Grace Eileen Miller (1923-2023)
Grace Eileen (McCollom) Miller, age 99, passed away peacefully after a happy, much-loved, and productive life. She died on February 9, 2023, in Cedar City, Utah. She was born in Colo, Iowa, on September 1, 1923, to Forrest and Eunice (Webb) McCollom. She grew up on a farm with her three siblings Mary, Ruth, and John. She graduated from Colo High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. While there she fell in live with her eventual husband, Harold. She noted of him in her writings, "We were in Spanish class and band together. I became aware of him sneaking my notebook of Spanish translations from beneath my desk. That later transferred into library dates and coke dates." Mom wrote: " Once World War Two started I did as most girls did and quit college and was married." After the war, they raised their four boys in Nevada, Iowa. She is well-remembered as the Nevada School District's School Board Secretary, as well as a well-loved Cub Scout Den Mother to her sons and their many classmates. She once wrote, "I enjoy reading, exercising, bird watching, sewing, sewing, travel, photography, my organizations, and, above all, my family and friends - and I carry on a love/hate relationship with my computer." She really loved planning trips and the adventures that followed. A period of genealogical research led to a much extended family tree and membership in The Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a lifelong Christian. After retirement, a decision was reached to " leave (central Iowa's) rigorous climate and join our friends in Arizona." Grace lived on in Sun City West after Harold passed (1997) until 2005 when she moved to the Las Vegas area to be closer to sons Paul and John. Her much-valued membership in PEO began during her time in Nevada and was strengthened while she was in the Las Vegas area. Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Harold Lewis Miller; her son Paul (Carla); and her second husband, Dale Collings. She is survived by her three sons: Dennis (Sonia), Mark (Sandra), and John (Michelle); eight grandchildren Chris, Carlea, Jessica, David, Dana, Sarah, Nick, and Luisa; two great-granddaughters, four great-grandsons, and one great-great grandson. The move to Cedar City, Utah, came after the death of Dale Collings. This move was accomplished so she could be out of Iowa's winter and close to her son John and his wife, Michelle, both of whom have been sources of tremendous support to her in her last years of life. It is important and appropriate to express our heartfelt appreciation of the Staff, Visiting Angels, and hospice team who lovingly cared for our much beloved Grace at the assisted living facility, Our House, Inc. We want to include a particular note of appreciation to Mandy Hatch, RN, for her help during the hospice period of her life. An inurnment service will be held at some, as yet undetermined, time at the Hauser Cemetery near Union, Iowa. The family asks that memorials be selected as people see fit. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/grace-miller-obituary?id=45998206

Kathleen was born on a farm outside of Colo, Iowa on December 18, 1932 to Leo and Catherine (Coleman) Schwickerath. She met Don Sullivan through Job Service in Charles City and worked for him for a couple of years before they married on April 1, 1967 and had a loving relationship for forty-three years. Her greatest joys were going to church, being with family, cooking and baking for her children and grandchildren, playing 500 & euchre, reading, serving as President/Co-President of the St. Francis Circle, and participating in many bible studies. Kathleen worked full-time as an incredibly dedicated Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and prayer warrior. God and family ALWAYS came first – she dedicated her life to serving others and was a living testimony of God’s love, grace, and strength. Her husband often called her his “angel on Earth” – and she truly was. She left life to be with her heavenly family, including her husband, Donald who passed away in 2010; her parents, Leo and Catherine Schwickerath; her in-laws, Peter and Gertrude Sullivan; her brothers, Francis and Merle Schwickerath; her sister, Marianne Mashek; her brothers-in-law, Don Mashek, Mike Carlin, Lee Sullivan, and Joe Weiland; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Nowicki, Lorraine Potter, and Pauline Guzick. Those remaining to cherish her memory are her four exceedingly blessed children, Carolyn (Jeff) Henry of Cedar Rapids, Mary (Jerry) Meyer of Seward, NE, David Sullivan of Cedar Rapids, and Kathy (Tim) Peterson of Alta. Her nine grandchildren will miss her, Kalese (John), Kestrel (Matthew), Jacob, Joshua (Janelle), Meghan, Henry (Vanessa), Oliver, Nora, and Elsie, as well as her great-granddaughters, Aliya and Eden. Also left to remember her are her brother, Donnie (Donna) Schwickerath, her sister, Dorothy Carlin, and her sister-in-law, Karen Schwickerath. She had a host of extended family, which included the Bakkens and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends – including her lifelong best friend and classmate, Luella Junko. To God be the glory for your life, Mom, which was filled with love, compassion, hard work, and sacrifice for us. We love you the most! Betty Moore (1930-2021)
Betty Moore February 17, 1930 - October 2, 2021 Betty Moore, formerly from Oskaloosa, died October 2, 2021, at MorningStar Assisted Living in Glendale, AZ, with her son Steve by her side. Betty was born on February 17, 1930, in Ottumwa, IA to Warren and Christine (Messerschmitt) Hild. She grew up on a farm in southeast Iowa and learned hard work at a very young age. Her early morning chores, before school each day, included cleaning the milk cans after her brother milked the cows. She had a deep love for horses, riding her horse Birdie to and from school each day, and helping her dad raise and show Quarter Horses. She was an all-state forward basketball player in high school and even received scholarship offers to play in college. However, she elected to become a teacher and graduated from the Iowa State Teacher's College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1950. On March 10, 1951, she married Robert (Bob) L. Moore at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They both started their teaching careers in Colo, Iowa. Back then, being married teachers in the same school meant taking pay cuts. So, to save a few bucks, they kept their marriage a secret and lived in separate apartments 5 miles away from each other (Bob walked those 5 miles down railroad tracks, back and forth each night/morning, to be with her, even during those cold Iowa winters). They settled in Oskaloosa in 1962 and made it their home until 1997. They then moved to Arizona to be near their son Steve and his family. While in Osky, Betty taught remedial reading to elementary school children for over 30 years. Given the many grade schools at the time, they converted an old yellow school bus to a mobile library/classroom so she could rotate teaching at each school. She was also very involved in P.E.O., and Presbyterian and First Congressional Church activities. Betty's love of cooking/baking, golf, and refinishing furniture kept her busy year-round. Her grandchildren still fondly remember her bringing her legendary home-made noodles over each Sunday for lunch. As an avid golfer, she was the ladies club champion several times at Elmhurst Country Club. Unfortunately, a second stroke in 2013 severely limited her activities but never diminished her positive and "tell it like it is" attitude. She spent her final 5+ years in assisted living and was loved dearly by the residents and caregivers....they so enjoyed singing with her each day. She will be affectionately remembered for her incredible toughness, resilience, strong work ethic, humor, and stylish and abundant supply of clothes/shoes/bling. But, most of all, she will be remembered for her fierce, unconditional, and unwavering love of family. We miss her terribly but are comforted knowing she is reunited forever with her beloved daughter and husband.
