Versatile/Inexpensive TNC/Radio for Winlink
#SaturdayMorningProjects
This idea is from Keith Baldwin, K5CBM: Just a place to hold some links Kenwood/baofeng style interface to a TRRS style interface with a little bit of circuitry in the middle. Couple with a software TNC, such as Direwolf on the computer and we have a 2M/70cm winlink node. https://github.com/johnboiles/BaofengUV5R-TRRS https://willbradley.name/2015/08/09/aprs-via-rf-cable-for-connecting-aprsdroid-to-a-baofeng-radio/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Baofeng/comments/87ub5g/make_a_cable_to_interface_baofeng_to_trrs_jack/ -- 73, Patrick KM5L

interesting technique with a spade connector
3
I’m sure you all have done like me, and doubled up on the amount of wire for a spade connector simply by folding it over, however this was an interesting way of doing it: https://youtube.com/shorts/VKB2P50RlKo?si=Q2YBz2F05G8-dQnN -- 73, Patrick KM5L

Common Mode Noise Filters
3
I'm curious if anyone has experience with Common Mode Noise Filters? I've been looking at one HRO has as follows: https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-017080 I'm much closer to the Metromess than most club members and definitely saw test results indicating common mode noise on two different HF antennas. The test is to choose a frequency and adjust receiver volume to hear noise when the coax is completely removed from the receiver at the shack end. Then the coax center pin only is connected and the noise heard on the receiver increases. That's expected. The last step is to tighten down the outside braid/shield connector. A significant noise increase indicates common mode. Anyone with experience using these or doing the test at their QTH? Thanks.....Greg AD5DR Sent with Proton Mail secure email.

serious Radio subject matter: K1RX
4
So I was watching this YouTube video that was just posted this evening, it’s an interview with K1RX who is a renowned contester. The title is interesting because essentially it’s saying that you should really have your Station ergonomically set up in order to be a good contester. But I would even challenge that and say if you want to be a good amateur radio operator all together you should strive to be very efficient and as ergonomically skilled as well. That’s why I like buttons and switches and knobs and dials. With two hands and technically 2 feet you can be pretty darn efficient with your radio in a small amount of time. This would help you with just about any Radio sub-hobby, be it contesting or even just rag-chewing. When I say this I’m thinking about things like noise reduction techniques especially, or tweaking for optimal signal noise and or audio prefereces. A mouse is not the most efficient way to do that, bring on the knobs! Anyway take a look at this video and see if you agree… https://youtu.be/cHwCkUoTW1c?si=gAbLw45tj2imcyl3 -- 73, Patrick KM5L

Solar arrays - tracking the sun
I have solar in my future, and I am convinced I can save a lot of money in the number of panels by tracking the sun. So I searched to see if someone has done it, sure enough! Here is a video of a young man that used an arduino, plus his welding skills to create such a device (has a stepper motor and basically a large cog). The description has a file you download that has the code. Really cool! So I think even though his project was just for one panel, all you'd have to do is find a larger stepper motor and larger cog wheel and the same software and frame concept would work. I noted he used very light weight aluminum square tubing. Anyway, check this out, would love to see others figure this out too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMuM8086uv8 -- 73, Patrick KM5L

ARRL code practice broadcast now
Check out 14.047 or so, W1AW is transmitting slow speed code practice. They do this daily and it?s an excellent way to build speed. They start out real slow and build from there. -- 73, Patrick KM5L
