Series 1 & 2 boxes (was Seeking Spring Nuts for Series 1 cabinet)

Well, I was wrong and Robert corrected me. What I thought were System II were System I cases (not series), checked my 1976 Catalog, page 475 . They had no nomenclature for the earlier ones.??

So what is a System III case? I have heard mention of it.

There were smaller instruments like the 200 CD, the 428A clip-on ammeter, 425A DC Microvoltmeter. Othe cases were the 608A-F Sig Gen, 606A/B sig gen, etc.
The series 2 were cases like the 432A power meter and the 8640B sig gen, 8690 sweeper, 141T Spec An, etc. These used the cast aluminum side rails.

Thank you, Jeff, for finding that catalog page.

So the old vacuum-tube instruments like the 428 and 606?are?pre-System, cast side panel?boxes like the 5245 and 740 are?System I, and cabinets with corner rails like the 339A?are System II.

"System III" may be my defective memory. ?Somebody will know.

That’s System II. They have removable handles. System I handles are part of the cast aluminum alloy side panels are are removable only by dropping the instrument from a considerable distance onto the handle. This process is not reversible!

The System II designation refers to the second design of MODULAR case. Not all HPAK instruments use modular cases. Obviously the ones pre-dating? it? can't.
339A and 3456A both use modular cases, the 3546A is System II and the 339A is the original, often called System I. The 5315A is non-modular (plastic case) so neither System I or II while the 5315B is modular, System II.

System I one piece exposed, cast side frames, sheet ot multipart front panel
System II one piece cast front panel frame, side structure hidden under cover panels.

HP sold both original and System II cases along side each other at least into the seventies.

Note that not all original modular cases (System I) had handles cast integrally with the side frames. you can't use absence of handles to determine case type.

The quirk of groups starting a new thread if you reply to an email is very annoying.

Regarding the new thread creation, I was thinking that it was caused by members changing the subject block when replying to an existing thread. Whatever the cause I agree that it is annoying. Hopefully the moderator will solve the issue. The problem seems to be more common on this group than on other IO groups.

?The 339A?is System II. ?Perhaps you are thinking of the 331A through 334A which are System I.

I was LOL, too, although I've never seen those built-in handles broken off!? I can imagine, as my 54504A scope has "feet" built into the aluminum chassis, and some are partially broken off.? It's supposed to be able to rest level on those feet with the screen facing up; that feature doesn't work so well these days...? Oh well.

Actually, I once received a System I instrument with a snapped-off handle. I negotiated “compensation” from the eBay seller, took the side off of the instrument, and went to my friendly local welder. Can you fix this? Sure!?

Dave,
You are correct, I was wrong about the 339A it is System II Doh! My only excuse is I've been doing 12 hours+ work (at home) at the moment. I was probably thinking of the distortion analysers.
