Sphere Inc's HP (and Tektronix) Parts Inventory - tekandhpparts.com
7
As many may remember, Walter Shawlee II passed away September of 2023. Since that time, his wife Susan, and children, have been busying themselves with the task of liquidating much of the electronic goodness that Sphere Research had accumulated. Susan intends to continue to make their collection of slide rules, nixie tubes and various other items available. Additionally, she is continuing in her effort to find homes for the remaining equipment. Please do visit Sphere¡¯s site and help. Sphere¡¯s inventory of Tektronix and HP parts has found a new home with us. We have the beginnings of a website (tekandhpparts.com), with the intention of continuing to make these parts available to the Tek and HP enthusiast community. A bit about us: 1) The goal of the website is to continue to make Sphere¡¯s inventory available to the people like us that enjoy collecting, repairing and making use of these amazing examples of engineering and manufacturing. 2) A secondary goal is to ¡°pay back¡± our retirement account of the funds used to buy the parts. It is truly secondary, and may never happen, but who knows? 3) We are retired, have three children, farm 20 acres of grass hay, tend to cows, sheep, horses and chickens, and have FAR too many hobbies and other responsibilities to have taken on another, but here we are¡. 4) Our website is an amateur work in progress. Please read the home page posts for information on the site and on our progress. Tek items will be posted first, followed by HP and then ¡°other¡± semiconductors and who knows what else. There is much awaiting inventorying, so if you don¡¯t see the part you are interested in, please contact us directly (tom@...) and we will let you know if we have it. Also, items showing zero inventory are just awaiting an accurate count, so please inquire if you need something showing zero inventory. Look for announcements on the homepage as we complete the inventorying and pricing of each group of parts. Please be patient as we get the website, inventory and pricing figured out. Feedback is, as they say, a gift, so please share any constructive advice or suggestions for the site that you may have. The suggestion "You should have your head examined" has already been given! :) We can¡¯t ever hope to duplicate the knowledge that Walter possessed, but will do our best to provide you with the right parts for your project. We look forward to getting to know our new customers, and will work hard to earn your trust. Thank you, Tom and Darla Norman

Looking for service manual/schematic for early E3611A DC Power Supply
5
Hi, I'm currently repairing an early HP branded model E3611A DC Power Supply to give to a friend, but the schematic from the usual online sources is for later models that differ in some parts (notably around the area I am trying to repair....) Does anyone have a copy of the service manual for early HP units they can share? I just need the schematic and parts listing in particular. Thanks! Jared

Question: Is there a correct* way to get an HP T141/855X Spectrum Analyzer to sweep logarithmically? (* as in: HP provided specific instructions/equipment for this)
3
(Bear with me, I¡¯m still learning how to use this platform) I¡¯m primarily interested in obtaining logarithmic sweeps/bode plots while using my 8556A audio frequency plugin and 8570A Storage Normalizer specifically for audio amp, loudspeaker, and crossover characterizations. Its native linear sweep/plotting makes it incredibly difficult to distinguish things at the low end of the frequency range; effectively prohibiting one from gathering useful data from a single 20Hz - 20KHz pass (I instead have to break up the single measurement into multiple, across smaller ranges¡ a very inconvenient endeavor). Did HP ever publish any sort of instructions or app notes that address this? Did they produce any accessories/equipment specific for this? I understand there were logarithmic converters available for XY plotters, but I¡¯ve yet to get any confirmation as to whether or not they would be best applicable to my specific needs, and/or how they would work in conjunction with the 8570 normalizer. Thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks-

HP3582a problem no chanel 2
4
Hello, I recently purchased an HP3582A, and I'm encountering a problem with channel B. It's constantly in overload and always displays a saturated spectral line, even with nothing connected. Channel A seems to be working fine. To diagnose the issue, I swapped the cards for channels A and B, and I found that both cards function correctly, but only when plugged into slot channel A. I also swapped 4 digital filter components , but the problem persists. Is there anyone who could guide my investigation? Thanks Patrick

ftp.agilent.com tar-file on archive.org
7
The Internet Archive has what appears to be a snapshot of ftp.agilent.com from 2014. Link is https://archive.org/download/ftp.agilent.com. The file is rather large (317GB) and an attempt to download failed after approximately 220GB. I don't want to blow my monthly data plan and thus decided to wait a little before attempting it again. The Internet Archive allows the download of individual files from the tar-ball, but I'd rather have a replica of the whole site to browse and explore locally. Has anyone successfully downloaded this tar file? Don't want to waste time and bandwidth if the file is known to have issues. Thank you, Wolfgang KI7PFX

