2025 Field Day newsletter

Sorry Neil, I meant to post this this to the board
?
In light of the hurricanes in Florida and the likely increase in the number and severity of weather incidents, it seems reasonable to add emergency preparedness to our Field Day in 2025.? Ham Radio is relevant and in does have a role to play in regional disaster assistance.? The Hurricane Tracking Center in Miami broadcasts on 40 and 20 meters so HF is not just viable, it's relevant.? If power is off, then HF may be the only way to send civilian messages outside the disaster area.
?
?
Take a look at these articles that Tim and Dick posted:
?
So, perhaps PARK could make its Field Day mission more about the role we as Hams can fulfill in an emergency.??
?
In preparation for this year, I'd like to propose that we begin?reaching out the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the City of Plano to integrate and participate in our Field Day to prepare PARK to take on an emergency role if we are needed.

We need a routable IP address. In theory ours could change. It has not in the past 15 years that I know of. But we still treat it as a dynamic IP address.
The wireless carriers do not have routable IP addresses.

How do we treat our static IP address as a dynamic one?
Would we be able to use a dynamic one (say from a cellular carrier) and "dynamic through" to our hardware?

The city has fiber service service 5 feet from our cabinet. It has empty ports.
They have 45 Mbps up and down (Measured)
We tried to contact the carrier (I cannot remember the name) and they never responded to let us know the price.

It is not routable. It is on a 10.XXX.XXX.XXX network. But it has public access.
We could use it for outbound traffic.
I have not been able to find someone willing or knowlegeable to configure our router to use ithe cities for outbound traffic.

Could we leverage a separate Multi-WAN router for inbound on one port, outbound on another port?

Spectrum said they would check, they never responded.
Frontier said no
Things change, it might be worth another try for faster service.

With the requirement of a static IP for our router so we can tunnel through it?

Fortunately what we have works. It may be slow but it works for 3 D-STAR repeaters , APRS, Winlink, 2 All-Star repeaters.?
APRS and Winlink are 1200 baud. very slow or 0.17% of our 700 kbps uplink.
Allstar uses 8 kbps links Broadcastify is probably < 8 kbps links.
Not sure about D-Star but it is around 4.8 kbaud. The 1.2 GHz data is 128kbps.
We are probably using less than 25% of what we have.
Where we are hurting is backups off site.

Tim mentioned downloading from Winlink was problematic to futile.
Connecting to another node and downloading to 60 seconds.

Also, I think it works for all those digital services because they are seldomly used?
I do not have usage metrics so know actual daily usage time, in minutes, for each of those digital connections, nor how many might be used at the same time.

If Dynamic DNS is a possible solution, then it opens up internet connectivity solutions.
The next time we have several people at the tower, we should take cell phones out and do a cell survey in the tower with the door closed, Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, does anything get inside with a decent signal.
