any word on San Joaquin bridge replacement?

Any word on if/when s. fork of Sn. Joaquin bridge will be replaced?? Any changes in recommended alt route after a year of pct/jmt hikers??

Thanks

Judy McGuire

We've heard that the park service is planning to start work on the bridge this summer but I would not plan on being able to walk across it this summer. Make plans to detour and if we're surprised by an early opening, that'll be a bonus.?

Many thanks to the members of this group who generously share insights and advice, especially about current challenges on the trail. I’ve been following since the Yahoo days and learn something new every year.?

I’m planning another SOBO hike in late August and am looking for resources and info on detours for the (former) SFSJ bridge. I’m aware of Andrew Skurka’s over-the-top option, which will likely be my primary plan because I prefer not to exit to the east and reenter. Specifically, I’m looking for information on possible fording options. I’ve found a promising vid by a PCTer and a couple of Reddit threads but they’re more anecdotal than analytical. I also reviewed this group’s consensus thread from last year. This issue is presumably a topic of interest for many so I’m hoping someone can point me to additional resources.?

I also appreciate this group’s focus on safety and recognize the importance of skills and experience. I’ve done the trail three-and-a-half times and served in a special operations unit in the Army, so my risk tolerance might not match others’. Weather and other trail conditions will obviously be important factors but if fording might be an option I would like to learn more about it. Thanks in advance.?

For your date, a no sweat ford within a couple hundred yards of the bridge site would be my plan a.? My plan B would be the Hell-for-Sure pass route, just because of its historic connection and the description of the high traverse XC route above the S San J into Florence Lake.

I crossed alone the first week of September last year. ?I crossed right below the CCC camp where workers were dismantling the old bridge and it was thigh high. I’m 5’-5”. After I crossed, I watched another person cross about 200 feet farther downstream than I did and it was knee high for them. ? I think you’ll be golden this year at the end of August. ?Have fun!

I also plan on fording the river if possible.? In?Far Out there are several comments at SOBO mm 111.7 indicating that hikers were crossing about 0.1 miles north of where the bridge was.? Also, a cairn was built to mark the spot.? Not sure if the cairn would have survived the winter, but I'm guessing there will be one again by mid to late August.
