Sticky Ham and radio related groups.io Groups of interest #reference
Hi all, This is a "pinned" topic containing a sampling of other amateur radio-related groups.io groups of interest - there are many more groups than are listed here. NOTES: Most of these groups are "Premium" groups (owner pays a yearly fee) and have "Files" and "Wiki" sections which may contain very valuable resources - be sure to check them out - these areas are accessed by links in the left pane of the web page. The K3CUJ group operates under the "free tier" of groups.io and does not have these sections. Some of these are "Public" groups and you can post on those without joining. Others are "Private" groups that will have a "Join" button on their home page - most of these expect you to set your identity to your First Name and Callsign after joining. Usually you can read and search the messages/topics regardless of your "join" status. Sticky Technical Blog - Batteries and Charging #reference
Simultaneous use of and charging of LiFePO4 batteries Question posed: Recently I picked up a 12AH LiFePO4 battery from ExpertPower and a 12V/5A smart charger. My clever idea was to rig the battery with a dual set of power poles, one set for the radio and the other for the smart charger. The charger could be plugged in charging the battery as needed and the radio would draw from the battery. The setup works well when the charger is not plugged into the 120V A/C. However, when plugged in and the radio keys up the charger thinks there is a short (due to the 8A current draw) and executes a funky power on/off dance. Other than replacing the 5A charger with something like a 20A charger, is there something I can do to create a stable setup? Thanks..... 73, DE John / KC3FDL John, LFP batteries do not need to be trickled charged like SLA batteries. You can charge them up to maximum capacity and leave them that way for a year with minimal loss of charge. However, i was told by the customer service rep at Bioenno that it’s recommended you connect them to a charger every 2-3 months to allow the Protection Circuit Modules (aka Battery Management System) to rebalance the individual cells in the battery. If an LFP battery sits on the shelf for a year or more without any charging, it’s possible the cells might become too unbalanced to start recharging them. The other reason to do a top off charge every 2-3 months is it will prevent the battery from losing any significant amount of maximum charge capacity. LFP batteries don’t lose more than 3% of total charge capacity if uncharged for a year which is amazingly low. However, loss of charge capacity accelerates over time, and doing a top off charge every 2-3 months prevents loss of even that low 3%. Battery companies generally do not recommend leaving a charger on LFP batteries. They definitely don’t recommend trying to charge the battery while it's simultaneously connected to a load. If you need to keep your rig on the air during utility outages without missing a second of operation time, you need to build or buy a purpose built charger like the one ( https://www.westmountainradio.com/product_info.php?products_id=epic-pwrgate ). It switches the rig between utility power and battery power seamlessly. It’s charging program for LFP turns off battery charging when the battery is fully charged. Note, if you are operating using only solar panels and batteries you must use a solar charger between the panels and the battery. In this case, solar chargers are actually designed to allow the battery to power a load while the solar panels are contributing power. Bioenno recommends not using the load connector on the solar charger if it has one, but connecting the load directly to the battery. See their FAQ for LFP batteries at https://www.bioennopower.com/pages/faq Regards, Mike NN3I ==== [DaveT] Edited amalgamation of a technical exchange on the K3CUJ "elmer@" e-mail list, reproduced here with permission from the two participants and for the purpose of making the information available to all club members now and in the future. -- 73, DaveT

World Amateur Radio Day at the National Capital Radio and Television Museum in Bowie - April 18th, 2025 #event
All, The NCR&TV museum holds an amazing collection of old radios, televisions, and radio and TV programming memorabilia in a small 2-story house in Bowie. If you have any interest in radios and TVs from their inception to the late 20th century, I highly recommend a visit. They are also going to participate in the World Amateur Radio Day event on April 18th. They have a well-equipped ham equipment configuration at the entrance to the museum. Note there is a fee to enter the museum if you are not a member, but no fee to see the ham set-up. I joined the museum several years ago which allows access to the museum and access to their monthly zoom sessions where they cover many aspects of the early broadcasting networks, personalities, and programming. ======== Join NCRTV for World Amateur Radio Day! NCRTV will be taking part of a nationwide amateur radio event highlighting our very own Ham Radio station – K3RTV! World Amateur Radio Day, held on April 18 each year, is celebrated worldwide by radio amateurs and the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). It was on this day in 1925 that the IARU was formed in Paris. Join us in celebrating 100 years of IARU! Our Ham Radio Open House is an exciting opportunity for all community members to get hands-on with ham radio and wireless technology. NCRTV’s Ham Station – K3RTV – will be broadcasting all day long, providing demonstrations to the public, and highlighting some of the unique and interesting ways that amateur radio can intersect with fun and learning! We will also be demonstrating smaller “Handie-Talkies,” discussing the role amateur radio can play in emergency communications and how the SKYWARN Amateur Radio Network assists the National Weather Service! This event is part of a nationwide effort organized by The National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL) and is part of Citizen Science Month in April where ordinary people across the country will work to document 1 million acts of science! Tours of the museum will be offered at a discounted rate of $5.00 per person ($3.00 for Bowie Residents)! There is no charge to join us for our HAM activities! The Museum is in the 1906 Harmel House located at 2608 Mitchellville Rd., Bowie, Maryland, 20716. If you are an amateur radio operator and are interested in helping out by volunteering for this event, give us a call at 301-390-1020, or email Judy at info@...! -- 73, DaveT

Drone for placing antenna in tree 6
Howdy, With the warm weather, I'm outside trying to get an HF antenna in a tree. I have an EZ Hang antenna launcher, but on my third shot today the rubber strap broke. I'll have to contact the manufacturer to buy a new strap so I can repair it. The EZ Hang is a neat concept, but it's hard to get the line to go precisely where I want so I'm not confident it's the right solution for my situation. I heard that some people use a drone to place fishing line or a lightweight rope in a tree. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do drones have some mechanism to carry and release a rope? 73 John W3LJ Ellicott City, MD

I ordered 3 of the "RAKwireless WisBlock Meshtastic Starter Kit US915 Base RAK19007 + Core RAK4631" I'm thinking of putting one of them in router mode out on the balcony, and seeing what I can see and talk to. One of the others connected to my phone, and one connected to my laptop. probably worth noting, I plan to use 915 Mhz

Deal on Dual Band HT with built-in Packet Modem
I thought I would pass this information along since it is such a good deal. BTECH has a new dual band HT out that has a built-in TNC that uses KISS mode. It can be used to send Winlink email from your cell phone using Bluetooth. The price right now delivered is $148.40 using the discount code “hr2-uvpro”. I suspect this discount code will expire on 1/1/2025 since it was a Christmas special. I got mine yesterday and it works great. The link to the site for purchase is below. This is a good article on using Hamsticks (in my case Sharksticks which are similar) in a dipole configuration. I've done so in the past with good results. However, putting up a ground mounted vertical is easier than erecting and guying a Spiderbeam pole and attaching the Hamsticks to it. However, if you are more interested in NVIS and lesser distant QSOs, then a Hamstick dipole is a better to go than a vertical. You can also turn the Hamstick dipole to get some directional gain too. EFHW or long wire antennas are effective too, but require more real estate than a Hamstick dipole. https://www.eham.net/article/2621

Did I ruin the connector on my coax? 3
Hi, I'm trying to pull coax through an outside well. I thought the connector would fit through the hole so I used needle nose pliers to pull on the center pin. I pulled a little too hard and the pin together with the dielectric insulator. I'm pretty sure that by doing this I've ruined the connector and I need to cut it off and put on a new connector. I'm super bummed as this is a 125' piece of coax and I bought from ABR because they do such a good job of putting the connectors on it. What's your advice on how I fix this? John W3LJ
