The VERMONT QSO PARTY provides the opportunity for Amateur Radio Operators to contact and exchange QSO information with Vermont Amateur Radio operators. All licensed amateur radio operators are invited to participate. Stations outside Vermont work Vermont stations. Stations within Vermont work everyone. The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) will be conducting a research campaign January 27 - 31, 2025, and amateur radio operators can help monitor the transmissions. Operating frequencies and times will vary, but all HAARP transmissions will be between 2.75 and 10 MHz. Actual transmit days and times are highly variable, based on real-time ionospheric and/or geomagnetic conditions. All information is subject to change and information on times anddates can be found at haarp.gi.alaska.edu. This campaign is being conducted in support of research proposals from the U.S. Air Force, the University of Florida, the Naval Research Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the University of Houston. HAARP is a program of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Reception reportsare appreciated and may be submitted online at: haarp.gi.alaska.edu/form/reception-reports. In addition to the research campaign, HAARP is also supporting the Ground Imaging to Rocket Investigation of Auroral Fast Features (GIRAFF) sounding rocket mission, which will be launched from Poker Flat Research Range in Alaska. The GIRAFF launch window is January 21 to approximately February 5, 2025. More information on GIRAFF is available here.

How to measure current drawn by a 100w transceiver at 25w 36
My Yaesu HF transceiver is spec¡¯d to draw 23A @ 13.8VDC when transmitting at 100 watts. For receive, it¡¯s spec¡¯d at drawing 3A @ 13.8V. How can I determine how many amps the transceiver draws if I transmit at, say, 25 watts? (No, 23A x 1/4 = 5.75A is not the correct answer; I wish it was that simple. It should be more than that.) In practical terms, let¡¯s say I want to take the transceiver to the middle of nowhere and power it from a Bioenno battery for one hour. Again, let¡¯s say I¡¯ll be transmitting at 25 watts. (Yes, I know I won¡¯t be operating ¡°key down¡± for an hour straight.) What amperage battery would I need? (Never mind ¡°the biggest one you can afford!¡±) This is sort of an exercise in¡something, and I really do want to know. Thanks, Howard N7SO
