New To Jazz With An Interest To Learn

Hello and its great to be here. Since I started listening to
a "Smooth Jazz Station" which broadcaster in a near by city, I would
like to learn to play jazz.

Presently I strum out chords in a small praise & worship group that
I belong to. I own a Jay Turser Strat copy, a Squire Custom Tele
with 2 humbuckers. My favorite is my Washburn HB-30 jazz guitar. I
have 2 amps. A Peavey Envoy 110 solid state 40 watt and a VOX
AD30VT valvetronics 30 watt (tube hybrid).

I know this is a loaded question, but where do I start? I would
think it would be with what I would call jazz chords. From what I
know jazz chords are 7ths, Dominate 7ths, Minor 7ths and many more
that are not used in rock, country or blues.

I have a little bit of chord theory so would need a good reference
point to start learning this theory.

I own BITB 2004, but have little experience using it. From what I
gather, I can use BITB as a backing track with drums, bass and other
instruments. I would like to learn how to use this as a tool.

I appreciate any help this group can provide. From what I have read
on the many threads in this forum, there are a lot of experienced
and helpful people on this forum.

I understand this may be a long process. I am anticipating
retirement in the next year or two. This will keep me busy and out
of trouble.

Thanks.

Tim
