I was wanting to add a decent thinline semi-hollow to my stable, but I wanted something with a single, florentine cutaway. I think the single cutaway guitars look better then the double-cut "mickey mouse ear" designs. Just an asthetic choice.
I had played a Howard Roberts Fusion III awhile back and an ES-135. I liked both of them. I think I like the pickups on the ES-135 a little better, because they have a different type of sound to them then your typical PAF-ish humbuckers, but they do noise cancel. Variety is a good thing!
So I got a screamin' deal on a 135, and decided to take one of my floating holidays off of work today, to really get to know this instrument. One of the things I'm noticing right away is that the tone of this baby is a little bit different then a typical 335.
It's seems a little bit closer sounding to a fully hollow jazz box. It sounds a little bit more "woody" and a little bit less of that solidbody "glossy" type sound.
I'm thinking it has to do with the center block being balsa wood (which is the same on the HR Fusion III), instead of mahogany they're using for the center block on the ES-137's. Though there are probably other contributing factors.
I've heard some complaints about quality-control with the newer American-made Gibsons, but this one seems to be perfect as far as I can tell.
I am going to have to change the strings that came on this baby some time today & make some adjustments though. They're way too light gauge, especially for the short scale neck. Starting to get on my nerves.

Toby,

...I share in your joy -- recently acquiring a
D'Angelcio and still basking in her beauty and sound
...

....nothing compares to a new ax ... while the world
may think us obsessed .. let them .. they will never
know the joy of a new box ... kind of like a Harem of
hour glass beauties -- only they're made of wood ...

...now you're going have to lock yourself in and play
it on your favorite amp ... get out the pedals and
processors later -- after you've thoroughly given it
once over ... give it a strum for me ....

enjoy, Buddy

For those of you looking for an inexpensive "jazz" guitar, I just
bought a Nouveau 16 from Kraig Phillips (phillipsguitars.com) for $725,
and it smokes! I made a list of desirable qualities (scale length,
fingerboard width, body size, materials, pickup, etc.) and searched
until I found a guitar that met all of my qualifications. I was
prepared to spend up to $4000 (I am a full-time pro, tired of
compromising even with "high-end" guitars, of which I have several),
but the Phillips 16 met all of the qualifications, and I ordered it
sight unseen. It came so perfectly set up that I was able to use it on
a gig the next day, without even changing the strings.

I have owned over 200 guitars in my career, and have played most every
maker's instrument. There are lots of good axes out there, but I think
you have to sit down and draw up a list of what works for you as a
player. I highly recommend checking out the Phillips site.

Anybody know where they're made? Are they Asian imports like the Michael Kelly's?

The website says they're made in Korea.. You aren't going to find any new hollow boxes in that price range that are made domestically.