Twelve(+/-) bins of original HP/Agilent manuals free for pickup in San Diego
7
I have approximately twelve plastic storage bins (22" x 15" x 12") of test and measurement related manuals that are surplus to my needs. The vast majority of them are HP/Agilent manuals (e.g. scopes, analyzers, generators, and many, many more), and are predominantly operating and service manuals. All are original hardcopy in original binders, and are in very good to excellent condition. There is also some software on 3-1/2" floppy disks. I'd like them to go to someone who can use them, and hopefully make scans and copies of them for the benefit of all. I do not want to have to pack them and mail them, so I'd very much prefer that they be picked up here in San Diego. I'm also willing to drive a reasonable distance to meet whoever wants to take them all. Any interest? Thanks, Stan

HP E6380A - 8935 Frequency range
A question on the HP E6380A - 8935 test set. Does that test set allow you to test 1.2 GHz analog FM equipment? The set mentions the range from 1.7 to 2.0 GHz and then 400 kHz to 1 GHz from what I read. So is there some kind of gap where say you cannot test a radio for TX/RX at 1288 MHz? Thanks - Sig

Several problems with Agilent 54810
15
Hello, I am asking you to move forward on several issues. First this oscilloscope did not start at all. I found the failure by dismounting the main acquisition board which had a capacitor on the burnt-out, short-cuircuit -12v. Now power supply OK, it starts. All voltages controlled. Good! Of course on 2nd failure, the disc is completely mechanically out of order. To be see later so disconnected at this time. Now on the outside screen, i have the bios and its errors. I have the impression that the retro lighting does not work (in theory powered by 12v and give HT.) LCD screen black. I don¡¯t think there is a feature that starts the retro backlight later. Can you confirm that it simply starts basicly when power on. As, there is no keyboard, I wanted to plug one.It ¡¯s a 5-pin din on an Atlas 757 PCI3 board. So I adapted the cable of a PS2 keyboard (cut + welded a din). It initializes (flash of the 3 leds at power on) but after impossible to communicate. So is the keyboard accounting AT or XT, it¡¯s not the same protocol ? Somebody have made the test? So for that i am blocked for the bios Thanks for your answers cdt

HP-8903A Audio analyzer - Un-stable output below 0.5865V (3-relay OSC Board)
2
Hello All, Need help on HP-8903A, it took more than 2 years fighting, 1.it came with an ERR=18 after checked, -15V rail had bad regulator A11U2 and shorted filter cap C02, an easy fix. 2 after few days playing, system suddenly did not respond to keyboard. found A8 CPU board , the most CPU pins were black and rusted, easily crashed when touch, by soldering IC directly to another CPU socket with fly wires. then seat back to original socket, it run perfectly again. 3. another few days running testing with GPIB program, thank you very much for great work from Mr. Pete Millett. Software did control the measurement and actions, however the voltage reading something wrong, (not taking notes clearly for this issue) through the block diagram, the RMS voltage measurement related with A4 board, follow troubleshooting sheet A4 1-3, confirmed no DC checked on A4TP1, A4U5 was suspicious. Replaced with a new LM301AH, it run good again. 4.few days later, the THD reading getting high just after power On, after 20mins warm up, the THD reading back to normal. after long chasing/measurement on board, and took one lead out to measure film caps. finally found out C45 3uf/100V reading is good, but leaking. New film cap was replaced, it read quick again. Rainy day always after sunny days.. 5.One more issue recognized, when OSC. output lower then 0.5865V, the voltage reading and THD was not stable, up/down slowly. it took long time verify this issue, Since not every time encountered, but says > 70% happened. I can't locate the issue either from Osc. board A6 nor Atten. Board A5, Until I got second unit in very reasonable low price, luckily, A6 Atten. board was confirmed defective board, after several swapping tests. 6. issue is my A6 board is "3 relay" version, can't find matched schematics/troubleshooting yet. the A6 board marked "08903-60105 / A-2242-10", Would someone could instruct where to have it. A6 board from second unit is "2 relay" version matched the service manual. almost last mile to go, any hints would be super appreciated! Chen-shen

Weird HP 11880A N-Adapters
3
Hello HP fans, I was tinkering with my HP 85024A and some unexpected measurements made me to question my setup. Short to the point : I use a HP11880A N Adapter to link my probe to a N socket, and the reading is around -5dB from what I expected. The measured levels are perfect without the adapter. It appears that my HP11880A N Adapter exhibit a 50¦¸ DC resistance to ground. In the 85024A Technical Overview 5968-2101E, page 4 told us 1M¦¸/0dB ; suggesting that the adapter should be a simple coax line without any DC resistance to ground. I checked the same adapter in the box of my HP 41800A probe and, guess what, the 11880A adapter also exhibits 50¦¸ to ground. I feel like missing something big... Might someone of you folks enlighten this debate ? Best Regards, Fran?ois / F4HTX
