High Sierra Camp Loop - Tuolumne Backpackers Campground

Greetings,

My wife and I are planning to do part of the HSC Loop in September.
Wondering if anyone has heard if the Tuolumne Meadows Backpackers Campground will be re-opened this year ?

Also wondering if Tuolumne Meadows Lodge will re-open. We love to go there before/after our hike, but its been closed since 2019.

thanks
regards
Bill Vannerus

Park will announce when camping
reopens at Tuolumne.? Yosemite "Hospitality" may be taking reservations - and your money -? online, but as in paste few years, will likely cancel in April or May? when they decide there is not enough profit in it.? They will say they have a staff shortage because, yeah, who would want to get paid to be in Tuolumne all summer?

Tuolumne Meadows Campground Closed Until 2025”

Thanks for the feedback Peter.
Yes, We had made reservations for Tuolumne Lodge in 2022, and were canceled with that exact reason. Bummer they can't work out the profitability, we sure love to stay at Tuolumne Lodge, as I know alot of others do too.
Will keep figures crossed for this year!

Thanks for the link Carl.
Upon reading, sounds like they are making alot of improvements to the Tuolumne Meadows campground along with moving the backpackers campsites closer to the JMT TH.

Sounds like there will be big improvements to the Tuolumne Campground. Lots of fond memories there from family camping trips in the 1980s to Tuolumne and the old Tenaya Lake campground which closed sometime in the 1990s. One of the first Sierra Nevada hikes I remember was Elizabeth Lake. It seemed very far as a kid.

Of coure they can work out the profitability.? That is all they do.? The just cut the lower profitabilty enterprises. That's why the shuttle busses, which they have a minimum obligation on, are so far below any reasonable standard of service. ?? I am absolutely sure any reasoable operator could make an acceptable profit on.? But, as the host at the Mountain House once pointed out to me :these people run prisons: what do you expect?

The National Parks Service is planning to terminate its contract with Aramark, the company that manages lodging, food and other services at Crater Lake under the name Crater Lake Hospitality. The announcement comes after the company received the lowest possible annual rating from the park service last year
The Yosemite park services are similarly supplied by an Aramark subsidiary. ?Complaints may garner more attention this year

It will be interesting to see what they mean by "The JMT trailhead" "within the campground".? There has never been anything much like a trailhead anywhere near the campground.? Maybe the end of the old Loop A road where there is a connector path to the Wilderness signage and the junction just south of Twin Bridges??

I hear you. I also have some great memories camping there as a kid, and some bear stories to tell ... LoL ... It was great to come back later as an adult and camp there again and also do some backpacking in the surrounding area, HSC Loop.

Thats such a bummer and a disappointment how poor they manage things!!? Loved going to Tuolumne Meadows Lodge.
Can only pray Yosemite National Park boots them out and replaces them with a better hospitality company.

Thanks for sharing Tom.? What is the best method to voice or register a complaint with Yosemite Park Services with regards to Aramark ?

In the past I sent an email to the park superintendent and eventualy got a reasonable reply. ?It looks like the current pathway is through a generic email on the website under contact us. ? I reccomend brief specific examples with actionable comments. ?E.g. ?failure to maintain shuttle services as contracted etc…. ?General complaints are easily ignored. ? I suspect Inga has the best information on how best to contact the agencies. ?It might be useful to read the Crater Lake complaints which seemed very bad.

"failure to maintain shuttle services as contracted etc…."

Aramark is required to operate the Valley Shuttle as part of their contract, however it is optional for them to operate the YV-TM Hikers Bus and the Tioga Pass Road Trailhead shuttle.

I've been pushing YARTS to change the timing of their first YV-ML bus of the day so it could be utilized as a replacement for the YV-TM Hikers Bus and provide improved connectivity to the ESTA 395 southbound from Reno.

I would be extremely disappointed to learn that the level of service of any of the shuttles since Aramark took over has been "as contracted".

Thank you Inga!
