Resupply at Horseshoe Meadows

Planning a NOBO August 2024. ?Planning to start at Kennedy Meadows and finish at Mammoth or Tuolumne Meadows. Ideally would resupply at Horseshoe Meadows and MTR. ?I've not done the Kennedy to Horseshoe stretch before. Does anyone know the rules on leaving a resupply in bear boxes at Horseshoe Meadows? ?Ideally I'd drop a resupply there on way to Kennedy Meadow start and then pick it up a few days later. ?Would be a stretch to go all the way from Kennedy to MTR without a resupply.?

You can leave a resupply as long as you clearly label it with your name and your expected pickup date. I've done this twice at Onion Valley before. Horseshoe Meadows should be no different though.

I did TM to Whitney with only a MTR resupply and had a couple of days worth leftover.? It's doable depending on how much repacking you do of your meals and how much you can cram into your bear can.? I planned on 20 days, with extra and took 19, but going north you may be right that it will be a stretch to MTR.

Yes, you can leave labeled food. And I'm sure you're aware of the water situation from KM to HM at that time of year.?

I did this in 2021 going?NOBO, a very dry year. KM to HM is not a bad stretch, but watch the PCT water report and the notes on Far Out. Water sources are about 11 miles apart and some are hard to find.

As for resupplying at HM. We placed two well-labeled buckets into the bear cans next to each other and one was stolen, my son had to hitch down to Lone Pine to put together a resupply. Because of this if I were to do this again I would simply send myself a box general delivery at the Lone Pine PO and hitch down and back.? But many others have left themselves a box or bucket with no issues. It was very easy for my son to get a ride down and back, many hikers coming and going.

Good luck!

Thx for all the responses - very helpful. ?Yes, was aware of water situation between KM and HM. ?Thinking with all the snow last year, it won't be worst case scenario.?

Adding one more question to this thread regarding requirements between Kennedy Meadows and Horseshoe Meadows. ?Are bear canisters required in this stretch or is Ursack okay? ?I'm having a hard time deciphering what info I find. ?

According to the manufacturer:

It is approved in Inyo NF.? But I would urge you to call the Inyo RS and check in case this has changed for 2024.

Inyo allows use of the Ursack. It is not legal in Yosemite or SEKI.?

This is a pretty good map showing where canisters are required:
