning March 29, 2024, multifactor authentication will be implemented. Users will be prompted to request a six-digit secondary verification code, which will be sent to the email address(es) associated with each username. The user will then need to enter the code into CORES before they can continue. In a public notice, the FCC said this change will make the system more secure. "This additional layer of security will further safeguard against unauthorized access, thereby enhancing the overall integrity of information contained within the CORES system and improving the security of user data," it read. The FCC recommends that users confirm they have access to their username account email and to add a secondary email address, if need be. Resources are available for those who need assistance with the system. For inquiries or assistance regarding the implementation of multifactor authentication on CORES, submit a help request at https://www.fcc.gov/wtbhelp, or call the FCC at 877-480-3201 (Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM ET).
