Free-for-all Sunday?

First, thank you to all who have been operating tirelessly to field the huge volume of contacts this year.
Special shout-out to Chip, N2YO, who apparently operated all night ... at 35 wpm, last night!? Unbelievable.

Question for the group.
It's a tradition that the final day is a free-for-all, meaning each colony can have more than one op on a band, same mode, at the same time; no rules really.
Except not for digital modes, as that would be too confusing (right, digi ops?)

I don't care for this; other states field many folks and it really clogs the bands, but I have not been able to convince the boss to stop it.

What do K2B team members think?? Would appreciate any thoughts.
I suppose ultimately it will be whatever each individual wants to do.

Also, after the event is over, I'd appreciate if you could email me your log in adif or Cabrillo format, at your earliest convenience.?
I will summarize and circulate K2B results as well as 13 Colonies overall summary.
Then we'll talk about K2B bling.

Many thanks,

David, K2WPM

Sorry for the additional email.
I've received several comments / complaints / suggestions.

First please make sure to stay clear of band edge.? For SSB, I've always understood that to be 3 Khz, or 5 Khz to be safe.
Band chart attached.
Second, make sure you are within your license class privileges, same concept for maintaining a cushion.
Third, please respect the Considerate Operator's Guide - several frequencies that should be reserved for SSTV, etc.
Fourth, Hurricane Beryl is headed for Texas; please respect 14.325 and 7268.? I know a couple other colonies seem to be intentionally operating on those frequencies - maybe because they are clear, but I hope we won't.
Fifth, I've had a couple complaints about individuals glomming large chunks of slots.? I'm thrilled to see slots filled, but please leave some slots for others.
Finally, I see more thunderstorms possible this weekend.? Please, please do not take risks.? At the first sign of storm, please shut down / disconnect / ground, do whatever you need to do to be safe.? Ham radio just isn't worth it!? And let us know - it's a big state, so folks in another area might be able safely to operate.
Thanks again,

David, K2WPM

I’m not crazy about having more than one op per band/mode on the last day. I think it’s unnecessary on phone and CW. It would be a disaster on FTx, as you suggest.?

40 phone was a trudge this morning but one guy said I gave him the clean sweep so that made my time worthwhile.?

Looks like the weather will let me operate this afternoon. Yay!

David, is there a file name you would like us to use for the adi log we send you? I should remember but don’t.?

73, Kay N3KN

Thanks Kay, you guys have been doing a wonderful job on 40 meters phone.
I can only handle it at night ....

Don't worry about file names, so long as adif or cabrillo.

I don't have any feelings pro or con on having multiple ops on a band except FT4/8.? But I should say that, on multiple occasions when I had time to operate,? my 1st or 2d choice slot for CW had been taken so I found something else to do.??? I did have a problem with a duplicate op this morning on 15 FT8 although my call was in the 10-11 am cell. ? I have never heard so many weak stations on cw as I have this week...? Upon completion I will send adif files with my call sign for easy reference.

George,
??? My fault for the duplicate op. Somehow, my system changed from 20m to 40m without my noticing. Must have been a hidden mouse click on FT8. My apologies. I completely agree - no duplicate ops on any given band-time slot.

One of the K2 coordinators claimed there is an FCC rule prohibiting more than one transmission per mode per band at same time.

I was not able to find such a rule, but I was reminded of this rule, which is pertinent:

?

97.119 (d) When?transmitting?in?conjunction?with?an?event?of?special?significance,?

a?station?may?substitute?for?its?assigned?call?sign?a?special?event?call?sign?as?shown?

for?that?station?for?that?period?of?time?on?the?common?data?base?coordinated,?maintained?

and?disseminated?by?the?special?event?call?sign?data?base?coordinators.?

Additionally,?the?station?must?transmit?its?assigned?call?sign?at?least?once?per?hour?during?such?transmissions.?

I am opposed to having multiple stations on a single band-mode. ?There are few enough callers on CW as it is. ?If I see that we have other same-band K2B signals in addition to me on any of my reserved CW slots, I'll simply quit.

I know at least one other "Colonie" has been so absent on CW all week that its appearance yesterday necessitated split-frequency operation. ?Perhaps they need multiple operators on the last day to make up for insufficient presence the first 6 days — but we in VA certainly do not, on CW at least.

W0AE was also added which replaced my call sign on 15 meters ft4 10-11am for Saturday July 6.?
I believe after talking to Justin K4HXM that if someone has the 13 Colonies sheet and N1MM open at the same time and they are looking at the sheet they may forget to pick back on N1MM to log their next contact so it ends up on the sheet wherever they happen to be on the sheet??
I believe you may be able to check the history of which ever cell that the call sign in question was placed? Hope that helps.?
Now W4WDK ? (Wesley) was Ko4gne?

Subject: Re: [K2B-13Colonies2024] Free-for-all Sunday?

I don't have any feelings pro or con on having multiple ops on a band except FT4/8.? But I should say that, on multiple occasions when I had time to operate,? my 1st or 2d choice slot for CW had been taken so I found something else to do.??? I did have a problem with a duplicate op this morning on 15 FT8 although my call was in the 10-11 am cell. ? I have never heard so many weak stations on cw as I have this week...? Upon completion I will send adif files with my call sign for easy reference.

Wesley and David,

That's exactly what is happening.? I caught myself doing it at least once.? I realized what I did right away and was able to fix it.

I do have W0AE in my log once, so maybe I did it again and didn't catch it.

It's not a big deal if you're just web browsing during those 2 to 5 minute waits between calls.? It does mess up the spread sheet though.? Sorry if it was me.

Carol, if you get this, I am off 20 meters.
Bounced by a "net."? Could not find an open frequency anywhere on the band.

David,

I feel your pain.??? GB3COL hijacked my frequency on 20m after I had been on it for 40 minutes and spotted several times. ?? ??
