2024 garden 9
A new garden season is rapidly approaching. We have a lot of new members and it should be a good year. I would like to hold a planning session with all of the gardeners on Tuesday, January 30 at 3pm. We will meet in the Jamestown Friends Meeting building and you can enter through the door under the drive through at the end of the building. We can use this time to set priorities, see what needs we have for the garden and discuss what fees to charge. If you can't make it at that time, please email me at jbsebens@... or call me at 276-318-3808 to share any ideas or concerns that you have. Thanks, Jeff Sebens

2023 Fall gardens
Good afternoon, everyone. Hopefully the heat will abate soon, but it is time to be thinking about fall plantings. Peas, collards, kale, greens, carrots, onions and many more can be successfully planted in the fall. I will set the seed box out in the picnic shelter and you are welcome to sift through it and use anything that is there. Tony is still helping to take care of the weed pile with his chipper but he asks that you be careful not to throw clods of dirt there with the weeds. Also okra, corn, and sunflower stalks are too stringy for the chipper so just put them in the woods behind the compost bins to decay slowly. I sprayed the grass in the walkways with some weedkiller to try and knock it back but it is always helpful if you can weed the walkway around your bed so we do not have to use as much chemical weed killer. This has been a successful garden year and we appreciate all of your hard work. Jeff and Patricia

2023 Garden 14
It still seems strange to write 2023! It will be time to put seeds in the ground before we know it. I am looking forward to a great garden season. I was very preoccupied last season after my mother moved in with us for her last few months but should be able to be more active in the garden this year. I am attaching a diagram of the garden with all the names of the gardeners, including two new names (welcome Wanda and Bill). Please make sure that it looks right to you and I need some information from all of you. 1. Please let me know if you want to retain your garden plot from last year. 2. Please send me a good phone # and email address so I can update contact info 3. Payment for garden plots can be mailed to me or dropped by our house. Checks should be made out to Jamestown Friends Meeting. Mailing address is 124 Village Drive, Jamestown, NC 27282 . Full length plots are $40 and half length plots are $20 My biggest need right now is for some ideas about how we can get a load of compost brought over from High Point recycling center. They sell it very reasonably but we need someone with access to a trailer or truck that can haul it or someone we can hire to deliver it. I would like to get it in the next few weeks so that everyone can be adding it to their garden beds to prep the soil. Any ideas would be welcome. Please let me know of any thoughts you have about what we can do to improve the garden and lets make it even more beautiful this year. Feel free to call me at 276-318-3808 or email me at jbsebens@... Thanks for all your work, Jeff Sebens

2023 Garden - Seeds and classes 2
The Guilford County CVooperative Extension service is hosting a seed exchange this Saturday and I will be going to get seeds for our garden. They are usually fairly standard variesties, but I f you have any specific interests, I will be glad to look for them. Otherwise I will just pick out a good selection and set a time when all of our group can pick through them to se what you like. If you want to start seeds indoors, it is almost that time. The weather looks good this next week for our compost to get delivered. If the rain holds off all week, I may break out the tiller and we can till up any of the garden beds at that time. I will keep you posted. I am also attaching a list of classes that came from the extension office.

Summer gardens 2
It is nice to see all the gardens fuorishing so well! Thank you all for your diligent work. A special thanks to Bill Pleasants who has been busy this week spreading extra wood mulch on the paths! I am afraid I have not been over there much this summer due to some issues in our family. My mother moved near here from Texas earlier this spring and was living independently but she had some health issues and then a major stroke. So she has moved into our home under the care of Hospice and that is keeping me a good bit closer to home. Patricia has been taking care of our garden. Also, Elma Payne was a new gardener this spring. She adopted the long narrow bed along East Fork Rd. They had some issues in their home that got her off to a slow start and now, her husband Gary had quadruple bypass while they were down in Florida and they need to stay down there several more weeks while he recovers. I know she planted some beans early on and if anyone feels inclined to pick any of them, go right ahead. If anyone has any extra produce that you would like to donate, please text me at 276-318-3808. We will put a bin up in the picnic shelter again and if I know there is produce there,Patricia or Wallace will take it to one of the local food missions. Also, I heard reports of a rabbit inside the fence. If anyone happens to see it, maybe you can chase it a little bit and see if you can identify where it is going in and out. We may be able to do something about it then. Thanks for all your work! Jeff

