Moderated Resizing plans of Eco 520

I am very appealed by instead of building eco6 to rescale eco 520. But thinking that is there some foreseeable challenges that comes from resizing the plan??

520 appeals to me because of the simplistic sails that can be furled as much as neccessary. Easy operation and easy fixing, looking to build boat that would last from father to son when well kept.

Is resizing and option or is it just bad idea?

Hi

Resizing is never a good idea. POINT

It is acceptable until about 5%, at which point more will need changes, like the beam of the hulls, for example.

To make it even easier, the ECO 6's rig can be changed to use vertical furling, as on the ECO 7.5. (Photo, ECO 7.5 rolled main sail.
A slightly higher mast can omit the wishbone. To keep costs down, stacked Aluminum tubes can be used for the mast.

Thanks Bernd for straight forward quick reply!

I see so then it would make more sense to just reconfigure eco6's rigging instead of resizing the hull. I am interested about making wooden main mast (hollow inside) Just finished one for small sailing boat This would basically allow any size to be made and for few hundred bucks you get hella good mast, which is easy to remake also in case of need be.?

Does the main plans come with vertical furling plan or would this need to be custom ordered from you??
As of a designer do you see any downsides on going vertical furling, like would i lose some upwind performance or anything else on sailing characteristics??

Thanks for pointing out the facts.

So more logical way would be fitting eco 6 with something similar to wishbone rig.?

Do you see some negative sides on going wishbone on eco 6?
Would it be affecting sailing characteristics in meaningful way?
Lets say something like performing less to upwind? or losing sailing speed??

I was thinking I could make the hollow wooden mast, I just finished one for small sailing boat. This would also keep the cost down, and be easy to rebuild if need be one day.

Hi Peets
?
as Bernd has suggested, plus in earlier discussions you started, there are often options for rigs. In other words you could have a rig on the 6 that is simple and effective, or one that is sophisticated and expensive. Some of these points were raised in your earlier posts, when talking about designs.
?
Im a bit curious to know exactly you want from a design as in your earlier posts you talk about voyaging from Finland to the Med. Of course the simplistic answer is a large boat will do the job easier, but on the other hand a trailable boat could be towed from country to country with frequent stops to enjoy day or overnight sailiong at desirable areas. Could you explain a bit better what you are looking for??
?
BTW I worked in the marine paint and resin industry for many years, and naturally there were quite a few sailors and boat enthusiasts there since staff benefits for boat building supplies were obvious. The favourite answer to the question in the lunch room of "WHAT BOAT SHALL I BUILD/BUY?",? was 'WHATEVER YOU WILL GET THE USE OUT OF".??

I was very interested in this mast for the eco 6. Is it possible for you to send me the drawings with measurements for the eco6? How much would this cost?
Thanks a lot.

Currently I am rounding up the options what I would be able to build and what would most fit my usage. I am also lining up my use case as realistic as possible, its not fully settled yet. I am working currently to complete small 3.5meter goose explorer. This will be only to sail baltics. The next project would be something larger to build that would allow better to live on board for longer periods.?

Current outlines are:
- Lasting for years
- Anything can be self fixed
- Would sleep 2-4 person
- Suits beaching for kitesurfing purposes (especially summer travel)
- Mount, Mini dinghy/sups when cannot access directly to beach.
- Can be left for year or two without worry and then go continue sail when schedule allows.
- Running laptop, fridge, cooker with firewood, small heater (ie. 100w electric blanket or oil heater or something along those lines) (400w-800w solar, most likely fitted on back end wing extension)

I am currently 34 years and would love to build boat that would support me for coming 10+ years without breaking the bank.?
The build would start when I can spare 2-3 months full time focus on minimum to get going. It might take longer to finish but should be standing the weather at that point. This might be on coming year or in 5 years. Just want to have this tought out when the window of opportunity comes to realize it.

Hi Peets
?
It is always good to try to be realistic ;-))
I like the Goose Explorer from Perttu.? A nifty and easy-to-build boat. Have fun.
?
The ECO 65 is a logical choice for what you want.
The boat is easy to beach. Nothing in the way. No keel or other UW obstructions.
Rudders and boards can be retracted.
Fitting out, electric and electronic, is what you want. There is room for solar collectors on the deck.
I am against wing extensions. There is a lot of resistance at high wind speeds till dangerous.
?
In the meantime
?
have fun

Pete Hill's stretched KD860 is for sale here in New Zealand. It has a wood stove, like what you want. You could buy it and sail it home. It has already been round the world.?
?
In any case I think you need something larger than 6 metres for extended living aboard, and also a boat that is left for 1 or 2 years unattended is likely to need maintenance no matter what it is built from. That is, if it is even there when you get back to it after the 2 years are up.?
?
Anyway, it is good to think about all these things. Best of luck

Hi Peets,
?
Couple of us are getting a group together to DIY with some professional help the KD860.? See our chats in the other group ('Choosing a design').? We may do it in Thailand or Cambodia.? Go read our chat and let me know your thoughts.? Besides the KD860 has more space for all you mentioned.
