LoTW, awards, etc.

Hello All, I mentioned a while back that I was trying to get K5BAT renewed in LoTW and I know you've all been unable to sleep worrying about it. I did finally get it done once again, but I had to let an ARRL guy remote-control my PC. I started looking at our (K5BAT's) totals on LoTW. IIRC, where were at about 98 for DXCC and up in the 48 area for WAS by band. Shameful! But of course most ops have been K5PXP or individual owner calls. I guess the notion of using the BAT to snag Bouvet kind of fizzled with the dxpedition itself. Looking forward to the hamfest. It's been a while for sure. I'm still enjoying getting used to the IC-7610. I'm pretty pleased overall. OK, that's it. Time to heat up some leftovers and do the Wordle. 73 Nick, WA5BDU

RTTY Roundup
2
I spent some time learning how to make MMTTY & N1MM+ work with my shiny new IC-7610 and then worked about 30 in the ARRL RTTY thing just completed as a "proof of concept". Was hoping to QSO K5CS and did see him and then WB5BHS getting lots of RBN spots and presumably tag-teaming at the BAT. But we're too close. I got a brief print once on 40 and kept missing the windows on 80 which is one band where it might have worked. Anyway, kind of fun. Hey, I worked HZ1WRTC on 40 last night. Good therapy for me as I've been bummed about not working any good DX. The new rig is very cool. I've barely started to learn to use it though. 73 Nick

C-3 repairs May 11 at 10 AM
7
Craig has a lot of work scheduled in May but we arranged for him to come fix the broken tip on the C-3 on May 11 at 10 AM. That can be adjusted for weather if needed. The tip is 3/8 inch, 32.5 inches long, so I guess it’s a matter of pushing in a piece several inches longer, measuring, and then drilling for the new rivets. I’m pretty sure I have some of the recommended rivets that I got for my C-3. If the rivets are still in place, the rivets will need to be drilled out and removed and the broken tubing removed before anything else is done. It would be good to have some extra nuts available for the U-bolts in case one is dropped. I’m not sure what size they are but maybe the C-3 manual says. The driven element will need to be lowered down to the deck for repairs. It still shouldn’t be an all-day job, though. 73, Dennis

AQP report
I sent in the entry and log file. Here's the final report: 40M SSB - 166 20M SSB - 48 2M FM - 1 40M CW - 85 20M CW - 105 Total QSO's - 405 Multipliers - 58 Score - 34,510 The C-3 radiated a little but was better for CW. I started out on it and worked some stations but never generated a pileup. After the SSB station worked all they could on 40, they went to 20 and it was obvious the C-3 was not performing well. SWR was higher than when it started the day, and there was noise and interference to the other rig that probably came from breakdowns in the feedline. After an hour or two of not being able to generate enough callers, the SSB station finished up on 40. I tried to use the C-3 on 20 CW but by that time, got almost no answers at all. I wanted to get to 200 CW contacts but it was just impossible. We set our goal as a total of 400, and thanks to Al and John on SSB, was able to get there. Thanks to Nick for doing our Lotw upload. We had fun and the weather was nice. We may not win the multi-operator/multi-transmitter category, but there may be only one entry. Considering the antenna struggles, I think we did well. 73, Dennis

[ccc7] AQP preliminary info
Sounds like a great effort from the BAT. My version of the truth: I had a pretty good drive and experience. Started at a city park in Elkins (WASH) and saw that conditions were not too bad. I limited myself to 50 W due to battery issues. Almost gave up before starting, thinking my rig was broken until I discovered that I had one of those noise reduction things switched on that made copying CW impossible. Next I headed over to Crosses, Brashears and points east finding a spot for MADI. Went to a nice spot next to the river right past St. Paul but it turned out there was S9++ noise at that spot, even with no houses or buildings in evidence. So I drove on further and found a similar spot across a one-lane bridge on the river that was quiet. Next I slipped into NEWT on HWY 16 in an area with some really high peaks (2300' to 2400') and found a little wide spot with a forest service road where I could park in the shade. Wow, that place was ham heaven - I've never heard such an absence of man-made noise. After doing what I could on 40 and 20 I tried 146.52 FM and worked guys in (near) Jasper, Scranton and Paris. Never did work anyone on SSB. I listened a small amount on 20 but didn't hear any ARQP activity. After that I turned south on HWY 21 and went on down to the Ozone Recreation Area for JOHN. I was supposed to try hitting the BAT after that but decided it would be too far. No cell service but fortunately I managed my 1st contact with K5BAT and let Dennis know on 20 CW. I'd heard him 20 minutes or so earlier but too many stations were calling. That was kinda cool because my phone was giving an emphatic "No Service" message so I thought I'd have to drive south until it came back before I could send a text. But ham radio got through where cellular couldn't in this instance. I heard other AR mobiles but they were generally too weak on groundwave for a QSO. Worked K5UR a couple times, blasting away from his home station, I presume. Driving was a lot less exciting after that - west on I-40 I stopped at the Ozark rest area for FRNK and then going up I-49 I set up in a city park in Chester, just up the road from Mountainburg. Got home at 6:30 and put in a little time from my driveway for BENT. A few DX stations called me. Always a bit surprising but some of those guys who pulled me out on multiple bands must have stations that are out of this world. OM, DL, JA and UA. Now I have the daunting task of typing in all those QSOs because I logged on paper. Had to create one new LoTW QTH. Couldn't remember what I did last year when COVID kept me home, but I see I had a big time running 500 W and working 481 stations. This year 7 counties and probably about 200 QSOs. 73 Nick, WA5BDU