2022 Gardens 7
I am writing this note as I sit in a warm house after just looking at some pretty wintry forecasts for this weekend. Stay safe everyone! First of all, thank you to all of you for your tremendous support in getting the garden fenced in this last year. I think everyone would agree that it made a tremendous difference and the garden was more productive than ever. I had hoped to get the new garden beds built by now but some health issues, travel, etc have pushed it back. I did buy one load of timbers and will get another load tomorrow. My plan is to start the actual construction of the new beds either late next week or else the week after, depending on weather. As the timing become clear I will let you all know. I do have two items that I would appreciate a response on. 1. Please let me know if you want to continue to use your garden plot in 2022. If anyone decides not to continue, there are always people asking for spaces. If you do want to continue ( and I hope all of you do!), please mail a check to me at Jeff Sebens, 124 Village Drive, Jamestown, 27282. The cost will still be $40 for a full bed and $20 for half. This year I will use the funds to get a load of topsoil/compost dumped by the garden so that everyone can supplement their plots. I will also use the funds to cover the cost of building the new garden beds. 2. The Guilfor County extension service is offering free seeds to all community gardens. They have large amounts of seeds that have been donated to them from local businesses. In the past, they had a seed fair where I could go and pick them up, but now in covid times, they are asking that all the garden organizers send in a request for what they would like and they will do their best to supply what is requested. So please send me a list of any seeds you would like and I will compile a list for our garden. I need to submit that by the end of next week! I am already getting eager for a new garden season and I hope to see you all soon. Jeff

Compost 2
Tony has been working to get our composting system functioning again. Please put any old produce in Bin #2 and continue to put all dead stalks, vines and weeds outside of Bin #1. Thanks!

Sharing produce 6
Everyone’s gardens are looking great! I know produce is starting to come in and there is interest in sharing with folks who are less fortunate. We have a connection with the Open Door Shelter in High Point and they have said they would welcome food donations to share with their clients. Ww will place a box in the picnic shelter Friday noght or Saturday morning and then we will deliver it Saturday around lunch time. If you have produce to share, please wash it and handle it as little as possible before placing it in the box. We will try to do at least two delivery days a week and keep you posted about the schedule. I also submitted an application to NC A&T community garden program. They are offering some funds to local community gardens to help provide more access. I am not sure how likely we are to be chosen but it is a good connection to get started. If we do not receive the funding, I still hope to be able to buy the supplies to finish the new beds late this summer so we can be sure to have them ready for next season. Keep up the good work and I will see you in the garden.

Fence progress 7
We had a great day of work today after Tony brought in a friend with a tractor and auger. Post holes done in an hour. We got all the posts set and most of the top band done. Thank you Chris, Bob, Patricia, and Tony! I will go over to the garden tomorrow (Wednesday) about 3:30 in the afternoon to finish the top band. If two or three people can help hold and measure it should go pretty quick. On Thursday, we will start to put the fence up on the posts starting at 10am. A few folks with hammers to drive tacks to hold the fence up would be useful then. It is a big change already and I think will make for lots of successful gardens. -- Jeff Sebens 276-318-3808

Fencing project
Sorry for the late notice, but we will be setting all of the posts at the garden tomorrow (Tuesday) starting around 9. We will probably be working well into the afternoon. This day is pretty heavy work. We will be setting and tampong big posts. If you want to help with that kind of work, we would welcome the extra hands. If that kind of work is hard for any reason, you are welcome to stop by and cheer us on. There will be other workdays soon where we will be moving mulch and making beds, so things will be changing!

