How to install on an iMac?

 

I've spent the better part of the afternoon trying to get the most recent (2020) release of HamPC to boot from a thumb drive on my Intel iMac without success.

I receive a complaint that says something similar to "can't determine boot order", then the text becomes about 1 point tall on my 21 inch screen, and is impossible to make out. ? ?I'm left looking at a black screen with teeny tiny text at the top left part of the screen. ?

I tried cold booting the iMac, and the next time, after receiving the same warning, I saw a few snippets of binary ?(?) code appear, and that was all. ?

Not sure where to go from here, but it looks like the software is not functional for me.

I just got done arguing about doing just this with a Microsoft Surface tablet (I won that arguement) and have a fairly recent Mac laptop sitting around. Unless someone beats me to an answer I will give it a spin tonigt and see if I can get it to at least run live from thr USB key.

For the Surface I had to boot a Clonezilla USB key and then clone the HamPC image from a different USB key to the storage in the Surface. I got it working but think I have found hardware limitations on the Surface.

I don't own an Intel iMac so I have no understanding of what is happening here. I'm guessing you've booted other Linux distributions on your iMac?
