Moderated Choosing a design
I am interested in building one of your catamaran designs. Iused to own a Wharram Tiki 30 with a pod and I am looking for a design with more comfort which can be trailerable to launch site approx 1000kh away. There will be be a crew of 2 or 3 experienced people building and I would like to finish in 1 year. Can you recommend a design . Thank you Pst

Hi XungYung,
?
I am planning on using a professional boat builder or DIY for the KD860...........looking in Thailand.? I think the other people interested is Alain and Hamza.? I intend to start this project sometime in 2025.? Maybe we can get together for a better build price from a boat builder or pool resources.? I am located in Singapore like Alain and Hamza.
?
Let see where this goes!! lol lol....? |
Hi, ahbeng
This is a good idea. I have recently been screening construction sites, and I am mainly considering Thailand or the Philippines.
If I choose the Philippines, it means I need to explore step by step on my own.
If we can build and discuss together in Thailand, we will definitely be able to avoid many detours.
From what I have read so far, I am not sure if there are any manufacturers in Thailand that take on plywood boats. I do see a lot of vacuum infused fiberglass boat manufacturers and aluminum boat manufacturers, but I am very much looking forward to new progress. ^_^

If you go the DIY way, you only need to rent a place with enough space to build, no need anything else, just make sure that the rental contract is long enough for you to complete the build. You don't want to look for and move to another place half way through. If it is a DIY boat, ensuring it seems pretty much impossible. For registration, that can be done anywhere but you will have to move the boat according to the regulation. In my case I intend to register in Thailand as I am living there and don't want to bother moving to another country every 6 months.
?
If you go through a professional boat yard, then you have to discuss with them regarding the way they will handle everything, including certification and paperwork for insurance. The cost could get really high.?

Hi Alain/XungYung/Hamka,
?
If you are a DIYer, maybe we can get together rent a place in Thailand (preferable cheap....ha ha ha ), hire a local experience boat builder (should be also be cheap.....ha ha ha again), and build three or four KD860, and if Hamka joins in.......should be four.? Base on simple calculation.........an experience boat builder in Thailand will be about 20k to 30k USD per year!? Rental of site maybe another 20K USD.? An experience boat builder per year has about 2000 man hrs.? From what I read and people's experiences about the KD860 build process, it about 1200 hrs to construct one basic hull (customizations not included) for an Amateur, so DIYers plus an experience boat builder on contract should reduce it to 800 hrs.? Materials cost about 10K USD for a basic build based on an Aussie who build a KD860 in Australia (should be cheaper in Thailand), and this used to be the boat kit price from CKD (South Africa).? Should have economies to scale, and efficiencies if three or four are built.
?
So........base on my simple math -> Four KD860 basic hulls will cost 80K to 100K USD to build if resources are pooled!!
?
Customization budget for each boat can be? 20K to 40K USD depending on rigging, electronics and electrics.? So..........should be about 50K to 60K USD for a sail away oceangoing KD860 catamaran.
?
Also, if it goes well, we have a catamaran boat building business!!!? Lol lol lol.......maybe Alain can set it up in Thailand as a company after that!!!'???
?
Let me know what all of you think!!? I am semi retired, so I can organize this if all are keen!!
Conrad ?Note:? Found a boat builder based in Cambodia (just moved from Thailand)

Hello Alain.
Assume okoume plywood and masts are easily obtained. I have summarized 3 questions for this.
?
1. If we find a professional shipyard, they are responsible for helping you register the ship and insure it, but the price is very high.
?
2. If we DIY, it cannot be registered in Thailand, so it is not suitable for you.
?
3. If we hire professional boatbuilders, can they help us register the ship and insure it in Thailand? Do they allow foreigners to participate in the construction process?

1. Nothing is done for free, so all those services will add cost. Not sure how much they will charge for registration and certification for insurance. The best it to discuss this with the shipyard upfront.
2. I have not looked into this. For now I am too busy to DIY and have not the space for it. I would assume that there is always a way to get things done in Thailand ;-)
3. The problem with work in Thailand for a foreigner is that you need a work permit. So it will be a complicated "arrangement" with boatyard to work full time on the boat alongside with their worker. Then, as the customer, you should be able to overlook the construction of your boat and provide direction and advice without it being considered as employment. Some grey area here.? |
Allan and Lee I have seen a European building a Didi 26 in Thailand by some workers next to the beach somewhere. I do not think you have to go to a professional boatyard to do this. All builders make a plan. Some protected area where you can work out of the sun and rain is fine most boats are built this way. If one or both of you can be supervising you can build a boat as good as the boatyard with relative unskilled labour. Cheers Philip Malan
