HP 8702D - What is the latest firmware?

Hello,

I am searching for a few days for the 8702D firmware without any luck.

I saw some CPU boards on eBay showing version 6.14 on the EEPROMs. Does anyone have the firmware files?

Is the Lightwave Analyzer 8702D supporting version 7.x firmware?

Thanks,
Razvan

Hi Razvan

Given that no one has replied, I¡¯ll give you what I know from Memory, as I can¡¯t find my notes regarding the CPU boards in that series of VNA and is based on my knowledge of 8720 conversion that I done which has the same CPU board as the late models 8753.

The early 8753D VNA which I think the 8702D is based on, could only go to Firmware 6.14

There was a CPU board upgrade that took the 8753D to the equivalent of an 8753E, ES, T etc. This firmware is up to 7.74. This upgrade was hardware dependent, and I believe that this wasn¡¯t possible on the very early variants of the 8753D.

I¡¯m not sure that the 8702D is a 100% variant of the 8753D to enable this CPU / firmware. I also thought that I seen some where that someone changed the Firmware of his 8702 to an 8753.?

Again, this is from memory and might not be correct for your 8702D.

Hello James,

Thanks for your reply. I did more reading in the meantime and I also saw this thread you mentioned since I think the 8753D is very similar to 8702D. Interesting is that I cannot find any firmware details about the 8702D but there is still a lot of info about the 8753D.

From my research I guess the CPU board in the 8702D is the following 08702-60009. If I compare the photos that I found on the internet it looks identical with the 08753-60219 which it supports as you said firmware version 6.14

As for the new 7.x firmware I guess it is only possible with the new board.

From what I saw the CPU boards old vs new have the following changes:
- flash memory for the firmware compared to EPROMs
- newer and faster CPU - MC68EC040RC33A (33MHz) vs MC68HC000FN16 (16MHz)

I think both CPU cards can have the CPU upgraded. When the MC68xx CPU is upgraded the TCXO also needs to be replaced. In the old board the TCXO is near the CPU and it has also 16MHz. The fastest MC68HC000 is the 20MHz version and I guess if the TCXO is also replaced with a 20MHz one a small 20% increase in CPU power can be achieved on older units.

The new board that supports the bigger 68K CPU can be upgraded up to 50MHz, this would make it very fast compared to the older ones.

For the moment I didn't receive my 8702D. It will arrive in about 2 weeks. Most probably I will convert it to 8753D with the board that is inside and I will run 6.14 and I will look for a new CPU card to make it faster.

I also ordered the YIG and the VTC Oscillator from a 6GHz source. I want to see if I can upgrade it to 6GHz but I am afraid that I will need other components also for this upgrade.

I will keep updating this thread once I get more details.

Thanks,
Razvan
