N9020A
There seems to be a bunch of N9020A's available on the usual auction site mostly from CH and wonder if anyone has any thoughts as to why they've suddenly appeared?
Maybe they've been there all along and I just didnt notice? Anyone ever purchased one? Anyway I've taken a punt and purchased one which seems to have most of the useful stuff installed except RTSA which I'd be very interested to know how to implement. Your thoughts? Regards Stretchy |
开云体育Hi The N9020A`s on ebay from CN are so far a great deal—but if you want a unit with RTSA, ?you will ?not get it from these sellers,as they get them from CN mobile factories. Its a hardware option, and are very expensive. The units they sell are all with option B25—25Mhz BW digital IF-14 bits—very fine for most work. Is this model that much better than the older units like the 8566B?

I'd advise some caution here. It looks like the same ebay seller could be using 6 or 7 different ebay accounts to sell MXA analysers all with the same title and pictures.
Also, the ebay description is misleading from every 'seller'. It could be interpreted that the seller is actually only selling the XP operating system used by the MXA analyser. I'd recommend you ask the seller what they are actually selling. |

It depends on what you want....but the N9020A are part of the X-series known to be a first class series--the units sold at e,,,, are MXA N9020A 506-3.6Ghz option B25.....and some with several options as Noise Figure,,-Phase-Noise,,Demod AM-FM,PM-Display Enhancement(Full sweep spectrogram)...all sorts digital demod------and pre-installed VSA 89600 software with no license(ver.14.02)This software have a inbuilt front-end converter function...and much more.So Peterif you consider this- you can use your HP856x as a front-end if you need to go very high-calibrated.. So yes its at least a very competent SA,... --its one of the best today-----! 开云体育Hi Jeremy I fully understand your point—but after been buying from them some years I have no problem with it---even returned an faulty ?MXA without extra cost…and got a new one. They actually sell well performing MXA`s,not just xp op sys. But You are right-they seem to very be relaxed with pictures of the units they want to sell…. So ask for specific pictures of the goods you want to buy…And multiple accounts?—yes that’s right!dont know exactly why. But bottom end – I still deal with them-no problem for me. Regards Hardy ? 开云体育Yes, take care, for instance if you read the (very) small print much further down on the listing from of the 'other sellers' with the title:1pc for used Keysight N9020A MXA signal 3.6G spectrum analyzer (selling at 1997.14 GBP) It actually says: *?100% Brand New * We apply comprehensive quality check and testing before dispatching * This item could be used to replace touch panel?which is?broken, damaged, cracked or unusable. Bullet point 3 could be a cut'n'paste error of course, but? note the '1pc for' at the start of the title, it does make me wonder if you might end up with just a new touchscreen for your two grand?? Yes Carsten the same items are listed with multiple sellers and understand it looks a bit bogus.
However it looks like mobile phone manufacturers are getting rid of their old test kit to anyonyone and various 3rd parties are selling them on. They've probably got 100's if not 1000's of them. Some seem to have no idea and eventually found a seller via the .com site rather than the .co.uk site with a better price and who was willing to communicate, show pictures of the options etc. The adverts are poor and cut and pasted and do say 'Brand new', XP system etc as the sellers dont know what they are selling. You may be able to get a $1200 one with all the options if you look hard enough. I paid a bit more but as a run a business so it hurts less!! Will report back when it arrives. Regards to all p.s. Oh just to answer the other question re 'Is it any better than a 8566B' Yes, very much so as it's way more than a Swept Spec Ani. |

Them???---it’s a short form for the ebay sellers company-well known in second hand electronics world wide...do you want who I have dealt with? 开云体育Please understand the way they do it over there!! Even simpler things have similar . multiple outlets- at ?ec alliexprex. It seems they do not care as we do do. But I and several others in Canada-UK-Australia,Denmark have received good well packaged MXA``?s from---THEM….-I have receive 4!!! So bogus?? Your choice. Hardy ? If you had a name of a serious seller, it would be a lot easier. Indeed, when you search, there are so many... And most of them only show one photo with no description. So it's impossible to know what options are installed.
On the other hand, I once had the experience of buying a tel N5020A (which I didn't buy), even though it was sold from Korea and had ALL the options installed. Worse still: it went up to 26.5 GHz, whereas according to the serial number (according to my friend at Keysight) it was only a 13.5 GHz model. I was ready to buy it... except that when I asked the seller to provide me with a Keysight verification report with the unit, he told me he couldn't send it to Keysight because all the options and modifications were unofficial. However, the serial number label on the back of the unit did indeed show 526 and all the other options. So you need to know: if this type of device breaks down, it won't be possible to get it repaired by Keysight. |

On the other hand, Keysight repair prices often exceed the price to buy another unit surplus.

The Keysight MXA are interesting spectrum/signal analyzers. I evaluated one about 8 years ago, when it just came out with RTSA option. At the time the firmware that started RTSA mode from sweeping SA mode was a bit weird. If you switched modes, it would default the start/stop/span freq settings and not carry them over from mode to mode. There was a workaround, using some sub menus. I opted to buy a Rohde and Schwarz FSVR7, a 7 GHz SA that had 40 MHz RTSA and would seamlessly switch modes and keep the setting, so you could compare sweeping vs 1024 parallel FFT mode. The FSVR has been very reliable and useful all these years and it is lighter to lift than the M9020A.
Last month I had to buy a new SA for another project at work, and the Keysight N9021B or N9030B are competitive with R&S FSW, their flagship. These all have RSTA options, which I need. I chose 160 MHz RTSA bandwidth that can capture a signal in a few microseconds within that BW. I looked at new and used instruments, as it is difficult to get a new one in less than 2 months right now. I found one instrument from another company that had export controlled RTSA, that would capture high RT bandwidth but could only do it in 15 microseconds. I asked if that option could be removed and the reply was no. I find surprising that the SSB phase noise of the Keysight MXA still are not up to the level of the R&S. You have to buy options to get it close, whereas the R&S comes without options with superior LO. Why does this matter? If you are using a spectrum analyzer to check oscillators, VCOs, or digital signal processors that generate an RF carrier, you want the test equipment to be at least as good as what you are measuring or better. Otherwise you are just measuring your SA's own source performance. R&S now has the FSWP that is specifically improved to be even better. All of these specs below are with the same test conditions, measured with 10 KHz offset for 1 GHz carrier. MXA N9020A?? -113 dBc/Hz MXA? N9021B? -129 dBc/Hz PXA? N9030B?? -129 dBc/Hz , optional DDS LO gives -134 FSW8???? ? ? -136 dBc/Hz FSWP???????? -166 dBc/Hz Everything else was fairly comparable. Another thing to watch for, some of the MXA and the FSVR/FSW are old enough to have Windows 7 embedded. While this is good now, at some point it might become a support problem if you try to put the instrument online. They all seem to have Win10 in current productions. John |
To be fair to the MXA, it is classed as a mid range analyser, and was arguably the best in its class when first introduced. With this in mind, the phase noise performance is quite good for an analyser in this class. Other aspects of its performance nudge it towards the high end class, although the Keysight PXA and especially the Keysight UXA easily outperform the MXA.?
It's a shame the MXA models for sale are limited to 3.6GHz, but even with this limitation the ebay price seems incredibly low for an analyser with this level of performance. |
