8757(E) frequency annotation

Hello all, just received my 8757E to replace my faithfull 8756. All seems to work ok but for the frequency annotation from the 8350B sweeper through the HP-IB. What I found out is that I can manually supply a frequency start and stop label but when moving the cursor around I does show the level but not the frequency. Maybe I overlook a hidden setting somewhere?

Found it, it works oke

Hi pa0jme1952,

Good you got it working.
When you are ready for it, I recommend upgrading your 8757E to a C.
You will get colors, and more data points.

Search the group history for upgrade instructions.

Regards,
Askild

Thanks for the info I will look into it

There are 3 things that differentiate the E from a C.

1. Firmware.? You would need to replace the socketed EPROMs with the C version.
2. Existence of the rear panel video output board...which does not exist in the E version.? While you do not need this board, one of the pins that connects to the main video board (GSP) is grounded on that rear panel board and the firmware checks for this sense line to be low, so you can just short this line to ground.
3. One bit located in one address space in EEPROM.? The value must be programed properly which can be easily done via the front panel.

I don't remember the exact details.? I may have posted this information previously on this forum....I still have all the details somewhere.

Others may have posted other ways around this, but this is how HP intended it to work.

Hello Rien (PA0JME),

How great that you are now using an 8757E, a nice step up from the 8756 and you will experience it as a great instrument.
I would advise you to at least check the memory backup battery on the uP board. If it leaks, it can cause damage to the PCB.
The battery can be replaced without any problems as it mainly powers the RAM memory for holding the SAVE/RECALL measurement configurations during power-off.

If at any time you would like to upgrade your 8757E to a "C" version to gain access to the extra options and the color screen, you can find the Firmware and description in the 8757 folder under the "Files" section. The description in "HP8757E_C-upgrade.pdf" explains the upgrade.

If you have any questions or if I can assist you with programming the EPROMs, you can send me a PM.

Kind regards, Guido PE1MHY

Thanks Guido, I have the eproms ordered and already programmed the ones for the 8757. I expect the 2764's to arrive next monday (23) and lucky me I did not throw away my old laptop with printerport for use with my faithfull willem programmer. I did not check the battery yet but acc to the circuitdiagram there's no trickery involved as with the dual set in the 8756. You always need to take care as with the older ICOM's which had their FW stored in RAM, so dead battery = dead transceiver hi
I don't think we ever had a contact on 70cms or higher, currently rebuilding stuff for 6, 3 cm's and 24GHz

Mvg Rien

Hello Caesar, I found it in your uploaded doc : 8757C_GSP bd.pdf
