Which HP spectrum analzyer is structurally most similar to that of HP 8565A?

Amos Ku

Hi all,

I am new to the group. Just wonder which HP spectrum analyzer(s) is(are) structurally most similar to HP 8565A?

Please advise.

Amos Ku

The HP 8569A and B are almost identical. The 8569 has digitized video instead of the storage CRT that is in the 8565. I have and use both in my lab. They were both made during the same era, and are still very usable.

Stuart,

Thank you. That is good news. HP8569 has complete schematics in service manual while HP8565A does not. Also, I can replace the CRT with the digital video.

Dave,

I am looking for circuits related to YTO, YTF, RF section and connections between the motherboard and the display section.

To make it clear, I bought a broken HP8565A from ebay (very similar to this one: ) Please also see the attached photo.

As you can see there is a section of circuitry get ripped out by one of previous owners. I am trying to piece up the information to find replacement parts.

My starting point was looking at the service/operation manual, but I did not find all of the pieces there. It looks like I will need to take another route.

So you are saying you need the the actual schematics and drawings for
the A31-YTO and A-32 -YTF ?

HP did not consider these as field repairable as such . Their policy was
always for you to buy a replacement assembly if you needed one (now
unobtanium since the 8565A is out of support for over a decade) . Likely
someone cannibalized the 8565A you have for these assemblies. As far as
I know detailed drawings and schematics for these assemblies were never
published to the outside world

I'm pretty sure the the interconnect pinouts from the IF-Display to the
RF section are in the manual but as I vaguely recall not in an obvious
way. Been a while since I had to go digging for those but I do remember
they were not where I would have expected to find them. Looped through
several boards are their way to and from?

Dave,

I do not need the actual schematic of the YTO and YTF, but I do need the connection diagram from the other parts of the spectrum analyzer.

I have worked at the old HP (later Agilent) for three and an half years on HP83650A series of microwave synthesizers and I know how to connect YTOs and YTFs to the unit very well, but I have no idea what are exactly the missing parts without the complete set of schematics.

I also wish to upgrade the display section so that I can connect it to some digital devices...

Amos;

I have an HP 8750A Storage-Normalizer on my 8565A which gives me most of the digital video capabilities of the 8569A. Most of the 8750A devices for sale come with the network analyzer plug-in (goes in the back) rather than the needed spectrum analyzer plug-in. The normalizer plugs into the 8565A without any modifications. It makes that analyzer a more useful device, especially on slow sweeps.

I have complete manuals for both models; if you need something copied, please ask.

In the 1981 HP catalog, the basic 8565A (without options) listed for $19,400. The 8569 was no longer in the catalog.

I have found the pdf manual here:

So, do you mean 8569A and 8750A are just variant of 8565A? That is nice to know.

Just curious, then, which model is a 8565A with GPIB build in....

Dave,

I was using 0865-90014. I did not see Service Sheet #6 there..

I think this online version probably does not have those Service sheets.

Which version of the manual are you using..the YTO and YTF connections
are shown on page 8-31 as part of Service Sheet #6 . My manual number is
08565-90014

?f,
The HP 8569A and B are almost identical. The 8569 has digitized video
instead of the storage CRT that is in the 8565. I have and use both in
my lab. They were both made during the same era, and are still very

I am looking for circuits related to YTO, YTF, RF section and
connections between the motherboard and the display section.

To make it clear, I bought a broken HP8565A from ebay (very
similar to
this one:

Please also see the attached photo.

As you can see there is a section of circuitry get ripped out by one
of previous owners. I am trying to piece up the information to find
replacement parts.

My starting point was looking at the service/operation manual, but I
did not find all of the pieces there. It looks like I will need to
take another route.

What schematics are missing from the 8565A manual?

Stuart,

Thank you. That is good news. HP8569 has complete schematics in
service manual while HP8565A does not. Also, I can replace the CRT
with the digital video.

?fff,
The HP 8569A and B are almost identical. The 8569 has digitized
video
instead of the storage CRT that is in the 8565. I have and use
both in
my lab. They were both made during the same era, and are still
very
usable.

Hi all,

I am new to the group. Just wonder which HP spectrum analyzer(s)
is(are) structurally most similar to HP 8565A?

Please advise.

Hi Amos,
Try this link

My understanding is this: The 8565A was basically squeezing a 10 MHz-22GHz 141 specAn into one small box. It has a YTF in front of the mixer to remove harmonics and noise. It is a completely analog instrument with some early discreet logic for control.
The 8569a/b is basically the same rf section with the analog storage tube replaces with a low speed digital oscilloscope. This is done to allow the slow sweeps to be digitised with the slow ADC technology available at the time, while the higher frequencies required for zero span could bypass this for display on the tube as a cro.
It is not practical to convert an 8565a to and 8569 by replacing the display section. This was accomplished with the 8750 normalizer..
The rf section is slightly different with better dynamic range and noise floor - but not too different.
If the display or tube is shot, you could use the normalizer and a normal oscilloscope. Slow sweeps can be captured woth a pc sound card and there are some projects on the web.

Good luck

Tim

Tim,

My final goal is to turn this spectrum analyzer into something that can digitize the result and output it to a digital format and be printed out or saved as jpeg file.

Your suggestion look promising to me because I can probably redesign the digitizing Video circuit from HP8569 or something in the normalizer and connect HP 8565A to my computer, digital oscilloscope or even iPad to be displayed.

I will have to think about how to design such changes.

Amos

Amos,
That was my idea - but then I acquired an 8566b. I was planning on
using a modern micro to replace the whole digital section. A modern
chip could easily accomplish the slow speed sweeps, but zero span is
still pretty fast. I was also thinking of digitising the 21MHz if with
an SDR . This could give some greater capabilities in signal analysis.
But then the rf section starts to show its defects. The YTO and YTF are
not locked as stable as modern SAs. I may still experiment with a new
YTO lock system one day just for fun.
In the end one has to decide what one needs to use the SA for and then
determine if the extra work is worth it.

Glen,

I came across the LCD replacement kit for HP8565A and some other old HP products with CRT display. Expansive (~$1500!) but seems to be another option too.
