HP 8656A A6 board U1 1020-2933 is bad
?I am repairing a HP 8656A that has an A6 board from an HP 8606B in it.
Chip U1 on board A6 has an HP part number of 1820-2933 and the chip is labeled SP8606B. This chip is bad. Question 1. Is SP8606B the correct part number for the HP part number of 1820-2933? Question 2. I have searched for the? SP8606B chip and can not find one for sale without asking for a quote from the obsolete part vendors. Is there an available substitution part number for this chip? Thank you Richard Hall WB4RSO |
Hi Richard HP part number 1820-2933 is a Plessey Semiconductors SP8606B. This is a 1.3GHz divide by two ECL Logic device. Plessey Semiconductors were manufactured in Swindon UK. Looks like your A6 Board was manufactured and designed at the HP plant in Scotland. Now probably hard to come by. Hi Again There is a seller in Switzerland with three available, but sit down first, they will cost about $60 each plus shipping. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAnd modern ECL divider is probably a good substitute, except it will need an adapter of some sort for the pin out. At those frequencies, the 100K and higher families will be fine. DigiKey sells a bunch of chips that could be a replacement (other than the pinout). Cheers, Kuba 16 apr. 2020 kl. 9:44 em skrev george edmonds via groups.io <G6HIG@...>:

George,
Thank you for your reply. After a total of 6 hours searching I just found a seller on the auction site listing Plessey Prescaler/Frequency divider IC's. In the description he listed theSP6806B. He stated that the IC's were NOS from Watkins-Johnson and he is located in Morehead Kentucky, United states. The price is $9.50 each IC. I ordered 2 and will replace the bad one in about 2 weeks. This may be the last problem for the 8656A. I will then move on to the stack of more than 50 pieces of test equipment. That is not counting about 30 Tektronix 7000 plugins. Richard? WB4RSO |
Morehead, KY? Bet I know who that is. He will pipe up soon I think..

Joking apart, there seems to have been a minor dump of similar Plessey
Semi' parts on a certain web auction site recently.?? I was looking at a similar part number, but a divide by 10/11 chip last night.? More out of curiosity than anything else. It's always worth putting the OEM part number into Google, and see what falls out.? You may get a pleasant surprise, sometimes...? Even try the HP assembly number, seems people are always scrapping HP stuff somewhere and "parting out" the assemblies. 73.
