Moderated Choice of plywood, Was: Re: Carbon tupes for free standing masts
Hi Bill,
A year ago I discussed with Bernd about the choice of ply. One of the key consideration is weight. He said that impregnated marine ply are usually very heavy and not suitable. From what I leant, a regular sheet of oukoume ply after being covered by 2 layers of epoxy is water resistant. The only thing to take of are any hole you make into the ply. They have to be oversized than properly saturated with epoxy than drilled again at the correct diameter. This is to prevent any water from being in contact with the wood inside. The other consideration was strength and flexibility. This is were the oukoume ply structure has another advantage over other types of plywood. One of the major pain in the building process will be to coat and polish every single piece of ply before even starting assembly. I will be trying to get local manpower in Thailand to assist. Will they do it properly? Would I do it better? How to control the quality of the job is my biggest question. |
You got here something wrong. Because I am sure I did not write this.
Here again is some general wood data. ? See table¡ªsome wood data for plywood for boat building. ? Matterial? ? ?Weight? ? Bending moment Elasticity modulus ? Meranti? ? ? ?710 kg/m3 32 N/mm2? ? ? ? 7000 N/mm2 Mahogany? ? ? 650 kg/m3 80 N/mm2? ? ? ? 8300 N/mm2 Okoume? ? ? ? 430 kg/m3 84 N/mm2? ? ? ? 8600 N/mm2 ? The table clearly shows why I prefer Okoume, Gaboon, and Bruinzel plywood (made from Gaboon). The general impregnation of Epoxy adds between 10 and 15 % of the strength for an impact of about 30 %. ? ? |
Thxs for that, everything i researched says bunz' ply with gaboon superior? I can get it from the dist. At a good price per sheet.? On Fri, Dec 22, 2023, 8:14?AM Bernd Kohler <ikarus342000@...> wrote: You got here something wrong. Because I am sure I did not write this. |
Alain, apply the epoxy before building. Use the squeegee method. You put the sheets on top of each other on saw horses and start with the top sheet by pouring some epoxy on, distribute? with squeegee, move sheet slightly so that the extra is moved to the sheet below. The top sheet is then placed to cure and you proceed with the next and so on, a real quick job. Cheers Philip Malan

That is a great?idea. I will be using that system for sure.? On Wed, Jan 3, 2024, 2:51?PM Bernd Kohler <ikarus342000@...> wrote: Thanks, Philip |
Bernd? Can i build this boat like this? Two hulls completed and painted? Not attached? Move the two hulls close to the water.(one hull at a time) ??? I can rent a building location for less $$ INLAND.? i would use a flat bed to move the hulls and the rest of the build equip.? I just want to make sure im not running imto future issues. Water front anything is $$$$ In Florida Thxs? On Wed, Jan 3, 2024, 4:59?AM Philip Malan via <malan.philip=[email protected]> wrote:

Just curious how. The draft and brief overview. For example KD122
May be I am dreaming but .. Perhaps build hulls, install all BH except 3 and 6 (just prepare all for moving), Prepare all for decking, make cabin roof assembly.? Move everything close to the water and glue together :-) PS: I am watching this project for that purpose https://www.facebook.com/groups/Tresoor2/ PPS: Also curious if catamaran would be possible to disassemble back for transportation the same way with a minimal work.? |
Are you going to get your website.fixed? Im hilding off on buying plans until i know im going to get designer support. There is zero good info on the build, what the plans include, ect.. Are the carbon mast plans included? If i buy the plans is the open deck version imcluded along with the closed?? I still havent recived an explaination? On what sail rig and why. You told me sloop... Whats the sailong? differance with the high roach main and the square top? Im an amauter builder....

Hi
I have some problems with the provider. I hope I can clear it shortly.? I have many customers I am working with via email. I do not know which boat you are interested in. The carbon mast plans are a part of the DUO 800 plans. I have no other ones. Because of the boundary layer effect the wind at the top of the sail is more regular and has a higher speed. The square top sail picks up this wind and uses this to power the boat better. The drawback of real square tops is that these cannot be controlled as with a gaff sail, for instance. |
Okay, the boat im planning on buildimg is the 860.? Over the last couple weeks i habe come up with this: Please let me know if my plan stinks. Carbon mast? (your eaay build pvc? design mast)? A soft wing main sail with a carbon top gaff? boomless? (designed by you, a modern version of the Wharram soft wing)? ***keeps.rigging cost low,? less fuss with tracks ect***? Boomless is safe? Self tscking? jib (Code zero light winds (im in Florida)? Spin? Carbon pole for the code and spin'? Again,? Whats included in the 860 plans..... Open deck? Closed deck? A Mast design for the 860? How much, for the extra design work,? the sail, carbon pole for the soft wing ect.. Thxs again? On Sun, Feb 4, 2024, 5:33?AM Bernd Kohler <ikarus342000@...> wrote: Hi |
