53181A 3 GHz prescaler from China

Hello All,

I am thinking about getting a 3 GHz prescaler board for the HP 53181A from China.? They are only about $40US.? How well do they work?

I haven¡¯t bought any of them so I cant attest to how well they work but $40 aint all that much money to give it a try

I bought one a while back for my 53132A. I haven't done much testing of it, but it seems to work just fine.?

Many years ago I remade/copied the original Agilent card.
It works fine.
I think the Chinese did the same thing industrially.

Thanks for the input.? I ordered one from China.? I will see what happens.?? As Lothar said, it is worth $40 to take a chance.? I am sure they were all built off the same plans available on Github so it should work.

Same thing for me, the option 3GHz (from China) works fine with my 53132A.

I¡¯ve done sensitivity test when I bought it, and it was OK.

I¡¯ve upgraded my 53181 with an eBay prescaler and oven timebase. I believe I got them from a fellow in Poland. No problems at all. For the timebase I calibrated it to a rubidium standard as described in the manual.?

Mine also came from the guy in Poland : he is on eevblog. It works well and avoids the problem with self-oscillation in some prescalers (due to being a clone of the HP design ).

Now what I want is a clone of the external clocking interface for the HP33120A. It's rather complex due to creating an internal 40MHz reference.

I saw a clock multiplier module on eBay the item number is 362887003547
- P1: Input Port (Input 2~50MHz, Minimum Input Voltage 100mVp-p) SMA Interface.
- P2: Output Port (Maximum 150MHz) SMA Interface
- P3: Power Supply Port (3.3V~5V)
Configurable for 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, and some others
Might be useful for getting 40 MHz from 10 MHz for your applcation.
I was thinking to try this to get 40MHz from 10MHz ref for ADI Pluto SDR module. I purchased one but have not tried it yet.
I have no connection to the seller.

Has anyone measured the additional phase noise from this clock multiplier module, or others?

Thanks, Ron

I received the 3GHz prescaler board from China.? It arrived quicker than I expected.?? I installed it in my 53181A but it does not count above 1.69999 GHz.? I think this is a limitation of the counter, not the prescaler.? The board looks well made and works fine.

Aside from that, I had to find the correct spacers to mount the board. The kit came with 2 but they were just the right length to interfere with the interface connector.? I put in longer spacers and that solved that problem.? The other minor issue was that the kit came with an SMA to SMA cable.?? It should be an SMA to BNC so it will mount correctly in the front panel.? Fortunately, I had an SMA to BNC cable available.

I have also bought an prescaler from china-12 Ghz-works great.
But the guy mention that one should be carefull about the counter(mine 53132A)--some are only 1.5Ghz versions and other 3Ghz!--will try to dig out the info.

Hello Hardy,

Thank you for? the information.? I have a 53181A, which is the 1.5GHz counter.? There is another digit in the counter that never lights up.? That was probably used in the 12GHz model.

I wonder if it can be converted to the 3GHz model by changing the firmware?
