HP 16500A Problems

Hello All,

Just got one of these at a local auction, 2 problems.........

Firstly:? when plugged in it blew the breaker on the mains and blew the
fuse......? So? looks? like there might be a problem with the PSU. Any
pointers? to? where? there? are? any known problems. Not even taken it
apart yet but videos show it to be a somewhat involved bit of kit.

Second? problem:? There? is? a? floppy? in the rear drive, none in the
front.? Unfortunately the disk from the rear drive had CORRUPT written
across? it. I have some files downloaded from the internet but the app
LIFUTIL? wont? run? on? anything? other? than? a DOS or Win95 machine,
neither of which I have access. I plan to run the machine using a CF card and
a? CF? to? IDE interface but how to get the required files onto the CF
card?

Any pointers I'd be grateful.

Hello,

LIFutil is not needed. AFAIK, all you need to do is FAT format and dump the files on it. At least I do this for my 16500B

The 16500A does not have a disk drive just the front and back diskette drives.? I have a spare power supply taken from a working 16500A.? I could also provide the parts to upgrade to a 16500C including a loaded disk for a reasonable fee.? I am located in eastern Canada.

If the 16500A power supply is dead an upgrade to a 16500C would
replace everything except for the internal chassis frame, top, bottom,
and side skin panels, the CRT, and the CPU board/power supply/module
backplane. You can't just swap the CPU boards.

In addition to replacing the 16500A CPU board with a 16500C CPU board,
you also need to replace the front and rear panels, the front floppy
drive and mounting bracket, the side fan/hard drive mounting bracket,
and all of the internal ribbon cables.

If you factor in the time it takes to strip all of the necessary parts
out of a donor 16500C and then strip the parts out of the recipient
16500A and reassemble it with the 16500C transplant parts you would
almost be better off paying the extra cost of shipping the entire
16500C. An exception might be when the shipping cost is crazy
expensive. A few years ago I stripped the necessary upgrade parts out
of a 16500C to ship to Alexandre in Brazil to upgrade a 16500A because
in that case the shipping cost was crazy expensive.

The 16500A or 16500B upgrade to 16500C kit was the E2497A. Here are
the instructions for doing the A->C or B->C upgrade:
/g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment/files/16xx%2016xxx%20Logic%20Analyzers%20Accesories//E2497A-16500-Upgrade.pdf

I have a complete working 16500A as spare. After buying it for the cards, I bought a 16501A to attach to my 16500C and moved them from the 16500A to the 16500C/16501A.

I want to keep the chassis for a personal project. But I already have a spare PSU for my 16500C, so the remaining parts of the 16500A are excess. I think that's a PSU, CRT display and logic board. I can take photos of it running before pulling the parts out.

Please contact me off list if interested.

Have Fun!
Reg

I am aware of that upgrade instruction from HP and I have a copy in my 16500C directory.? I would happily ship the whole thing if someone wanted to pay for shipping.

The C I have? I bought to replace my A largely because? of the PS/2 keyboard and mouse and ethernet, but as it turned out I barely used it as shortly after I got it, I got a really good deal on 2 non-working 16700A full of blades and made 1 working one out of the two.? The 16700A is now sitting in a box as well as I replaced it with a 16700B for the extra memory.? I also ended up with extra blades a few 16550? cards, 2-16522A, 1-16520A/16521A pattern generators and a 2 card scope 16530A/16531A that only works in? 16500 systems.? All of which are available if anyone is interested? I have cables for most of the LA cards and for all of the? pattern generators but I don't have any pods.

Hello,

Thanks for the replies and the offers. I'm not looking to upgrade this thing, I just wanted to get it working. Found a few problems with the power supply so I'll fix those first and see what happens.

Hello All,

Anyone know anything about the power supply made by the OECO Corporation 080-20521-01 that is used in the 16500A

I seem to have cured the initial fuse and mains trip blowing by changing out a couple of cracked capacitors and the mains filter on the input. The PSU now fires up, but the 'OVER CURRENT' led is flashing and while there are voltages on the output pins none of them are where they should be. ?There is about 70 volts on the 120 volt output. No signs of anything in distress on the board. While I've had a look I can't find too much information on the Internet, so any pointers would help.

Thanks.
