Lake Martin Amateur Radio Club Meeting 5
First time email on Groups for me. Hello Licensed and not yet licensed Amateur Radio enthusiasts, We are gathering Thursday, April 10th at 6:00 pm for our in-person meeting. ATTENTION: the location is changed. For this meeting we are having our conversations at the Courtney residence. GPS 96 Alabama Drive, Alexander City or use the following directions: On highway 280 on the Dadeville side of the Tallapoosa River Bridge turn south onto Lake Ridge Road (second right after the bridge going east) Turn Right on River Run (second right very curvy road, watch for pedestrians) Turn Left on Alabama Drive (third left) Second House on the right YELLOW. Park in the low or high driveway, should be plenty of room if we squeeze in. Parking on the cul de sac past the house is ok also, Try to stay off the grass, it is very muddy. Weather permitting we will use the deck, too cold or rainy we will have the living room. We are getting to see some of the results of a year of work. Some of you helped us after the tornado disaster. I wanted to extend a thank you with the invitation. My Hamshack is not fully operational yet but plans for antennas are underway.

Steve Waters AE4IN ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: ARRL <memberlist@...> Date: Fri, Mar 28, 2025 at 10:17 AM Subject: ARLP011 The ARRL Solar Report To: <ae4in1@...> SB PROP @ ARL $ARLP011 ARLP011 The ARRL Solar Report ZCZC AP11 QST de W1AW Propagation Forecast Bulletin 11 ARLP011 From ARRL Headquarters Newington CT March 28, 2025 To all radio amateurs SB PROP ARL ARLP011 ARLP011 The ARRL Solar Report On Wednesday, March 26, around 2130 UTC a Major Storm occurred. At one point, the Planetary A Index was 49, and the Planetary K Index was at 6. Solar wind parameters are expected to remain enhanced due to continued coronal hole high-speed stream influences with waning effects likely by March 29. The Solar Radiation Storm Forecast for March 29 and 30 has a 1 percent chance of a S1 or greater storm. No S1 (Minor) or greater solar radiation storms are expected. No significant active region activity favorable for radiation storm production is forecast. The Radio Blackout forecast calls for a chance for isolated R1-R2 (Minor-Moderate) radio blackouts due to M-class flare activity will persist through March 30 primarily due to the potential exhibited by AR4043. From Space Weather Prediction Center: "Since February 25, 2025, the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has presented new coronagraph images and data from the GOES-19 Compact Coronagraph-1 (CCOR-1). The images and data are updated every 15 minutes. "Imagery from the Compact Coronagraph (CCOR) instruments is used by the SWPC Forecast Office to characterize activity in the outermost part of the Sun's atmosphere known as the corona. This includes monitoring data for transient events like coronal mass ejections (CMEs), as well as monitoring the impacts the corona has on the steady stream of plasma, referred to as the solar wind, emanating from the Sun. Ultimately, information derived from CCOR images will be used as inputs to the WSA-Enlil model to forecast the impacts of CMEs and the solar wind on Earth. "Note: Until such time as GOES-19 becomes operational, currently planned for April 4th, the animations and data are to be considered 'preliminary and non-operational.' In particular, CCOR-1 data will not update between 3/21 and 4/1 due to the spacecraft drifting to its operational location." Weekly Commentary on the Sun, the Magnetosphere, and the Earth's Ionosphere - March 27, 2025, by F. K. Janda, OK1HH: "Most forecasts, including those from NOAA, have been consistent over the past week that a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm would develop on Sunday, March 23. In fact, a CME was expected to directly impact the Earth. Although the source of the CME was only the M1-class solar flare from AR4028, even weaker CMEs can produce strong geomagnetic disturbances, especially on days around the equinoxes. In the end, however, paradoxically, 23 March was the relatively quietest day. "However, a large coronal hole caught our attention this week, while we expected that once it reached the central meridian region, the solar wind stream would head directly towards Earth. This is what happened and in the following days, especially on March 26, a G2 class geomagnetic storm developed. The solar wind speed increased from 400 km/s to 700 km/s. On March 27, the increase continued to over 800 km/s (1.8 million mph). "Shortwave propagation conditions were particularly degraded along paths through the higher latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Outside of these, there was also a more pronounced decrease in MUF on routes that crossed South America and the South Atlantic where geomagnetic anomalies are located. "While late March and early April are periods with traditionally better-than-average shortwave propagation conditions, this time our expectations will only be partially met. Solar activity is lower than would be consistent with the current phase of the solar cycle - and disturbances are relatively common." A partial Solar Eclipse occurs on March 29, 2025. ARRL Move to ExamTools for VE Testing 3
The ARRL is phasing out field-stocked printed exams. See the following information. Some changes are coming to the ARRL's VEC program that will affect exam teams in the US. According to an ARRL representative, the VEC department is phasing out the supply of field-stocked printed exams and encouraging VEs to download and print out their own from online sources such as Exam Tools. The ARRL will continue to supply other exam-related forms such as the FCC Form 605 or the CSCE and session reports. The ARRL is also encouraging VE teams to explore electronic, on-line testing whether in person or remotely. Our local team will start using exam tools to conduct our testing sessions. The tests may still be printed out or conducted using a tablet or smart phone. If you have participated as an ARRL VEC and want to participate in the future, you will need to need an account with exam tools. Current VECs will need to follow these steps. Go to https://exam.tools/ and under Assist with or Manage exams – click on Register now. Follow the instructions – you must use a personal email account. After registering you will get an email – use that code to verify your account. Log into the system and click on profile – you will have to upload an official copy of your license. It will tell you the steps. Go to https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp login and download an official copy – you can upload it on their website. Some of you completed these steps in 2022. If you don’t remember, try to login to exam tools. If can log in, click Profile, scroll down and click on Volunteer Examiner Credentials. You should see ARRL-VEC listed. Mike/KD4COO and I are setup at the moment as the Team leads. Note: If you know of anyone that wants to take a test – we will be glad to accommodate them. This new system will allow us to schedule a session quickly. We will no longer have to wait for the ARRL to send us material. 73 Danny/KB4MDD

