Rogé io Couto #10 Alisdair, I tend to use natural minor for the im7 most of the time because it gives me a more relaxed sound and when I want some color I switch to the melodic minor. I don't care that much for the kind of the minor chord the piano player comps as long as it is a "im" I will play like said above. I have found that it's easier to use the dorian mode, because that would then give both the 6 and the b7, ensuring that I can cover whatever another piano player or guitarist comps, m6, m7, m69, m9, m11 etc.