2021 Garden plans 4
Happy new year to you all and I hope you are all safe and well. Patricia and I are both doing well and being as careful as we can in these crazy times. Hopefully, we can return to something more like normal before too long. It seemed like everyone had a productive year in their gardens and I enjoyed getting to know you all a bit better. I also want to give a special thanks to Tony for his work on the garden edging and bringing over his grinder to help get control of the compost pile. I have been talking with folks at the Friends Meeting and they are open to the idea of fencing the garden to keep the deer out. It would also make it look significantly better than what it does now with all of our individual protective structures. I looked at the fence at Jamestown Presbyterian and they are very pleased with it. It is a 7’-8’ structure with wire mesh. I have a lot of surplus fencing material and I priced what it would take to buy the timbers for posts and rails. we are looking at about $1500 to fence the garden. This would also be expanding it by one bed on each end since I have had several requests from folks who would like to rent one. The Friends Meeting would probably help with some funds but they can not carry the whole cost. I was hoping that we could raise most of that amount among the current gardeners since it would make our gardening much easier and more productive. I would appreciate it if each of you would email back to confirm if you plan to rent your same garden bed this year and also if you would be willing to donate to the fence project (and if so, what your contribution would be). If we can get sufficient funds, I would like to try to build the fence in early March so that our gardens can get off to a good start. Please let me know your thoughts on this plan as soon as you can. It probably does not make sense right now for us to gather together as a group like we did last year, but maybe when things ease up we can get together later in the year. Thanks for your support and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Be Mindful with your cars!
With the ground thoroughly saturated, please be sure to keep your car either in the parking area or on the gravel access road off East Fork. We do not want to leave ruts in the lawn! Also, Tony and I did some work on the compost area yesterday and he brought over a shredder that we will use to break down any vegetation. As you weed your garden or pull out plants, just leave them in a pile by the shredder. As they dry out a bit we will run them through the shredder and start moving them through the bins to build new compost for the beds. Thanks for your cooperation and the gardens are looking good!

More tomato plants
I got a notice from a friend at the Baptist Church garden. They have extra cherry tomato plants that they would like to share. Does anyone need any more?

Tomato plants and seeds
I have a lot of tomato plants ready and a box seeds. I will bring them over to the picnic shelter by the garden around lunch time tomorrow and leave them there til Tuesday about lunch time. Please feel free to take what you want. You can care for the tomato plants and put them out as soon as you feel it is safe. Happy gardening!

Garden hose is fixed
We got the leaked fixed in the water supply so you canuse the hose now. Use the lever handle to turn the water on when you need it and off when you are finished. It will be helpful if you always loop the hose up out of the way of the lawn service as well. There is another trailer of mulch, which should get us pretty well caught up. I will work on distributing it this afternoon. I also talked with the construction workers at the bridge project and I think they weill dump a load of wood chips but it may be a month or two before we get those. The tomato plants are growing well and I will bring them over to the carden soon. If you decide you want to plant yours earlier, let me know and you can pick some up from me. These are new times for all of us. Be careful and use the garden for good energy! Jeff Sebens

More Mulch!
Today was the kind of spring day that made everyone want to get out in their gardens! I want to give a shout out to Tony Griswold for all the work he did to add timbers around the border and trench to try to keep some of the runoff out of the garden. Great job! The second load of mulch is here and ready to distribute. If you want to add some to the paths, the wheelbarrow and shovel are up under the picnic shelter. I will also leave a roll of plastic in my garden row near the little fenced enclosure. You might want to bring a scissors or knife to cut it. Please take what you need to add a layer of plastic anywhere it has deteriorated or blown away and then put fresh mulch over it. I have a lot of vegetable seeds from the seed exchange that are free for you to use. It might be easiest if you are interested to come by my house at 124 Village Drive to see what I have. I am getting a LOT of tomato plants started and they will be free for you to use too. You can get them from me at any time, too, and as it gets closer to put them in the ground I will bring them over to the garden. Stay safe and eat lots if fresh veggies!

Mulch is here
The Meeting purchased a trailer load of mulch and it is parked by the garden ready to spread. There is a wheel barrow on the trailer to use. I am still fighting a respiratory infection so I am trying to keep my activity to a minimum. Any gardeners who would like to help distribute the mulch are welcome to put it anywhere on the garden paths. When this trailer is empty we will see if we still need more. We will also still plan to get some topsoil to add in to the beds after the mulch is distributed. I may try to be over at the garden some on Saturday afternoon and do more work trenching above the railroad ties to help divert runoff. See you in the garden soon!

Welcome!
Thanks everyone for responding quickly to the email group. I am traveling for a week, but plan to go to the seed exchange hosted by Guilford Cooperative Extension on Saturday, February 8 from 10-12 at the High Point Library. If anyone else would like to go with me please text me individually at 276-318-3808. I have started talking with the folks in the Quaker Meeting about the garden improvements we talked about and will let you know when we are able to start working on the water problem and the road. I will be planting seedlings in a few weeks! See you in the garden soon, Jeff