AQP preliminary info

Operators were WB5BHS, W5RZ, and NK5K. Al had his first experience in calling CQ and running stations and did a great job. Conditions weren’t the best. As things got dark, 40 meters was very noisy and signals were generally weak. No one really popped out of the noise and it was usually just mush. You had to try to grab a letter or two and get everybody else to hush while you dug him out. We ended up with 215 SSB contacts and 190 CW, for a total of 405. We had 34,394 points. That’s not as many compared to some past years, but we have won the whole state with less. However, the main thing is that this was essentially a 40 meter effort. The C-3 feedline is toast and needs to be replaced. When we cut the connector off the coax, water was still coming out, although slower than in the video I shared. We cut off a few more feet and it was still wet. The shield looked terrible and the inner conductor was black. We spliced the coax and ran some on 20 meters but SWR was about 3:1 in the phone band and we could hear a lot of noise on the other rig. It seemed like something was breaking down somewhere, which could be expected with water-filled coax (yes it is 9913) that had gone through the big freeze. We didn’t hunt multipliers or bonus stations, because we considered ourselves lucky to be on the air at all. We could have chased some multipliers on 75 meters but the only antenna we had was a 75/40 M fan dipole, so we couldn’t work both bands at the same time. Early in the day, I was able to work a little 20 CW on the C-3 while John and Al worked 40 SSB, but the C-3 SWR deteriorated and it finally became unusable. It was a fun day, the weather was nice, and it was a learning experience, so it was all good. Also, Tracy’s little wieners and sausage balls were excellent! 73, Dennis

My AQP Plans
9
Posting to both CCC7 and K5BAT reflectors. Let me make it clear that I’m not “hosting” or “sponsoring” anything. I finally figured out that those terms mean “the guy who brings the food”. I’m just throwing ideas out there for discussion. I will be at the BAT for the Arkansas QSO Party this Saturday, unless the weather turns out terrible. We have a working dipole for 80 , 40, and 15 meters. The feedline for the tribander was full of water, but it may have dried out by now. After last night, it may be even more full. My plan is to show up a little before 9 AM and look at the C-3 feedline. If SWR checks out OK, I’ll put on a new PL-259 and we’ll try to operate with it. Someone can start operating on 40 meters while we check out the C-3. If the C-3 will not work, we will put up a 20 meter dipole. We always make <>20 contacts on 2 meters. I could bring a rig and computer and amp keying cable, and we have the Yaesu FT-840 at the site. Who will show up on Saturday? I have invited Josh and Steve, who have been with us on past operations. Needless to say, anyone receiving this message on the group e-mail reflector is welcome. I never object to targeted invitations. I am not in favor of an open invitation for everyone, though. If someone puts a “come one, come all” invitation out on Facebook or the internet, I might not be there. We have too many people who haven’t been vaccinated and we who have can be a threat to them because we are moving around more and might be infected and not even know it. I’d estimate that less than 25% of shoppers at Wal-Mart wore masks the last time I was there. Let us know if you can make it, even if for a short time. We’ll discuss food and other logistics after we get a list of those who might be there. Please let us know ASAP, but if you’re on this list and find you can make it at the last minute, let us know and come on. Dennis NOT in charge of anything - but trying to start a group discussion

Subject: Arkansas QSO Party (May 8th) ?t's almost time for the Arkansas QSO Party! It’s an easy 12-hour event on Saturday, May 8th that allows for a full-day experience or drop-ins at your leisure that won’t take up your entire weekend. It's getting more popular every year. In fact, for the past 10 years, the ARQP has had more participants than the year before. Many hams outside of Arkansas will be looking for Arkansas stations to add to their Worked-All-States list, grid square list, counties list, etc. This might be your chance to be on the other end of a pileup, perhaps for the first time! All the information you need can be found on the newly redesigned www.arkqp.com. Logs are due by May 22nd. Instructions on submitting your log can be found on the QSO Party website. Let's stay safe, have fun, and spread some good cheer via RF from The Natural State. - The Noise Blankers Radio Group, sponsors of the Arkansas QSO Party -------------------------------------------------------------------- ARRL Arkansas Section Section Manager: James D Ferguson Jr, N5LKE n5lke@... -------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from messages, go to: http://p1k.arrl.org/oo/8f6aa9eee8353593d485ad8423322d62
