massive attachments

This is a mailing list, not some web thingy. At least that's the way *I* access it, my mail program hits the groups.io servers and downloads this stuff...

While DSL was at one time considered "broadband", it's a poor performer compared to what some folks do with cable, etc. Unfortunately this rural location doesn't provide a whole lot of choices.

The point here is that when one of you guys attaches a multi-megabyte file to one of these emails, I get to download it whether I want it or not. Which ties up my connectivity until the download is done.

I don't mind the occasional pictures and such, but those big files are something else!

I'd appreciate it if you guys could simply put such large files where somebody can get at them, and provide a link, for those that want it, rather than forcing those of us who get things this way to download for no immediate benefit.

Hi Roy,

In your subscription to this group, go to Advanced and you will see the maximum attachment size option, below:

¡
Max Attachment Size

?? ?? ?? ?? ? Unlimited ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 0 (no attachments) ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 100KB ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 500KB ?? ?? ?? ?? ? 5MB ? ? ?? ?? ?

Maximum size of attachments sent to you in emails. For attachments larger than this size, links to retrieve them will be provided instead.
¡

You can control the attachments which are sent to you.

Also, you can change Digest or Summary rather than All Messages, which allows you to choose individual messages.

Take care,

Larry

This is exactly the reason why many groups do not allow attachments.

The fact that this entire issue is already neatly solved in groups.io?
No, that is a reason to let the attachments flow.
(Reasonable restraint is good, administratively prohibiting is bad.)

many groups do not allow attachments.
Let¡¯s not be *that* uncle.

Can you configure your e-mail application to leave attachments on the server and only down load them if requested. Most clients have tis setting.

Cheers!

Hi all
I believe in your personal settings you can set an attachment limit to the size of attachment that you reweave
Personally I would prefer all attachments to stop and pictures put into a file with a link to them from the posting

This would also stop multiple attachments each time a mail is replied to that has an attachment
Also in most cases 1 meg is big enough to display the problem

Regards Paul

Groups.io already converts attachments to links. You just have to reject all attachments in your settings on groups.io.

Yes, one can set any limit on attachments, even including a size of zero so you don't get any. i believe that will compress images to a size you set too, although I am unsure of that.?

Personally I would prefer all attachments to stop and pictures put into a file with a link to them from the posting

But most people could not be bothered with that hassle. It is far easier to attach something.?

Yes, that is annoying, but still better than expecting people to? upload to a file area.

Agreed.?

Hi Kuba

I think you misunderstood what I was saying put the picture in the pictures file and then put a link to the pictures file
This should stop multiple copies appearing on the site also
Then they can be deleted later by the person that put them there

These days, with the huge pixel counts on "modern" smartphones, pics do often carry very few information compared to the size of the file.

A great tool is "ImageOptim". Its free. Just drop a pic on it, and its size can be reduced up to a factor of 10 or more, often without visible degradation to the pic.

cheers
Martin
