S/N date codes or Serial numbers

Greetings,I understand how the series date code such as 01A2012
operates as exlained in several HP manuals,01= condensed series code,
with the number incremented when a change is made, A= American made,
2012 = 12 week of 1980 (1960 + 20).
However I have not been able to locate how earlier codes
operate such as 601-05378 or 078-04485. Could some one explain how to
break this code? I gave a search for this in previous messages, and
was surprised that no one has queried this before.

Dave,
I too was pondering the mystery of the pre 1960 s/n. Perhaps we are
never meant to know.....
