Hi there,

There are quite a few $100+ multi fx out there actually. You could try the Zoom 505, 1010, or the Korg AX1G. I dunno if the Boss ME-6 is still available. The Boss ME-8 is also a good buy, if you have a little more money. I'm sure even Digitech, or even Ibanez have a few processors in that price range. Thats all I know for now,

I play jazz and fussion most of the time. Before i
started to play
fussion I didn't use effects at all. A mellow tone come
out from my
epiphone specail neck position pickup will do all the
job. But since I
started to imitate John Scofield and few other great Jazz-Rock/ Fussion
player, I feel the need to purchse a effects machine. I don't like to
buy few pedal because i don't use them most of the time. I just need a
multi effects machine that budget not more than $100 to sound like
Scofield(as example).
According to your long playing experience, can recommend some model? If
I can't do anything within $100 then hopefully $150 will do.

[jazzguitar] SG advice wanted

Robert Valentine

I'm playing a sort of modernish jazz style, (Frisell,
Goodrick, Rosenwinkel) and am currently playing
a 335 type guitar.

I'm beginning to consider an SG for a future guitar and
I'm interested in what people have to say about its acoustic
tone versus say, Les Pauls and 335s or other solidbodys
with maple tops. Also, which models had ebony
fingerboards, whether the tune-a-matic bridges with
thick posts sound different than those with thin posts, plastic
versus metal saddles, etc...

I assume I'll gut the electronics so pickup
recomendations would be welcome, (I need piano-like
chord tones, but the harmonics should start jumping when
I get bluesy. I'll probably go with three pickups to get
the strat "in between positions" tones, I don't care whether
I have to have it cut).

Of course, better years would be nice to know about as
well as opinions about Guild SG-like models and Epiphones.

Thanks a lot,

Bob Valentine

[jazzguitar] Tritone goodie from TBL

This was sent to the Bottom Line digest. Some may
find it interesting.

Subject: ii V I exercises
Try some fun stuff like:

|Abm7 / Db9#11 / |Cmaj7 / / / |

which is the tritone sub for G7 with it's respective
II. Notice how nicely the #11 of the Db common tones
with the 5 of the Cmaj7. If you wanted something a bit
more in the harmonic pocket then go for full
alterations onthe upper extensions of the Db7
chord...b9,#11,b13 as this is not sound as strident.
Likewise the b5 on the abm7 would be another option
and might be nice choice as it will create a D to Db
to C line. or

|Dm7 / Db9#11 / |Cmaj7 / / / |

The obvious and yet cool thing about this line is the
half-step descendingbass line with everything staying
nicely together. ie. F of Dm common tones with the F
of Db9 and then moves down to the E of Cmaj7. The C of
Dm moves to B in Db9 then back to C in Cmaj7. So you
still have the Fa Fa Mi and Do Ti - Do lines
that are essential to hearing the ii-V-I movement but
you have some interesting things happening elsewhere.
Again the #11 of Db common tones with the 5 of C.or

|Dm7 Ab79#11 G7 / |Cmaj7 / / / |

This is just using a dominant approach chord into the
G7.There of course many options you can exercise and
probably the most flexibility is in the turnarounds or
intros. I'm not sure what I just mentioned has
anything to do with actually bass playing but I guess
it is important to be able to see several different
options at the same time. As you can see it all a game
of tritone subs and their respective ii chords and
also dominant approach chords. I also guess it is
important to be aware of all the inner lines happening
that you can take advantage of while soloing or
walking in jazz.

Richard

[jazzguitar] Guitar Tech Recommendation

Edward Tootill

Just wanted to recommend a good guitar tech in the
King of Prussia area.

I took my Applause AA10 Voyager travel guitar to
Sam Ash in King of Prussia. The guitar tech there
is Sam Michaels (I think, I'll send a correct name, if
necessary).

He did a perfect job. I'm a middle-age amateur,
with a cheap travel guitar yet he worked on it
like I was a professional about to go out on the
road. No posturing, no attitude. Just a
professional
who loves guitars and basses..

