Getting back to civilization from Muir Trail Ranch

Thinking of doing a half-ish JMT this year ending at JMT.? Is there a relatively easy way to get back to civilization from there??

Thanks

Judy McGuire

Correction.? Is there an easy way to get out of Muir Trail Ranch.?

Do you meant MTR or VVR? Those are about the half way points.

There is road access from Florence Lake near MTR and at VVR on Edison Lake (both moderately off-trail) but there is no easily arranged transport down to eg Shaver Lake or Fresno there AFAIK. I visit that area annually but have never noticed anything like YARTs.

The east side exits especially to Mammoth and Bishop are easier to arrange rides from to eg the Bishop airport and busses.

Jim Clement? ran a shuttle to/from VVR and Florence Lake last year. I haven't used it but here's the link from last year.

I'm hoping to go south from VVR in late August. I did the first half in 2022 and got a shuttle out from VVR with Jim's team which was excellent.?

I'm hoping to get a shuttle into VVR from him again this year.

There is a shuttle from both VVR and Florence lake/MTR, the former owner of VVR operates it, info is on the VVR webpage or you can call Jim directly at 619 709 1382.

I hate that road from Florence lake so much that I’d recommend going another (wild guess) 25 miles (total) to Paiute pass and exit at north lake. You can hitch from there or arrange to have Paul pick you up.?
Then you have the eastern Sierra transport options.?

There use to be a daily shuttle from VVR and Florence Lake to and from Fresno. One Year parked a car at Florence Lake and one at Yosemite. ?It worked out great for completing 1/2 the JMT.?

It was running as late as last year. ?I stayed at VVR for Labor Day with my family. Took that road down to VVR. It was “interesting”.

TIL the old owners ran a shuttle! If it was running last year I think that's the new owners?

Re: the road yeah it's an adventure. But we've been going with folks up there forever and never had troubles though I did get a low tire filled at VVR a couple years ago...

I always tell people going in or out there or even doing zero days at VVR,

Mono Hot Springs is one of my favorite places. If you can hitch a ride down for a day when zeroing it is amazing. The restaurant at the resort is good.

Excitement last year was the high water which flooded out the campground and washed away the log used to cross the river to the springs, requiring a detour up and over the bridge to access them. Hoping a new log washes down this year... :)

Just to clarify, the old owner (Jim) operates the Fresno - VVR - MTR/Florence lake shuttle. Bringing hikers up and down the mountain.?
The new owners at VVR continue to shuttle the hikers to and from the Bear Creek cutoff trail and Bear Ridge trails.
Two different services/routes…. Jim is contact to get up or down the Mtn.
VVR store is contact to get to and from a trail head.

We?walked over to the road, stuck out our thumbs, and found a ride in less than 5 minutes. A teenager- cost me one fast- food meal and he?was an interesting kid at that.?

After an unplanned bailout at Florence Lake in early June 2015, I road walked from Florence Lake to the junction of the road that goes toward VVR and then stuck out my thumb and got a ride in about 30 minutes or so. They took me all the way to Fresno. I might have been lucky. There were very few cars at that time and I'm not sure how easy it normally is. In general, I've been very lucky hitchhiking in the Sierra Nevada, although that was my only west-side hitch. I have, and prefer, scheduled shuttles from the west side due to the distance involved. I think hitching from the mountains to the west side cities is probably a lot easier than the other way around, like trying to stick out a thumb somewhere in Fresno hoping to get to VVR ... doubt that would work very well. ?In contrast, you can easily hitch from the east side town up into the mountains because they are closer and everyone knows you're a hiker rather than homeless, which I think would be the assumption if you try hitching out of Fresno.

Sorry but I just assumed (incorrectly) that everyone knows about Paul Fretheim and?East Side Sierra Shuttle.??
I have personally used his services and recommend him!

Yes, Jim, this is how we (Jim and VVR) assist hikers in the western Sierra. Contact information for both can be found at VVR.PLACE.

To each his own! LOL I LOVE Kaiser Pass Road.? But I have a Subaru too.? Suspension makes all the difference.? Kaiser Pass is what keeps the riff raff out and makes Edison/VVR and Florence/MTR special.

Based on responses, I find that (in season) there is a ferry across Florence Lake (out of season there's a 4+ mile walk around lake, presumably on a trail?) and a shuttle driver who can pick you up at the far end and take you to Fresno.? But how about getting from MTR to Florence Lake?? I'm assuming there's a trail, mule trail, or road (or combination thereof) from MTR down to Florence Lake but nobody mentioned that.? Is that correct?? Is it easy to follow?? Based on various internet sources I'm guessing it's 5 miles or so ... correct??

It is an easy hike to Florence Lake from MTR, mostly easy downhill. It seemed like about a 2 hour hike.?
