Re: Post event summaries
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýReport from Massachusetts: ? Greetings to All from Team K2H in Massachusetts, ? We were down a few ops from last year including one major op that made over 4K contacts last year. He is helping with WRTC this summer. But we still did pretty well with 18,974 contacts. Most were made with SSB, FTx, CW, and others (Satellite, etc). ? Some of us had some issues with QRN/QRM, T-Storms, and the noise floor and our jobs got in the way of getting on the air. But we all had fun. Probably the most surprising was how well the last day of the event went with it being our 2nd best day of the event. ? I've already got most of my ops saying they can not wait until next year and also have a few new people contacting me about being an op next year. ? My personal goal for next year is to reduce my noise floor at least a few S units. That will make a huge difference in being able to pick out those weaker stations. ? Now to watch the new mail person bring all the card requests and she must be wondering what the heck they all are. ? 73 to all from K2H, ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

My QSO count was down a little from last year.? I think due to some poor band conditions during the week plus the never ending barrage of thunderstorms that had my tower cranked down and antennas grounded at some point almost every day.? The overall increase in QSOs over last year is great, probable due to increased participation on our part. I heard the split CW pileup generated by one of the other states one night and was a bit miffed.? After a day or two I realized why.? There were many on line complaints about that state being very rare.? Based on what I listened to in that pile up, only experienced contesters or DXers were getting through. Our main audience in this event is the every day ham with no interest in the previously mentioned.? I am a CW almost only kind of guy and like many of my CW team mates, our rag chew speeds might exceed the wildest dreams of many, but I am willing to QRS as much as needed to accommodate anyone that calls.? QSO rate is not the goal here.? I think that we saturated the bands is good.? It puts everyone on a more even playing field.? Lets keep it up. Another great week celebrating our Country! 73, Chuck K4QS

I agree.? I've been playing the event for at least 10 years, and never failed to send my contribution, get my sweep and the certificate.? The certificate goes into my shack notebook along with all the other "participation" certs.? Don't really need the QSL cards these days, or have space to store them.

Re: 13 Colonies / K2B mugs
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI have a thought, and I don't mind if it is summarily rejected.? Stilllllll.... 13Colonies asks for $5 for a nice certificate. For some years I send the $5, and I am on a relatively restrictive fixed retirement income.? I don't think it's that much for an individual to fork over!? But as I read between the lines in these messages, a significant portion of those qualifying for the award do not in fact include $5 with their submissions. Why? Because it is explicitly stated that you don't have to send $5. 1. I know of no other organization that exempts submission of money for an award based on a claimed inability to pay. Indeed, in our case no reason be given.? Just don't submit the $5.? Try getting an award for free from ARRL, for example. 2. Even a high school kid on a lowly allowance can spring for $5 nowadays.? If a ham can pay the electric bill for his/her operations and owns a station, even with a dipole antenna, s/he can afford $5.? Most hams have rigs that cost plenty and they can afford $5. They see they don't have to pay and so don't. 3.? Somebody who wants QSLs can send a bunch of SASEs, as they would need to do under normal QSLing procedures.? That would costmuch more than $5. My conclusion is that if somebody wants a fancy certificate then it costs $5.? No questions asked about where the $5 came from!!? Starting next year.... I had one good run of about 90 DX on 20. Had to stop due to family responsibilities. I tried calling DX again the next day and all I was getting was stateside. So I turned the top beam to the US, but felt guilty because another K2B was signed up for 20SSB.
I switched between the top and middle beams and worked about 20 more DX stations, but could not generate the pileup I had the day before. I like your idea of marking with a different color. Next year, if invited, I would like to try to get more DX on 20 and
perhaps 15.
