Repeater Internet Connectivity Discussion

开云体育

I wanted to open a discussion? regarding internet capability at the repeater site.
I forget what the internet status is for our system. I recall it's painfully slow and expensive.
I know we've discussed it, but these discussions aren't archived in a document tracking status and progress on different ideas, I wanted to start over in a place where it's at least archived and searchable (here on the e-mail list).

(1)
What is the provider now? Data rate & cost?
I think part of the issue is the static IP we need for remote access?
Would Dynamic DNS help?

(2) There was discussion of being provisioned part of the fast fiber coming in to the tower for other services.
What is the status of that?

(3)
If Dynamic DNS is a possible solution, then it opens up internet connectivity solutions.
The next time we have several people at the tower, we should take cell phones out and do a cell survey in the tower with the door closed, Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, does anything get inside with a decent signal.

Tim,

Yes, we do!? I attempted to improve our internet about a year ago and every option was much more expensive.? Maybe this time we can put together a list of options and their cost and have a discussion at a board meeting.

Also, I think that PARK has hit a home run with our new Communications Director!??

Thanks, Miranda for your insights and expertise.? Once the election is past we can go over what is at the Prestige Water Tower, how to get access, the document with device information, etc.

Thanks,
Dick

Thanks for taking a few minutes to look at the K5PRK-10 packet node.

As it happens, as we were disconnecting the jitsi call, I connected to the N5REG-10 packet node in Rowlett.?

Connect, download a single email to disconnect took 60 seconds.

Looks like we need a better internet connection.

Thanks,

The current provider is ATT and we have DSL 7 MB Down, and 0.7 MB up (Measured) A little over $50 per month

We need a routable IP address. In theory ours could change. It has not in the past 15 years that I know of. But we still treat it as a dynamic IP address.

The wireless carriers do not have routable IP addresses.

The city has fiber service service 5 feet from our cabinet. It has empty ports. We tried to contact the carrier (I cannot remember the name) and they never responded to let us know the price. They have 45 Mbps up and down (Measured)

It is not routable. It is on a 10.XXX.XXX.XXX network. But it has public access. We could use it for outbound traffic. I have not been able to find someone willing or knowlegeable to configure our router to use ithe cities for outbound traffic.

Spectrum said they would check, they never responded.

Frontier said no

Things change, it might be worth another try for faster service. Fortunately what we have works. It may be slow but it works for 3 D-STAR repeaters , APRS, Winlink, 2 All-Star repeaters.? Where we are hurting is backups off site.

APRS and Winlink are 1200 baud. very slow or 0.17% of our 700 kbps uplink.

Allstar uses 8 kbps links Broadcastify is probably < 8 kbps links.

Not sure about D-Star but it is around 4.8 kbaud. The 1.2 GHz data is 128kbps.

We are probably using less than 25% of what we have.

Dick, Miranda, and I were talking about this last night after observing in real time the slowness of our packet node

?

This is a Communications Director issue.? Dick and Miranda have the lead in this and are investigating the issue and possible solutions. Let’s give them time to perform their role and report back.

?

They will report the issue and status to the membership at the next general meeting and will present further findings and status to the board at our next meeting, where we will have an opportunity to discuss together..

The wireless carriers do not have routable IP addresses.

How do we treat our static IP address as a dynamic one?
Would we be able to use a dynamic one (say from a cellular carrier) and "dynamic through" to our hardware?

The city has fiber service service 5 feet from our cabinet. It has empty ports.

I have not been able to find someone willing or knowlegeable to configure our router to use ithe cities for outbound traffic.

Could we leverage a separate Multi-WAN router for inbound on one port, outbound on another port?

Spectrum said they would check, they never responded.

Things change, it might be worth another try for faster service.

With the requirement of a static IP for our router so we can tunnel through it?

Tim mentioned downloading from Winlink was problematic to futile.
Connecting to another node and downloading to 60 seconds.

Also, I think it works for all those digital services because they are seldomly used?
I do not have usage metrics so know actual daily usage time, in minutes, for each of those digital connections, nor how many might be used at the same time.
