Moderated DUO 800 vs DUO 800S

Hi all!

?

My first post here. I am looking for some trailerable (at least easily transportable)? and demountable platform for small family sailing and holidays in Croatia.
Both of these seem a good fit for my purpose. I would prefer bi-plane rig (easier and faster setup, Berndt says it sails better too :) )

However, non-S version is significantly lighter and theoretically could fit on a light trailer (EU, up to 750 kg total mass) which would not require me to upgrade my license and car. :)

Are there any other key differences?

S has significantly higher payload but that is not too important for me.

Any comments appreciated.

Kind regards!

Hi Etoimene

my first question would be how many in your family? Any of the boats that require assembly will mean that you will use one whole day each end to assemble and disassemble at the end of your holiday. The smaller designs that require no assembly will mean a faster build time, cheaper to build and rig, faster and easier to rig when you go sailing. The first Duo 480 builder (Tomas) with his long cabin version had his wife and two girls on board for extended cruising. Then of course you have the new Duo 520, Eco 5.5 and 6. The 6 may require special trailer requirements but it is a very roomy boat for it's size. The bigger boats like the 800? would be great if you are going to leave it on a mooring for the summer and only bring it home for the winter.

Bryan

Found something at

except above S has/is:
- wider symetrical hull
- toilet
- hull accomodation
- faster under low wind situation (would be good for my usual conditions)
- nacelle is a bit bigger (probably could be done on non S version)
- dagger boards (don't particularly like - complications in build and handling, like - better performance)
- Each hull sports a cockpit (like)
- doubled the righting moment!!!!

?

For non-S I found "The 2022 edition hulls have more volume", so maybe some more hull use could be squeezed out of them with hatches ...

I'll be back. :)

Hi!

Thanks for comments.

Only 3 of us, but might be a person or two more on occasion.

DUO 800 mentions only hour or two ...but that is definitely something to think about in case of short term trips.

I wanted the biggest boat but still trailerable. ECO designs have very little outside space (out of total space) which is crucial for Mediterranean ... nobody stays inside, except for sleeping ...
I did consider ECO 5.5, but rejected it for the above reason.

This is exactly what I had in mind.

Comparing the DUO 800 and the DUO 800 S is difficult. Perhaps also a bit of my doing. Because they are very different.?
?
The DUO 800 has asymmetrical hulls. These can be built flat on a surface. Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eExsRiVj20Q? It becomes clear that nothing can get faster than this system.
How does the boat look? Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI8h9rMUsWA
?
The DUO 800 S hulls are symmetrical. They have, of course, more space. For windward performance, we use dagger boards here.
There is room for a toilet and more. By the way, the best toilet has the DUO 800. See the drawing (and observe no 13). Do you want to comment on that? Ha, ha, ha, be my guest.?

Parallel rig or not. Depending on where you live, carbon tubes for masts are affordable, available, or not (New Zealand and France are good for getting them for reasonable costs).
Building them yourself is, of course, possible. Time-wise costs, constructing a carbon mast takes as much time as a DUO 800 hull.?
?
Trailern, the DUO 800 is (relatively) easy to trailer. With the DUO 800 S, you need a bigger car than the DUO 800.
Accommodation on the S is easy for up to four. For the DUO 800, 2 persons and a child. Or a sort of Iglo tent on the cockpit for another 2 persons.?
Cost-wise, the DUO 800 S costs about 70% more than the DUO 800
Construction time is about half the time of the construction of the DUO 800 S.
Seaworthiness. Both are the same. With the DUO 800, many longer journeys were made. From, for example, the Netherlands to Norway. Regular weekend
trips from the Netherlands to the UK and France.

Thanks Bernd!

Very useful ..

BTW, I have seen the toilet solution on 800. Brilliant! :)

How about the DUO660?

I think I am going 660 way ... :)

I saw Bernd's post saying something like "find the design you think would cover your requirements and then pick one below"! :) :) :)