Both times I was there he was working on Gibson
Les Pauls. You know how Les Paul owners are.
Well, really, all of us stringed instruments owners.

I will drop off my Mexi-jazz bass off on Monday.

Ask around to make sure, but this guy is golden.

Ed T.

[jazzguitar] Benny Goodman Solos

Bob Schwartz

A few days ago, somebody on one of the two jazz guitar lists I'm subscribed to
asked about the availability of transcribed Benny Goodman solos to use for
practice purposes. Since I don't remember which list it was, I'm posting this to
both lists. I apologize to the list that wasn't the one where the inquiry was
made. Anyway, I have a book of 30 transcribed Goodman solos. It's the Benny
Goodman volume of the Jazz Masters series of books. I got it many years ago (the
price printed on the cover says $5.95!), and I don't know if it's still in
print, but at the time I bought it it was published by Consolidated Music
Publishers, 33 West 60th Street, New York, NY 10023. BTW, other books in the
series include Monk, Bird, Django and Charlie Christian.

I live in the same town as Eric Johnson (Austin, TX) and he is a casual
friend. His obsession with his music and the gear he uses has created
many legends, especially here, where we have been hearing him play live
for 25 years. About 8 years ago I played in a band that opened for him
at the city colosseum. His soundcheck took five hours, for a show that
lasted maybe 1 1/2 hours. There are stories of him setting up camp in a
rehearsal studio for days at a time, barely sleeping or eating. Every
piece of gear that he uses is handpicked and must be a just so - cables,
strings, picks, amps, pedals, and yes, even batteries. He has some
instructional videos out where he talks about his gear and his playing
techniques. The first one is called "Total Electric Guitar." It's worth
it if you're seriously trying to crack his style.

Oh, and BTW, back in the '70's Eric used to play at the jazz jam
sessions quite regularly. He likes and has been influenced by jazz
guitarists, mostly Wes Montgomery, and he loves Pat Metheny. He likes my
playing well enough that he wrote some liner notes for my CD, which you
can read at

I've always wanted to know how Pat Metheny gets his sound, especially as heard on the 'Road to You' album.

I dunno if he qualifies as a 'jazz' guitarist, but Eric Johnson also has an incredible tone. How does he do it? This is hearsay, but it is said that Eric could tell you if you were using normal or alkaline batteries in your pedals!! Is this possible?

Hi guys,

I wish to know how to get John Scofield's type of harsh-distorted sound.
what effects did he use?

[jazzguitar] Re: jazzguitar digest

I know it's the chorus and distortion but, beyond
signature, why go for an out of tune sound? I
actually like his playing, especially as a sideman.
His lines and soloing are very creative; but
that sound. It's not as pronounced when he
plays on other musician's CDs. It is his sound and
it is his signature. It was just a question and
comment, not a criticism.

Joe DiOrio has a great sound.

The answer is quite simple. That is his
"signature" > sound- coming from
the chorus effect he uses (rat distortion and stero
chorus pedal=a bit
out of phase with an edgey tone).

Hi

If any one is interested, I have a web site that gives away for "FREE"
about 20 tabs of Lenny's playing. They are 100% accurate, and are
extremely hard to play, but show an insight into the mind of the genius
that Lenny was. Some of the tabs are duets with Chet Atkins, from the
album "Standard Brands"
There is even an original 'chart' that Lenny did for the "Minors Aloud"
session with Buddy Emmons.

Although I play a 7-string with a high "A", the tabs are made for the 6
string.

[jazzguitar] Goodman

Brad Little

Hello,
I have a question that is not exactly guitar, but close. I've been
listening to Benny Goodman on my way to work the last few days, and think
that many of his solos would make good studies for guitar-very melody
oriented and very original. Does anybody on the list know if there are
transcriptions of Goodman solos available, either in print or on the net?

Thanks,
Brad Little