444.525 Tower Update 9
As some of you know, I had a pine tree fall on one of the lower guys for the 444.525 repeater tower. This occurred during that big wind storm that put many out of power. I finally got a tower company to come in and remove the pine tree from the trapped guy (Danita KK4VSD cut up the tree). They re-tensioned the tower (which was overdue) and it is again standing straight and tall. I also need some antennas removed and new ones installed. The tower company is planning on coming back tomorrow (3/13/2025) and Friday to perform that work. We are adding 1 220mhz decibel (db-224-JJ) (which I have had in storage for 21 years and is no longer manufactured), 1 db224-E (vhf ham band), and 2 smaller dual band antennas. The two decibel antennas will reside at 130 feet. You are invited to attend the antenna raising. The location is 169 Old Shepard Road, Dadeville. Approximately 7 miles north of Dadeville on Highway 49. I will be monitoring 33 / 444.525 to provide updates. Right now, I don’t know what time they will come or if they can even work tomorrow due to the weather. I suspect I will hear from them tonight or early tomorrow morning. I will send a follow up email when I know something concrete. These changes will allow me to get the 224.24 repeater back on the air. (That will take more work – it is working on the bench, but has no repeater controller.) The K4YWE digi may be on the vhf antenna for testing. I still have to prepare two 130 foot runs of 7/8 hardline and 1 run of 1/2 hardline. (I got one finished last night). 73 Danny/KB4MDD

Yaesu FT1000MP
Mike, I purchased a used Yaesu FT1000MP. Below, I describe problems that may result from my lack of familiarity with this radio or perhaps from the radio itself. In brief, the radio receives on 20-meters but with, in my view, poor to middling reception and noise. So far, I have been unable to make it receive on 40-meters. For comparison, on the same antenna my Hermes Lite receives on 20 and 40 with good to excellent reception and noise that is mostly filtered out. If there is a club member who has this radio or a similar radio, I hope to get his thoughts/help to check this out. Please advise if you know such a member and THANK YOU. Paul Paul D.
